Catherine, thank you for another fine video. I appreciate your sharing. Please be safe out there dear. I look forward to all of your beautifully filmed videos. Thank you so much. Be safe out there. 🤗
I thought I had seen all your old videos but somehow had missed this one until now. You have come a long ways in every respect. Proud of you to even mention bugs in the mountains. LOL
Nothing better than soaking your feet in a high mountain stream after a day of hiking in hot weather. I really like your choice of music for this video.
Although I’m binge watching through the “social distancing” a long time after this video was produced “Happy Birthday”! What beautiful scenery there. Right now we can’t even walk our beautiful white sand beaches so I’m living vicariously thru these videos! Thank you for sharing!
I thought I had binged all your vids but this one came up in my feed! I'm hungry to watch some fresh hiking but it's just too hot. It's 5000 degrees in Lower Arkansas! Stay cool!
Happy bekated Birthday Cat, Began viewing your more current trecks and your production progression is definitely interesting and considerably more streamlined. Also your choice of music has improved from these earlier vids. You mentioned the condition of the trees. Dane Wigington (channel) of Geoengineeringwatch has plenty to alert about atmospheric conditions. In his words this planet is in peril and he explains the obvious reasons why. Dane is in Northern Cal near Redding and Shasta.
I can't think of a better way to spend a birthday...then in the woods....that is always good medicine!....stunningly beautiful place and awesome campsite!!!......it is always to have some cool water to recharge in the heat......great hike and always good to hike and camp with a good friend!......"The mountains are calling...I got to go!,".....I believe that is a John Muir quote.....I just modify it a bit to "The swamps are calling, I got to go!"...lol
AWESOME VIEWS! GORGEOUS DAYS TO BE OUT HIKING .BEAUTIFUL VIDEOS TOO! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! HOPE YOUR WISH COMES TRUE! BE SAFE! HAVE FUN! SMILE! GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS! ENJOY! ENJOYED! PUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRFECT WAY TO CELEBRATE YOUR BIRTHDAY! THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME TAG ALONG WITH YOU BOTH AGAIN! GLAD THE FIRE LET YOU HAVE A GORGEOUS BIRTHDAY! BE SAFE!
Thanks so much David!! Although, I don't think this area is quite as majestic as the Eastern Sierras, they do allow campfires with a permit. I really enjoyed that and it was a plus for sure!
Hi...I like your Ospery pack...Looks like you had a great time!! The Little Kern looked wonderful...I bet there's good trout fishing there! Thanks for sharing your hike!
Thank you Chris! I love that pack. There are definitely trout there. I need to get a rod, but I still have trouble thinking about the extra weight involved. haha. Good to see you back and looking forward to new videos from you!
I'm sorry I had no idea you had posted this video until you mentioned it in a comment to me. First off, Happy Birthday. What better way to spend your birthday, out backpacking with a good friend. Julie seems like an awesome chic! You are so lucky to have those views, I'm so jealous. As always your video rocked!
No worries Jaxx! I figured uploading it the night before the holiday might not be the best timing. haha. Julie is so awesome. She didn't hesitate to say yes when I invited her having never gone backpacking before! She loved the experience and says she's hooked now! haha. Thanks so much for your support!
Happy birthday Catherine, yet another awesome video from your eye to ours,,.Great to have friends that share the trails with. Wow, got a little emotional when you showed your pendant and mentioned the verse, ( brought back memories of trails past)... Thanks again for sharing...Stay safe and God Bless...
Thank you so much Rockytop! Appreciate it. Glad you were moved in some way. I'm very passionate about the trails as well and I really get John Muir and his love of nature.
Looks like you had a nice birthday! Since the temperatures were in the mid 80s, I would have had to take a dip in one of those beautiful streams. I know that it would probably be cold, if experience serves me well, but probably very refreshing too! The good thing is that you can then dry out in the warm sun while soaking up some rays, and perhaps a nap. Did you guys encounter any Black Bears, as every time I have hiked in Sequoia, Yosemite, or around Lake Tahoe, the bears seem to smell my lunch and come to investigate? Did you use a bear bag, or a bear canister, I noticed that you did not touch on that subject?
Missed that part...ADD! Must watch again! LOL I hate carrying those canisters, but it was easier to use them when I was patrolling the wilderness in Alaska via kayak, so storage and carry not a big issue. Bears (Brown and Black Bears) used to toss them around at night, but could not open them. We kept them at least 100 to 150 yards away from where we slept. Carrying one in a backpack another story altogether. Prefer a relatively light weight bear bag strung over a tall limb in those circumstances.
I had an awesome Birthday thank you! We did dip in the stream, but it was quite cold. Couldn't stay in there too long. lol We did not see any bears. As you know now, we had bear canisters. Just as a double measure, I put my food and toiletries in an odor proof Opsak plastic ziplock inside the canister so that hopefully they don't smell it and come and start messing with it. I always store them 100 yards away and we also prepped and ate our food away from camp. Our food prep and "dining room" was that spot by the river. I keep a very clean camp and try my best to not attract them.
