Now make some gloves to make it more accessible instead of depending on a camera in the real world. Gloves or the app can have a QR code that gets scanned to the device and uploads the users preferences (font, font size, background color, font color). That way people who use sign language can easily communicate in the outside world. Easier to purchase things and communicate without having a stranger record you to translate the sign language.
Gloves wouldn't work. As I told this to a Google research team about 5 years ago, sleeves are what would be needed to read the muscle activity be interpreting the Ulnar, Radial, Median nerve groups. An intermediary library to translate the activity to the particular signing language, and finally to the speaking language with possible real time translation. All this at the rate of speech (from 150 to 200 wpm). This would take allot of ML power and would be difficult to be portable.
it is a common misconception that signed languages only use the hands. they also rely heavily on the face and body. besides, we shouldn't assume that deaf people can read lips, or even written English for that matter, the latter thanks to our broken educational system. As a researcher in sign language machine translation, I can attest for cameras. They're a lot more convenient and accurate than gloves.
@@leekezar1344 The system I built a few years ago used to read the nerve impulses from the neck to the finger tip by wearing sleeves with EMG sensors to micro controllers that wirelessly connected to a mobile phone that converted those patterns into a modified intermediate SignWriting library and then to the specific sign language library being translated. This then to a language text and grammar library to allow active translation to another (possibly foreign) language unto the same mobile phone using Google translate app.
The sleeves were unobtrusive and allow a signer to travel and communicate with others without a camera getting in the way.

She says like once «American Sign Language» and then keeps on talking about Sign Language. They all talk about Sign Language recognition. Does this mean they are not working only on ASL but with most Sign Languages? I mean, all these videos are SOOOOO US centric. Some times they seem to want to be so «woke» but forget there is a world of almost 8000M people, not just their little bubble of under 350M
AI recognition technology for one language can be very easily switched over to another
I agree that there are many sign languages out there! We are just getting started with ASL due to our limited resources as a startup.
