    Best 3D Printer Upgrades: 3d-printcreator.com/best-3d-p...
    Users with an Ender 3 V2 printer who purchased this printer at the end of 2020, or early 2021, and who are experiencing skipped steps in virtually every print, may experience an issue on the motherboard of the printer, which has wrong stepper drivers.
    Creality has shipped the Ender 3 V2 with the 4.2.2. motherboard, where the stepper drivers are soldered to the board, so they are not easy to replace. In the beginning, these were original Trinamic TMC 2208 silent stepper drivers (and the board is also available with 4988 stepper drivers), but later Creality started using a clone made in China that is much cheaper, but also much worse. These knock-off stepper drivers cause the problem of skipped steps, and this has nothing to do with incorrectly assembling the printer or not tightening the belts properly.
    Since the TMC 2208 stepper drivers are soldered to the board and are not easy to replace, the only solution to fix the problem is to replace the motherboard with the 4.2.7 version, which is sold as an upgrade by Creality.
    At the time of making this video, buyers who bought this printer with the wrong stepper drivers are not yet being compensated for this issue, and these users can only go to their reseller. In my case, the Dutch seller where my printer comes from was kind enough to give me the 4.2.7. motherboard for free to repair the printer, but I read on various forums that this is not the case everywhere in the world.
    I can confirm that after replacing the 4.2.2 motherboard to the 4.2.7 motherboard, all problems have been resolved.

    I have a 4.2.2, Initial prints with simple models are okay, but models with very slight overhangs and curves and small faces seemed very difficult to work with, and I always had to restart the print because first few layers are not printing well, I had to adjust the bed while it was printing.
    I changed the firmware to a custom one (mriscoc), and now it has great print quality!

    Purely by accident I found your video and have basically watched as many online videos as possible. I have had this machine for 5 days have tried everything but not achieved any prints whatsoever. Tonight I was reaching for the on off switch as I had become totally fed up and accidentally touched a stepper motor. But I immediately felt that is was really scalding hot !!! So I now think I have the reason for my failed prints … incidentally I have replaced the Bowden tube with Capricorn have cleaned out the head, replaced the nozzle, installed a cr touch and probably done in excess of 100 tests which have all failed. Now I have some hope after seeing this video and yes my board is 4.2.2 written down when installing the CR touch. I will write to Creality in the morning and express my frustration and disappointment. Thank you 🙏🏼

      I hope you will receive a satisfying answer from Creality, but to be honest, I don't expect that to happen. From most people I speak, I hear that Creality doesn't do anything about it, and the only thing people can do is buy the new motherboard themselves.
      This is mainly the reason I don't do Creality reviews anymore. They went from a very good brand that changed the industry, to a very bad brand, that doesn't do any quality control anymore.

      @@3dPrintCreator I have today tried more tests but am not going any further as I burnt my finger on the motor it was hot enough to cause a blister. It’s dangerous. If I don’t get any joy with Creality then I will let them know that I will go to trading standard as they are knowingly selling unsafe equipment

    • @3dPrintCreator
      @3dPrintCreator  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That hot stepper motor is something that concerns me. With the motherboard problem this was not an issue. It looks like the current that is set with the screw on the corresponding stepper driver is set to high. Please look up how to adjust stepper driver currents before you continue. It's not that difficult, but you do need a screwdriver that is not conductive, like a ceramic or plastic model. Also you will need a multimeter to take the readings from the stepper driver.

