- Twelve O'Clock High is an American drama series set in World War II. This TV series originally broadcast on ABC-TV for two-and-one-half TV seasons from September 18, 1964, through January 13, 1967; was based on the motion picture Twelve O'Clock High (1949).
I am on my fourth time through the series. Even if I know the script, I never get tired of Lansing's acting. Every time through you discover more nuances and intricacies of his great acting skills.
They don't have actors like Robert Lansing anymore. He was very convincing as Gen. Savage.
Robert Lansing did a great job acting in this TV Series. His voice - his eyes - his presence - all were outstanding!
You got that right.
He did a great job portraying a no nonsense general.
To be honest in my view, he should have starred in the movie version also
@@GeeBee909
The movie was made in 1949 so he was too young.
What an excellent episode!
That look on Savages face when he finds out the new klutz is his bombardier was priceless lol.
He noted that he wasn't much different went an older officer took him under his wing. He essentially saw his younger self. "Gangling clown" or something similar, if I remember back.
One of my favorite episodes and it does a great job of showing the seasoned, intelligent, cunning warrior seeing himself in a much younger man. The sentiment turns to sorrow when Lathrop suffers his first loss and feels the pain of his own actions. Savage tells him, they're not much different and that people like them must bear the burden of ending war so that children will not have to grow up with the horrors terrible times.
I like the sensitivity with which the scene of their last meeting was filmed. Mary's happiness and joy, Andy's "you'd be as welcome as the flowers of spring" to Mary's father, and the way each looks lingeringly at the other, suggesting they know it will be the last time they see each other alive. Watching it just now, that 60 year old devastating memory of this loveliest young woman being snatched away after she just agreed to marry him involuntarily returned--quite a surprise. And one more thing--it looked like BOTH actors enjoyed that kiss--after all, even actors playing a part are human. And each was SO attractive at the time!
I watched this as a Kid, grateful to Man who put them on TH-cam
Agreed my friend..63yrs how bout you?
It's easy to overlook Peter Fonda's acting chops because he's never flashy , always Low key. He conveys more with his eyes, facial expressions and body language than most actors do with tons of dialogue.
Bless them all
Best episode ever!!! The cost of war conveyed in a love story that is never finished.
A good episode. Watching and enjoying from European Union, Lithuania.
The WAY Savage looked at Andy before the intro was a " if looks could KILL" moment !!🙄🤦…😂😂😂👍
Great show, sorry it was stopped, always
Wow! So far this series has been extremely powerful. I may have watched it as a kid but most of this stuff would have gone right over my head.
What a turn of events, and how a funny looking guy was so serious about life! Peter Fonda won my heart, really.
Sad and funny and inspirational. Excellent acting, great story also gives us a peek into a different side of Gen'l savage.
Love these series…
Basically a good show for the time. I was in second grade while enjoying it at home after school each day.
Same here, being in grade school and liking to watch it then; but I can really enjoy it now!
TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH was a good show for any time.
The maturation of authority does not come from rank alone. Through the experience, hard earned, I might add . . . of many hard earned moments, such as this . . . brings real authority behind one's actions, both alone and within society, at large. And with that, brings confidence. Call it a win-win . . . . . . 🇺🇸
I love Savage's reactions to Andy, especially when he hears him playing the harmonica in the plane.
Robert Lansing played quite a roll in this series.
Peter Fonda was impressive.
role..
TY for these.
I was a month short of turning 13 when this episode aired, and just like Peter Fonda, I fell in love with the lovely Jill Haworth. A British girl with flaxen hair and soulful eyes, slender and short, she's the type that still smites me to this day at age 72. When her character was killed, I cried because I didn't expect it. This story haunted me for months and months after, in its own way, this never ended. When my wife of 15 years divorced me suddenly at age 45, my personal challenge to recover began. For 27 years I have been looking for Ms. Haworth (who passed away too young in real life also) and my ex (who fell in love with another man 4 years post divorce), with no luck. Maybe now, as I realize a haunting story or a regretted reality cannot be resurrected, I can meet a new woman, special in own ways and not dependent on matching that type, and make a better ending this time. Be happy Joyce, and Rest in Peace, Jill! My love was real and I have more to give that woman I haven't met yet! Much sadder, is that this war did not end war. How many millions have died since WWII? How many more are in real danger today? Far more important than my personal dream. . . .
Let God lead. He will bring you to the one best for you. I was not able to marry until I was 50. That was 20 years ago. For what we have, we are happy. Let Him guide you. He wants the best for you.
