I was looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this episode. Porridge is definitely one of those shows that people love to say "couldn't be made today", but it was surprisingly progressive for its time, and dealt with some very real issues. Tony Osoba, who plays McClaren, was actually the first black Scottish actor on British television, and yes, he does appear more in the series!

I swear the characters in this show are still great. This show was the best. Even the less-than-PC language they use, never comes across as malicious so a lot of it slides for me and is taken in good humour. Ronnie Barker was one of the all time greats at comedic writing/acting. I'm glad you locked on to this and are enjoying it. There are so many wonderful characters still to be introduced, all with Fletcher at the heart of it.

What makes porridge great is that the characters are realistic even when they're black or gay. both Mcclaren and Lukewarm are still characters outside these labels and the rest of the mostly white, straight characters aren't seen as enemies to them. they're all in the same boat.
If this was made today there would be an entire episode about the prisoners accepting homosexuality and racial intersectionality.

4:25 this has got to be one of my favourite moments in porridge, Fletcher may not be a violent man but if he needs to resort to it he's able to show why you shouldn't start sh/t with him

And the fact that he doesn't just show who's in charge and that's it, he then shows him why he's doing the wrong thing and teach the young man a lesson.

Tony Osoba is such a good actor. This scene gives insight to the character of McClaren and British society at the time. One of my favourite episodes.
Exemplary writing from Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais.

What makes the series so superb is the humanity in Fletcher's character. It's that element that makes the show flow. Ronnie Barker here is at the top of his game. Even the director of the American show said his version wasn't in the same league as the original British version because of Ronnie Barker's performance....

Porridge is a British classic and very well worked plots that always works for Fletcher somehow. Timeless classic, even though some of the words are spicy for today, but wasn't in 1974+. Never ever seen a prison based comedy this good or better.

There is the original pilot from ronnie barker series seven of one. It featured 7 individual pilots. Two of which became series. One was Open All Hours. The other was "Prisoner and Escort" which was the episode that became Porridge. It will be worth a reaction as it is the first episode. Also there is a spin off film called "Porridge" and "Going Straight" where Flecther is out of prison.

As you say these days we don't bat an eyelid at kids born out of wedlock/mix-raced, the funny (but sad) thing is those who were labeled racists for showing pragmatic concern about such things back in the day have been somewhat vindicated as today we live in the very world they predicted where fatherlessness and racial ambiguity have indeed created a huge % of folks deeply scarred and hostile toward the ideas of identity or belonging

That's the mockumentary of a follow up to see what Fletch is doing now(2003). Appearances from some of the other cast. Mclaren is funny in it. As is Ives. Featuring "previously unseen footage and dramatic reconstructions" 😂 Narrated by Bill Nighy.

She is far from perfect, her most admirable Characteristic I thought, being her determination to carry on no matter what. The story is told from her perspective I believe. What is the likelihood that she would be spending her time worrying about the wellbeing of the slaves on her Dad's plantation? Considering that she is extremely self centred? Thinking about it, I believe her main concerns were with running her business and holding things together weren't they? And obsessing over her cousin Ashley.