      @@3dPrintCreator after weeks of hopeless results the Machine would not play ball and unfortunately had to be returned to the seller. I think it will be a foregone conclusion that they will reassemble it and then inform me that there is nothing wrong. To be honest I would not expect them to say anything else. If that is the case I will request to see a video from the front as it is printing to see if my identification marks are visible thus ensuring it’s the printer I returned. As for Creality being responsive well you were right they didn’t really give a damn, however after I had written a very negative but fair report on social media they woke up and decided after all that they wanted to help. Just a pity they didn’t own the issue in the first place because they may have retained my buisiness incidentally as well as returning the Ender 3 VV2 I cancelled my order for 3 halot resin machines and two wash and cure units. It is a shame that these companies were not better equipped to be responsive to there purchasers. Thanks for all your advice and happy new year

    Hi Brian,
    Not relvant to the video but I bought a NEJE Master 2S Max 30W which will arrive soon. I just watched your comparison of Neje vs Ortur from 8 months ago where you're saying that the laser beam is thiner in the Ortur therefore can cut better and deeper.
    Do you have an update on that matter cause there has been some changes in the Neje machines design; now they run at 32 bits for example.

    • @3dPrintCreator
      @3dPrintCreator  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jo,
      Unfortunately, I don't have a newer version of the NeJe Master laser than the model I tested. The company behind NeJe was (to say the least) not happy with the fact that I had made a review in which I compared their laser (which I bought myself, and paid for) with a laser from Ortur, and for that reason did not want to work together for a test of new products. This while my videos that I made about the NeJe Maser have ensured that this machine has sold a lot. Of course Ortur wanted to work together, which is why I continued with Ortur.
      Also GearBest, with whom I work a lot, does not do business with NeJe, so it is not possible for me to order a NeJe machine for a review via Gearbest.
      Although I think their current machines are very good, and maybe even slightly better and more advanced than Ortur machines, I am not willing to put in my own money for another review. Not after how I was treated by NeJe after my comparison video came online.

    If its only one direction could be the belts. Most always cheaper stepper motors. Stay away from those red colored ones if possible. In CNCs there are issues of too much current in wires affecting other wires. You actually need to shield those wires with electrical covers.

    • @3dPrintCreator
      @3dPrintCreator  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I understand what you are saying, but as you can see, it's not only one direction.
      Also, as I stated in the video, the issue is solved and it had nothing to do with the stepper motors. It were the cheap stepperdriver clones the used on the 4.2.2 motherboeard that were to blame. after replacing the motherboard for a 4.2.7 version (with the good stepper trinamic stepperdrivers) the issue was gone.

    • @360_tours

      @@3dPrintCreator sorry meant to say stepper driver. For others, that have had a machine for a while and then it skips. Start with the belt then check the a4988 chips. I think sometimes they can get too hot. The cheap Chinese knock offs are not good (red ones). Either get new ones or call the company.

      There is nothing wrong with the 4.2.2 boards that have the correct stepper drivers. only if you happen to have the 4.2.2 boards that are assembled with the weak clone drivers, you will face the problems I had. Most batches were good, only the latest batches, where they cut down the assembly costs by using cheaper components, were affected.

    I THOUGHT I had this problem because of constant z-banding and layer shifting, but even after swapping to 4.2.7 it didn't improve (it actually got worse) turned out that it was a slicer issue, once I switched from Cura to Simplify3D my prints have improved greatly to the point where I'm not so sure this issue is all due to the clone stepper drivers.

    • @3dPrintCreator
      @3dPrintCreator  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Believe me, in my case, it was the motherboard. Same slicer settings on the new board worked perfectly.

    I had those sudden step skips since yesterday. E3V2 just mad a loud hardware crashing noise in the middle of a print every now and when. Then the printing just stopped in the middle of the print with an error-message like "Your print was interrupted...". I've got a 4.2.2 mainboard. But it turns out that: 1) Mainboard's fan had its connector losen out of the jack - so the board and drivers were not cooled anymore and the board did reset in the middle of a heavy print. 2) the stepper driver's bias voltage was very low on Y-axis (0.9V) and low on others (1.1V). I cranked all axes to 1.3V - now lets see how it goes. Might have been the same issue with your printer: all the vibrations might slightly changing the bias adjusting resistors or losen a fan cable. Another issue: the boards fan is only on if the heat bed is set to high temp, otherwise not. A TH-camr connected the main board fan to permanent 24V. Will report if this did fix the issue later.

