The FRG-7 is my most used receiver. I have been utilising the record output jack to feed AF to a PC that decodes Digi modes. Works very well for SSTV, WeFax, RTTY, JT65, JT9, PSK modes etc. I replaced the old electrolytic caps (note: originals have no pressure relief indents on them!) Also replaced the dreaded green mylar caps as two of them had splits in their outer shells. With a little bit of time and effort these old classics are excellent bits of kit :-) Keep up the good work & enjoy Your 'Frog' 73 de 'Hairy Paul' Ayrshire, Scotland.

Nice radio. I changed the lamps over to LEDs on mine and I am quite happy with the result. Now I can run with the lights always on with no worries of burning out one of those old lamps.

This is the only radio I remember from my early days of being interested in amateur radio. After a gap I got my Foundation (UK) licence last year! I've read the warnings about buying old radios but would love to pick-up an FRG 7. I think it would suit my needs very well in addition to the nostalgia value.

Colin Locock I found one from local ”thrift store”. It buys and sells stuff. I love the tuning system in this radio.

I think if there was ever a receiver worth getting as a collectors piece, then this is it.

Recapping is pretty much a given on radios of this vintage isn't it?
Thumbs up for Radio Australia playing at the beginning of the clip...

Well I recapped it just so I didn't have any nasty surprises later
But none of the caps I replaced tested bad, SO time well spent .... maybe

You could call it preventative maintenance perhaps?

Mine had dried leaves on the I.f. board, the band and mode swithes had to be cleaned and it has since had the lamps replaced with leds. Mine does have the battery box. It worked well from the word go and is a great buy from a local garage sale for a real cheap price. Tip: connect a 150ohm resistor between the two red posts and you can use the SO239 for AM broadcast as well as shortwave.

"Tip: connect a 150ohm resistor between the two red posts" ... Just a piece of wire will do. It's simply a jumper after all.

The comb generator is the reference signal for the PLO (phase locked oscillator) main tuning. Same thing used on the Uniden/Tempo 2020 transceiver from around the same time frame. Not as complex as the newer microprocessor PLL systems now.
Enjoy that radio Steve, I'm stuck with a 'newer' Kenwood R-2000 with its own 'quirks'!

The FRG-7 is a great radio. It's my second favorite radio to use. The first is my Grundig Satellit 750.

Back to trouble shooting mine in a week or so, I've got the caps to put in, but I feel that front end FET is toast (Q101)
