  • Hi, this is a 'How To' video on the differences between the RJ series of plug connectors as known in the United Kingdom. It explains the common name and the official name of each plug so you can easily identify each connector which should help if you need to repair, make or purchase a new lead.

    Thanks ...
    Informative video ...
    One other note of confusion though is that in addition to the "RJ-9" in the States being synonymous with the "RJ-10" in the UK.
    The 6P6C "RJ-25" in the States is the same as the "RJ-12" in the UK.

    • @H.T.2forever
      @H.T.2forever 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      And I guess the 6P4C "RJ-14" in the States has no RJ- number counterpart in the UK other than as the 6P4C variety of the "RJ-11?"

    A 6P4C is an RJ14. It's NOT another RJ11 (which is only a 6P2C). The RJ14 are used for two-line PSTN telephones, adding two wires (yellow and black) on each side of the center two (red and green) for the second line. Has primarily very small business and residential application. The narrower "handset" plug and matching jack are an RJ22 or RJH; both designations are used for it. They were created to idiot-proof handsets and their cords to prevent them from being plugged into the wrong jack on the instrument, or into a PSTN FXS jack, albeit it doesn't stop some complete idiots from attempting to force it to fit anyway. The 6P6C RJ12 and RJ25 are commonly used in commercial and industrial applications for PSTN phone systems. The difference between them is their specific application, with the RJ25 the most common for carrying three PSTN lines with pins 1 and 6 carrying the third line.

    Just discovered, to my cost, there is an RJ12 with offset clip (on ebay RJ12 DEC Modular Connector Plugs with offset tab Latch) ..these are 6 pins In my BT Converse 1300 they have only two pins (RH viewed from above) and are used for DC power .

    I've been scouring the internet for answers and this is the best info I've found. I've now identified my AT&T DSL's modem's(gateway 4111N) "Broadband" jack to accept 6P4C RJ-11 connectors. However, the connector, which we have not replaced since installation almost a decade ago, has 2 grooves on the top side in front of the release latch that allows it to snap into my modems(which we have changed over the years). I'm looking to replace my CAT5e line that runs from our NID outside the house(it goes in through a window and straight into the modem) but without the right connector on the other end it would be useless. Any clue as to what kind of plug it is? I've searched on the internet for a week now with no relevant results, just talk of RJ-11s being used for phones.
    TL;DR : My router will only accept 6P4C connectors with 2 special grooves on top, any idea what type of plug it is?

    Thanks for the explanation. Is a 6P/6C cable downward compatible with a 6P/4C or 6P/2C connector?

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      cachememory Hi, if you were using a 2 core cable then yes you can use a 6P/2C, 6P/4C or a 6P/6C but if you were using a 4 core cable then you can use a 6P/4C or 6P/6C and if you are using a 6 core cable then you can only use a 6P/6C. There is no speed differences between the plugs, the only difference is the amount of gold contacts present. I hope this answers your question.Many thanks Vince

      @cachememory 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your detailed answer. Though this raises another question: How do I recognize the number of cores of the cable? Should that be given in the technical specifications if present?

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      cachememory Yes, it will often mention the cores of the cable in the spec or if you already have the cable you can normally see the cores through the clear RJ11/RJ45 plugs. Also if you are using the flat profile cable which is very common on various leads then the width of the cable will be different between 4 core, 6 core and 8 core.

    thanx so much, the issue im trying to sort is my mums slow internet , our isp are talktalk and plusnet who i have just moved to they sent with our routers 2 p 6 c (only 2 gold pins) to go from phone socket(with filter) to router when i plug in a 6p6c( 6 gold pins it did speed up her internet but then i worried it could cause fire as the filter that come with it only has 2 gold prongs inside, so for safety just replaced the 2 pin one for new then i check my cable which i swapped for a longer one to discover it has 4 gold bits and my internet is faster than hers and it not caused any probs for me the last few years lol......was i worried for nothing, i want to put the faster one back for her????

    what is the difference between a RJ9 and RJ10 and RJ22 4P4C?
    I am trying to create a ict220 cable for Point of Sales devices however the internet sources indicate that there is an RJ11 at one end and a RJ45 on the other. I believe that is this incorrect since I have a cable where one end is RJ45 but the other one is smaller than a phone Jack I can only assume that it is a RJ9 or RJ10 or RJ22 spending time in Trial and error is not an option since I don't have the jacks available. Can you please shed some light on what the smallest jack size is? thanks

      Xcalibur Prime Hi, for ADSL between the wall socket and the ADSL Modem Router you would need either a RJ11 (6p4c) or RJ12 (6p6c), both will perform exactly the same.Thanks Vince

    Your RJ10 seems to be RJ9.
    RJ9 is 7.6 mm large
    RJ10 is 9.6 mm large
    Everything else is the same.