    Nice Video.
    I also have a V2. I have bought it i think around september 2020. Did not have these problems. Until today. The first time i did try to print abs. Of starts well but even after the first layer it is shifting. I stopt after 5 layers. Checkt the printer and ran over again. Just the same. Never had the problem with pla or pteg. This is the first time i print with the bedtemperature on 100 degree celcius. Also i hear the steppermotors make a clicking noise ones in a while just like of you manualy unlock the steppermotors. When i let the printer print further on the second try it did stop and stand still in the middel of printing at layer 6 or so. One extra variabel is that before i started the print i upgraded the firmware to the latest (payed) marlin version.
    And i mounted a silent 12v fan some weeks ago were the mainboard is. Maybe it cant cool enough when running high temps. I did run it with that fan printing pla with no problem. I think my next step is to check the firmware and try an older version to look of the problem is going away.
    I have the 4.2.2 board and selected at the marlin firmware site the stock v2 version. Maybe i did take the wrong one?

      The normal stock firmware for the Ender 3 V2 is based on the 4.2.2 board, So I assume you have the correct firmware installed.
      If the problem repeats at a constant layer height, and the bad prints look the same, over and over again (with the same GCODE of course) then it is not the same problem I had with my printer.
      The problems I had, happened at random positions in the print, and were not repeatable, yet they happened in every 4 to 10 layers.
      When a problem like stepper skipping is the same for every run, then there is something going on in the GCODE that can't be processed by the printer, and then it repeats the same mistake over and over again. Please make sure what your printer does? If it's not the same problem I have, it could be an interpretation problem of the created GCODE.
      Oh, and groetjes from Lelystad. Very close to Dronten :-)

    my Tronxy XY-2 Pro came with TMC 2225 drivers which altough board integrated ( so not replaceable) have potentiometers so you can adjust Vref using a voltmeter. The only gripe I have with this arrangement is that Tronxy in their infinite wisdom chose not to put heatsinks on the drivers. Instead they placed a cheap 24v fan running constantly over them, which is lousy as hell. But it works and they don`t skip steps and print beautifully. For an almost 300 USD printer this should have come with better components, but it seems to me it is plagued with problems which mainly stems from Creality cheaping out on parts again. By the way, there are chinese manufacturers that use Trynamic german drivers. I happen to own one.

    • @3dPrintCreator
      @3dPrintCreator  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The problem with most (not all) Chinese manufacturers is that they make their boards with whatever components they can get on the cheap.
      In the beginning, Creality used German Trynamics in their 4.2.2 board, and then swapped them for cheaper Chinese clones later in the production process. Same thing happened at Artillery. Their first Sidewinder had German Trynamics, then version 2 and 3 used very cheap, very bad clones, where version 4 used better clones that didn't have any problems and I lost track, but now they are on version 7 or 8, and they are all called Artillery Sidewinder X1, while in fact, they are all different machines.
      This is the reason why sometimes I don't review a given machine, but a machine that I bought myself after a few months of production.

    Allot of info here.. I purchased one from Creality the Ender 3 v2 with the 4.2.2 board, with the CR-Touch sensor.. The 90 plus hours in trying to get that thing to home on the Z-axis, only to discover, they shipped out a unit with a bad Z axis motor cable/shorted on pin 1 to 2, that smoked the driver on the mother board, the cable on the CR-Touch sensor is bad on the crimp area of the plug board side, and the sensor itself, is bad, which smoked the board of my friends unit, the Z-axis limit stop switch is bad solder joints or rather, only one pin was soldered on the PCB, and the cable for that was bad/open... The power supply is supposed to steady a 24 volts, and with nothing connected to it, it fluctuates 18v to 30 volts then drops out for about 3 micro seconds on the scope..
    all of these parts I can see over time getting worn out, and needing to be replaced.. But brand new out of the box, and no ability to do anything with it but cuss up a storm as I trouble shot this junk... If the machine only cost $30 bucks, I wouldn't complain and just buy or build better components, but, shy of $400 straight from the manufacturer CREALITY's warehouse, it better work.... sadly, I ordered it in December about 2 weeks ago, and the 90 plus hours playing with firmwares and trouble shooting the Z-axis crap, only to realize, they are doing this on purpose and laughing all the way to the bank. I put is a claim with them 3 to 4 nights ago, and said I to expect an E-mail to figure that out... only to read a comment from another TH-camr that specializes in these and how it took 14 months from them to deal with any of it...
    CREALITY PRODUCTS ARE A POOR CHOICE. There is some out there that people have had wonderful luck with, but, strolling through so many videos, and the uncountable problems, is shocking. There is 1000's if not 10's of 1000's of upset people out there, that have defective units, by just reading the comments sections of the several hundred videos over the past two weeks and I am one with a defective unit. Well, now I know. The Asian mentality strikes again, all in efforts to flood the nation with as much junk as possible, as they really do not care of the damage they cause, in my opinion, I speculate it is being done on purpose, to harm other nations that contract the manufacturing and distribution of the junk they make or perhaps I should call it, an attack on the rest of the western world, LOL

