Imagine, in Ireland, there was only one television channel at that time, even though we got our second channel (RTE 2) in November of that year.

If it wasn't for Phillips, more people would have being able to buy or rent a video recorder. When Betamax and VHS came to Europe, around 1978, they were selling them cheaper than Phillips N1700 (and V2000 later) machines. This made Phillips worry as they wanted the full VCR market in Western Europe to be Phillips machines. They persuaded the European Parliament to put a tariff or a tax on all video recorders and video tapes from Japan, hence why they were expensive to buy. The tapes were £10-£20 a piece. Even renting a machine was expensive. One place in Ireland charged IR £25 a month (IR £5 a week) in 1980, so even renting one was not cheap, but certainly cheaper than buying one (In 1981, a video recorder (VHS) in Ireland cost IR £650, when most people were getting an average of £100 a week in wages). 1982 saw the start of VCR's becoming cheaper and by 1984, there were second hand rental machines for sale under the £200 mark.

Thames later used to end with night thoughts which lwt used to show too. It carried on until I think 1987 when they started to go 24 hours instead.

I never knew Dave Allen was on ITV.

After a successful stint on Australian TV in the mid 60s , Lew Grade signed him up for 1966 to 69 for his Saturday evening light entertainment on ITV (made by ATV). However Bill Cotton signed Dave for his legendary & long running ' Dave Allen at Large starting in 1969 on BBC 2 then soon after on to BBC1 until around 1986 when he retired ( as it happened , in 1989 he" came out of retirement to live a life that he'd been accustomed to ; a sort of Irish retirement")! In the 70s he still did occasional work for ITV ; particularly documentaries for ATV which that might be the one in that Thames listing. In 1968 he did a special for Thames ( in black and white, ) Which was called " Inside the Mind of Dave Allen . Them in 1980 he did a program for LWT in which he played the part of a stressed out Double Glazing sales man & hasn't been shown since!

@@mikemartin2957 Actually, I remember the 1980 LWT Dave Allen play.
It was one of a series of Alan Bennett written plays which were darkly comic in character.
I seem to remember that Dave Allen played an estate agent or some such in the midst of a nervous breakdown.
I also seem to recall the dark pathos of the series invoked quite a bit of viewer disapproval.

      1977 I believe.
Interesting use of closing music, with what sounds a library instrumental of the James Bond film from the previous year.
