Brennan holding Emily to the consequences of her chaotic choice is peak DM'ing. My favorite part of the Hilda Hilda scene is Brennan's in character "no, we're in this now". If Emily wants to do an out of left field scene she can but Brennan's gonna go toe to toe with her all the way.

It's one of our core skills, and we rely on it so much bc it signals that you're paying attention, AND that you're interested in understanding what the person in front of you really means. My DM was very lenient. He gave me a decanter of endless water. He allowed me to alter spells slightly. Such as wall of water. He allowed me to make it shorter, in height and length, to make it wider. And he also allowed me to use a homebrew sharkkin race. Which then me and my friend built around. Because the variant sharkkin I used had quadruple speed in water. So whenever combat would arise we would dual cast wall of water and make what we proudly called ... the Chum bucket.
You could guess what happened next.
When we knew a battle would take place in a certain area, we'd preemptively dig large pits and use the decanter and water spells to fill them, then conceal them. It was ... A grand time.

Sexy rat, Hilda Hilda, turning into her character's mom to try to get out of going to school... she's great at twisting the rules to her advantage (see: half the forest of the Nightmare King in sophomore year, all the times she used the "illusions/dreams are real here" thing to make revivify diamonds)

That's a dnd thing, though, when rolling death saves, rules as written say that natural 20's give you one hp, and brennan's plan was like "ok ally, you're stable, and if you want to roll more you won't be stable anymore, it'll restart the death saves"
The "nat 20 = two successes" is a houserule.
Brennan just didn't expect ally to crit at a pivotal moment, because it was campaign 1 and he had no idea he was playing with an irl destiny sorcerer

The best part is while Emily is a Chaotic force of nature, she does it in a way that encourages others to be chaotic and fun, without getting in the way of narrative or stealing spotlight from others.

    • @hfar_in_the_sky

Indeed. One of the things I noticed when she played with the Critical Role crew was that she was still chaotic, but not nearly as chaotic as she was in, say, _Fantasy High_ or _A Crown of Candy._ And honestly the level of chaos she brought felt natural to the Crit Role setting, whereas is she brought the same level she did as other Dimension 20 games, it'd feel tonally out of place. Which to me says that where her talent actually lies is in being able to read just how much chaos is appropriate for a given setting and adjusting it. Gal's good at reading a group

To be honest, I used to dm with a two sided chalk board, and let me tell you. It is so fun to start marking the symbols of the fight and see your party's increasingly worried looks as the chalk sounds don't stop, especially when finished by a long noise indicating that one of the ennemies is enormous (my dm battle encounter style is "the horde", so it happened very frequently).
Also, the chalk board is just a fun thing in general, because you can erase in a dramatic fashion and a ton of other shenanigans.

Emily's level of roleplay in DnD is something I strive for. Like, holy shit does she just put absolutely EVERYTHING into bringing her characters to life and that is fuckin awesome. Especially Sundry Sidney in Starstruck Odyssey. Absolutely fantastic. I kinda have a difficult time bringing my characters to that level, as usually, I either go down the Warforged route with a personality like HK-47 from KOTOR, or I play a simple-minded brute with a good heart just trying to find his way in the world.

My first 'dnd' (gurps because that's what my dad preferred) character my dad helped me build, he told me to tell him 3 spells I wanted to do, not limiting me to a spell in a book.
I can't remember the 3rd I chose, but I wanted to spit rocks at people, and I wanted to be able to make a force field.
The prerequisite spells for the first thing alone accidentally made me rather strong, as I had to be able to make earth, shape it, I had to have the ability to levitate the bullets, etc.
    I was 10.
My first actual dnd character I made I wanted to be able to have exploding fireballs, which again came with many many prerequisites.
Gurps stands for general universal role playing system. You can take any character, from dnd, wow, what every system and turn it into a gurps character. But you can not take a gurps character and turn it into a dnd character