      if the skipping happens at the same spot, and it's the same amount of movement every time you print, then it's not the same problem. look at your slicer settings, because that's most likely where the problem comes from.

    I got hit with this too, and another symptom is violent extruder clicking and printer shaking after a seemingly good print has been running for an hour or so. Apparently the cheaper steppers overheat in time, depending on your environmental conditions. If you have your printer in a cold room, you may not see it. But if you're in a warm area, it becomes obvious. You start a print, get a great first layer, everything seems fine. Then 1 hour later, click-click-click-click on the extruder, print goes to crap.

      Both, good cooling of the motherboard (preferably with a good cooling fan and heatsinks on the stepper drivers) and placing it outside of the enclosure will be good solutions for your problem.
      The stepper drivers on the 4.2.7 motherboard are more capable of handling more heat, therefore that motherboard will also be a solution for the problem (and give more possibilities to work with higher currents, therefore more speed).
      The 4.2.7 motherboard is very compatible with the Ender 3 V2 printer. You can switch the boards in only 5 minutes and use the firmware provided on the Creality website.

    • @3dPrintCreator
      @3dPrintCreator  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, to be honest I have a few ideas...
      The thing is, normally stepper motors skipping a step is normally a problem that comes from a bad connection, a non earthed stepper driver or motor, or the wrong voltages set on the drivers. Also thermal problems can be the reason for skipped steps. Most of the times the stepper driver get's to hot, and cooling the driver is the solution. This has to be done with a good cooler and cooling paste, on top of the driver, and preferably also with a fan that blows air over the cooler that is mounted on the driver.
      All the mentioned things can cause a stepper to skip steps, so you could see if any of the mentioned things solves your problem.

    Hi Brian! I bought for my nieces and nephews an Ender3 V2 mid-january on banggood in a flash deal. So far they don't have any problem like you described. It's not that systematic as you suggest with conviction. That's why Creality refused to replace printer motherboards. The problem is not replicable/reproducible even with newer boards. In a context of rising competition I doubt that Creality would take the risk of being less reliable than its competitors like Elegoo e.g. However Creality won't publish any possible flaws. The switch to a new version of controlboard can be regarded as a fix. But again, the issue does not occur systematically.

    • @3dPrintCreator

      the supplier in the Netherlands were I bought my printer had problems with all the printers in 2 batches they bought and even stopped selling them because creality refused to come with a solution. this shop, 123-3d.nl, is the largest 3d printer supplier in the Netherlands and believe me, their batches they buy are large quantity batches. they now have a fix on their website in the way of setting different vref voltages for the steppers and making changes in the settings of the slicer, but they do not recommend this printer to beginners anymore.
      Also, it's not only me who is complaining that there are so many different pcb's with the very same version number. There are multiple reviewers complaining about this, also because you need to be very careful when setting speeds in your slicer depending on the type of stepper drivers you have and the type of cooling they used to cool them.
      It's not only Creality, doing this. It's becoming a normal thing that it's impossible to compare 3d printers with the same name because under the hood, they are completely different.