@@jonnyq680 Thank you. That is my Faith as well. Though it truly put God to the test to find a woman anything like Jill for me now! 😄
Writer Edward Lakso had many hit shows to his credit including Combat!",Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, Charlie's Angels, ' The Rockford Files, "Name of the Game",'Starsky and Hutch, Airwolf, The Fall Guy, and Hawaii Five-O.
Always the hard nose, it was nice to see Savage showing some heart.
Savage saw himself . . . when he was a lieutenant ! 🇺🇸
Yep - I always figured he couldn't be as heartless as he appears to be in most episodes!
His irascible demeanor, mostly from his burden of command, frustration over logistical problems from fighting for parts, planes, personal, and even good weather, often hid it.
Every commander has to steel himself and guard his heart, lest it break when he loses men.
First time I saw London was on a day trip from RAF Lakenheth. Only 70 miles away. Didn't get to any pubs. I was too busy checking out the history and food. You could tell where you was by the smell of the street vendors. That was some excellent food!
This episode with Peter Fonda was excellent.
I was thirteen when I saw my first episode of '12 o'clock High. Not long afterward I figured I was born to late. I wanted to be a B-47 pilot in WWII. thanks for the great upload.
Sorry you couldn't have flown a B-47 until after WWII in 1951. LR
You mean in present day! That guy is right. Most of the jet bombers were in the Luftwaffe during WWII!
That would be P-47. B-47 was a jet powered post war bomber.
Maybe you were...
When TV was entertaining ...
Jill Haworth R. I. P.
Okayy, that's it. I'm officially, irretrievably in love with Lansing's Savage. 😭❤
ABC thought different and fired Lansing abruptly after the episode "The Hero", along with several other key actors. 👇👇👇
Michelle, I’m a man 67 but I think I understand. I watched this when I was 8 yrs old. I admired “Gen Savage” greatly along with “Lucas McCain” The Rifleman and Vic Morrow’s character on Combat. I was in the Army 20 years. The morals and fortitude of these characters had a great effect on me and reinforced the things I knew to be right. Shows like this and the writers that created these stories are priceless and part of a perfect storm we’ll surely never see again. Keep looking up!
The series wasn’t worth watching after Lansing was axed.
@@garyfrancis6193
Totally agree, the series was never the same without Lansing.
@@alangalloway8700 Well said, Alan. I agree. The show and the period it depicts illustrated a time in America and the world when we had clarity about moral ideals like freedom, patriotism, heroism, and democracy - things worth fighting for. I'm 71 and miss those days.
excellent episode
"You've got to be two different human beings," one the combatant, the other the person.
As one gains ground and grows, the other loses ground and recedes.
Hopefully enough of the person remains when peace comes and is not a casualty of war.
At the Academy we had a few cadets like this man. Some of them became fine officers, if they were humble and took their craft seriously.
I would rather walk into a bar and see s pretty girl like Mary, than some chic with tattoos and nose rings. Jill Haworth was really attractive.
Suit yourself.
I thought she was "I Dream of Genie"
@@timothyjordan5731 Nope - Genie was Barbara Eden!!
@@jameshughes455 Correct but there seemed quite a resemblance. I had to wait for the credits to be sure.
@@timothyjordan5731 Yep - they do resemble each other quite a lot!
One of the best episodes, but totally wrong ending. Andy would be forever changed, he would never be an awe shucking goofy kid again. Andy now understood that his job in this war was to bring it to an end as fast as he could by being as deadly and accurate at his bomb sight as he could be. A much better ending would have been Andy telling General Savage, “Let’s go to work General”.
That`ll work.
It worked fine. He was changed, he didn't merely go back to being a clown, he was still a klutz, just one with a purpose other than what he initially thought was "his job" so he could go back and have a family and a farm.
His stumble was to brighten a tragic ending ever so slightly, and show that while he learned a painful lesson no one should have to, he still was "trying to find his way," in spite of making mistakes, faltering, and stumbling, like any good fallible, honest man.
You’re totally wrong.
I remember the color season better because of my age. I was three or four. But I will always remember 12 O'CLOCK HIGH coming over the tv speaker.
One Of Quinn Martin’s successful shows. Should’ve been a longer series (1964-1967) ABC Network
tony johnson It's Quinn Martin's fault that it didn't last longer.
A DFC AND a promotion?
JACKPOT!
Cha chinggggggggggggggggg!!!!!!!
a young peter fonda before his easy rider days , wow !!!!!
