Hey man what’s your approach when climbing dead lodgepoles? I’m fairly new to the climbing game and am always a little uncertain about how sketchy they can be when they have a big gnarl crack extending up em. Usually fine climbing those guys?
If it's dead and seasoned, hard as a rock, you're fine as long as it doesn't get spongey. Cracks in the outside cambium are fine, just cosmetic. But a large crack running down the heartwood shouldn't be ignored but just take your time and limit sudden movements as much as possible.