Never cared for the fondas...especially his sister!
Me too mister. Their dad was OK. Fought in the pacific in the navy.
Peter Fonda was the best in this episode.
I Didn't Know Until This Very Minute [2024] That "The L.T." Was A Very,Very Young Peter Fonda. Besides Westerns, The Next WW2 Movies I Remember Were (Navy) "In Harms Way" & "Mr.Roberts" [Lt.JG USN] At 0dds With Capt James Cagney With That Same "Country Accent" L😄L [I Was 11]. Then Most Recently "MIDWAY." Unfortunately His Daughter "Jane vs.VietNam" Was Just A Few Short Protest Years Up The Road. 0h Well, You Can't Really Pick Your Relatives. In My Opinion, Peter Fonda Was A Great Dignified American Actor🫡
Yes, Fonda is impressive in this. Beau Bridges
showed his acting chops on another episode.
Henry Fonda, Peter Fonda's father, served in the Navy in WWII.
My father, LT Bill Grover, USN, attended Naval Intelligence Officer School with Henry Fonda
Robert Lansing was brilliant in this role.
We recently lost Peter Fonda.
That;s a perfect Robert Walker role! Anyone else notice the similarity between Fonda and Walker?
yep
A lot of nice comments posted about this episode.
Robert Lansing was the series.....
There is no way the TikTok generation could sit quiet and listen to the great speech the General gave after the bombing.
I have always loved the acting of Peter Fonda.
Yea, he was a right pleasant feller..
A very mature episode, very poignant. 😢
In 1969, Peter Fonda would star in Easy Rider. In 1964, he was a guest star. And Vietnam was heating up.
Tv shows from the 50’s 60’s pushed Cigarettes
This series made a BIG mistake replacing Robert Lansing, hugh, he WAS Frank Savage. This was his role
I much prefer THIS Peter Fonda than the hippie from ‘Easy Rider’.....Daddy would have been proud...
Jill Hayworth from “In Harms Way” as Ensign Annalee Dorne, Nurse Corps UNSR.
I wince every time Lansing lights up. They ultimately killed him.
Along with Frank Overton in 67 and John Larkin in 1965
Was interested in which Tactics manual Lathrop was reading, but the War Dept TM xxxx number was out of focus. Things are mighty different now in the 2020s, but still, the manual might be worthwhile today.
Just ask Sun Tzu
37:50 When the general and the MP pull up near Lathrop's stolen jeep:
MP: "We found it about a half hour ago, sir."
(General looks at the bombed-out pub.)
General: "Lathrop better be dead in there, because if he isn't, I'm gonna KILL him!"
Can you find the Star Trek opening theme in the musical line? Maybe it was repeated earlier but I heard it near the end. Your Treasure Hunt now!
Now it all makes sense, why after the war Lt. Lathrop rebelled, grew his hair out, bought a chopper, and became Captain America!
Such a Good Show, I was a little Young to see when it came out. You can see those planes were not in any way bulletproof, No Armor or anything, You could just get shot in Your Seat! Must have been quite a thing, I had a great Uncle I knew As a kid who was a WW2 Bomber Pilot but He died when I was a Kid. There was a picture of Him with his crew years ago but it had been lost somewhere!
BETTERWORLD SGT0589 I thank your Great Uncle for his service.
B-17's were not well armored but. Heavily armed with .50 cal BMG's
Knew a B-17 pilot years ago. He said he (sat on) his M1911 pistol while flying a mission...
Fonda went through that first scene like he went through life -- a complete disaster. Except he didn't redeem himself.
Love the psychological warfare he used Andy setting in the bombed out bar with the little girl; and the general won the cupid doll.
That`s KEWPIE doll....
OMG !!! Peter Fonda ...Easy Rider himself ....LOL
I'm with you buddy
Love watch show on you tube videos
Quinn Martin was very mistaken to fire Robert Lansing from the series. He doomed the series...
ABC fired RL and several other actors after season one. Q/M had no say in thematter.
ABC=Always Been Crap. DIS paid $19B for this sh*t show, which n 2017 accounted for almost 45% of Disney's revenue and half its profits. Since then, ESPN has lost 20 million subscribers and has posted continuous losses, and can't find a buyer at any price. In Mar 2020 it was reported by financial networks that DIS was carrying an 'off the book' debt for the entire amount. In the last 16 months. Since then DIS stock has lost half it's value.
ESPN won't be missed unless you are a fanatic of Cornholing or Womens college basketball.
This really is an emotional episode, forget the rubbish about his commie sister and the way he ended up. He was great in this role, and showed empathy, remorse and he was credible. Shame on the idiots that think otherwise.
Great series guest star peter Fonda
That sound of thunder put a halt to what might've developed into a worldwide holocaust.
The operation of the Norden bombsight did not require any input to drop the bombs. It was all automatic.
You would have made an excellent bombardier. For the other side!
th-cam.com/video/Rbtmb_JrX2g/w-d-xo.html
Just think, in 5 years he would be crossing America on a Harley in Easy Rider.
This show 'redshirted' cast more ST:TOS.
that's war for ya'
Peter Fonda....chip of the old block. Great!
General Savage sure smokes alot.
and it killed Robert Lansing at age 66, sadly.
I think he had that custom pocket sewed into the left sleeve of his bomber jacket so that he could always have his pack of cigarettets handy.
Everyone did in those days.
If I had to go to war everyday
Yea, during the times when the big cigarette companies didn't know they were killing people and yet, once they did know in the late 1960's, they lied about the danger. The same path GMO food is taking.
Peter Fonda looks like he's only 20 years old.
You, General, no longer have the luxury of sympathy..
How young Peter Fonda was at that time!
The guys who did the actual flying were pretty young too. :-) I watched this series when it first came out. Great to see it again.
We were all much younger then, as individuals and as a country.
me too!
The American air crews were there so the Battle of Britain was long over. There were no longer air raids on London. This was a good show for its time but there are so many time line errors for something that was written and filmed less than 20 years after the end of the war. I rarely saw this show when it was first broadcast since it was after my bedtime.
True, but this is still just a TV show...
Battle of Britain: 10 July until 31 October 1940,
In mid 1942, the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) arrived in the UK.
FYI : The BoB was not the last of German air raids. Although not as the same intensity, they lasted over Britain until May 1944.
@@barleyeducated8714 And don't leave out the V-1 and V-2 terror attacks...
GENERAL FRANK CIGARETTE SAVAGE
Poor old Andy will always be Andy...
Dindin Private Andy's just fine the way he is.
In Bonanza a few shows
Peter Fonda!!!
👍
Owen wilson is a dead ringer for peter fonda
I can't squint that hard
Peter Fonda...what a messed up man he was!
Mary is a honey. I'd go AWOL for her too!
He was almost prettier than Jane...
Why do the actress have the wrong hair styles?
Wow, early Captain America on board !
I can't stand watching Peter Fonda, given what he has become.
..
Wow ! The guy was ordered to a flag rank officer's office. He then stole a Jeep. He was AWOL. He belongs in front of a Summary Court Martial and this general makes speeches. WTF ?
1st Lieutenant is a long way from Flag Rank.
I really hate the way these airman salute in this TV show. None of them had any service related training
All the General does is smoke. LOL
No he doesn't. He flies a B17 a lot.
Rather far-fetched story regarding Andy's thumbing his nose at the general's orders. It breaks down the reality of the story!
Personally, I don't care. Most of what's on TV or in the movies today isn't believable either. Old shows had a great message that gets lost if you're looking for reality.
Robert Hall compare this show to the rediculous shit they show now on TV, or in the movies
unirrational let's face it; they can't show aircrew being blown apart by 20mm cannon shells on TV. The viewers wouldn't watch the the commercials...they'd be too shocked and horrified.
TV was designed as an escape from reality...
I agree with Robert. Overall, this was another super episode, but having Andy arrogantly ride off , telling the corporal to tell the General that Andy Lathrop took the jeep is not believable - esp. coming from someone with Andy's nature. These were the type of fantasy TV incidents that were the norm in seasons 2 and 3. Yes, all TV will have some exaggeration, but the basic setup must be believable - esp. in a show like this. Season 1 was so powerful and memorable precisely because it reflected real war and the struggles of these young men in such vivid and true fashion.
I found fondas character intensely annoying. Great acting.
This ep's not that great but the classic sound track saves it.
LOL!!! An air raid and in a "BRITISH" pub. Well you would "NOT" go down into the "BACEMENT!!!!!" HAAAAA!!!! HAAAAAA!!!!! HAAAAAAAA!!!!!!! A PUB HAS A "CELLAR!!!!!!!!!!!"
Basement/cellar, panties/knickers, cookie/biscuit, trunk/boot.. Hundreds of others. Is it really so funny?
Sixties hair and make up....in Combat too.
Give it a rest.