Wow, sometimes I feel like I'm missing out doing most of my hiking and backpacking in the appellations. The views and mountains out there are incredible out there!
The large bear canister takes up a huge amount of space. My pack weighed 30 ons as I carried in 3 liters of water. It was really dry the last time I did this hike and I wasn't sure we'd have any water sources between the trailhead and the river. Thanks for the Birthday wishes!
Happy birthday!!! Looked like an awesome trip, thanks for bringing us along! Of course as soon you say you're all alone, bam! :) Murphy's Law ;) great video!
How much water did you pack per person? Can dogs go into the wilderness? Are the bugs manageable in late summer? We are planning a Labor Day weekend hike/fish trip. Thanks!
Kathleen Conley I carried 3 liters of water since we were hiking approx 6 miles to the first reliable water source. I'm not sure the exact area you are hiking, but take a look at the distance between water sources. When in in an area where water sources are plentiful, I only carry a liter to 1.5 liters. I believe dogs are allowed on this trail, but it's best to check with the ranger as there are different rules for different trails. Most I've been on do allow dogs. In this area only gnats and flies were a problem. I actually only saw one mosquito on this trip. Always good to treat your clothes with Permethrin before heading out and use bug spray. Bring a bug net just in case. Have a great trip!!!
Kathleen Conley yes...we hiked out of Jerky. Your son should be fine. Haha. Hopefully, it's not too hot. That's the only thing that might make it a touch more challenging.
Beautiful views, beautiful river and beautiful campsite. Glad you were able to get out for a backpacking trip, especially on your birthday. Great idea to stay in the same camp for two nights on your friend's first trip. Someone's first trip should be short and relatively easy with great weather. It's best to have them fall in love with backpacking before you kill them on a monster trip. Happy belated birthday!
Thank you Bryan!! Julie says she's hooked!! We are going back out for an overnighter in the Eastern Sierras next weekend! Super excited to get right back out there even for a short one.
Got here from the Golden Trout Wilderness FB page. Digging your B-roll. Nice to see familiar albeit, alternate points of view. Have you done Cottonwood Pass up to Chicken Spring Lake? Killer!
Wow, beautiful landscape! And a belated Happy Birthday! You must have been instantly hooked on backpacking if this place was your first experience :D Glad that the fire didn't get too close though - I know it can be really stressful trying to judge how threatening wildfires are.
Thank you Ruth! I was definitely hooked. Julie says she is now, too! haha I was nervous about the fire. I wondered how we would be alerted if we needed to evacuate. I saw that hikers were still coming in so I took that as a sign we were safe. Otherwise the roads to the trailhead would have been closed and they wouldn't be allowing more people in.
Happy belated birthday! Nice video. I'm actually going to revisit the 1st place I've ever backpacked too in August (Cottonwood Lakes, Eastern Sierra). Which trailhead is this trip you did out of? Maybe I missed it in the vid. Glad you got out there! I have 2 trips planned so far.
Thank you Jon! I hope you film your hikes! I went out of the Jerky trailhead. You can actually go to Trout Meadow and Kern Lake beyond if you keep on going. I'll be out in the Eastern Sierras in a couple weeks hiking Tyee Lakes out of Bishop. I had never heard of the hike, but there were permits available for the overnight date I wanted to go. Looks like it could be pretty cool. I have a couple more after that, as well.
Catherine Gregory I thought you said Jerky haha but I never heard of it. I'll have to look it up now. I haven't been to Tyee Lakes but have hiked to Bishop Pass right next to them. That whole area is striking. I'm sure you'll get lots of great shots. Looking forward to your trip video. There's also an amazing burger place in Bishop. I'm going to try to fit in as many trips as possible August & September! Maybe I'll see you out there. Happy trails.
Happy birthday! 🎁 I really agree with what your friend said about how different running is vs hiking with a pack on. My friend Josh (who works out a ton) always remarks how different a workout it is from anything in the gym. Really enjoyed this one Catherine. Nice to go back to your first one. I've noticed on this one you talked to the camera more and included the interactions too (maybe it was just me). I liked it! Adds a whole new dimension to the video doesn't it?
Thank you Tim! Julie thought the mileage would be a piece of cake since she's used to running, but was really surprised how different mountain miles are and with a pack on. On the first trip, I brought my DSLR!! That was an extra 5 lbs, including case, lens and batteries. I hadn't figured out how to turn it around to shoot myself because of the size, so I used my phone for the "talking to the camera" shots. Plus, I wasn't as comfortable in front of the camera as I am now. I've definitely evolved when it comes to my videography from where I was a year ago, but still looking to improve. Bummed that in some of those talking to the camera shots, I am out of focus. It's hard to see that out there while I'm shooting. The camera focused on the background. I think I need to make sure the "Portrait" icon is showing on my LCD. I'll be more cautious of that on the next shoot.
Cat. I knew it!!! Ive been watching you for a long time, I mean a year and a half something in that ballpark. Now. Since the very first videos I knew it. And now as I am watching this old episode you confirmed it. Hi buddy cancer sign! =D You know what is a gist here, in Id say 9 out of 10 instances we always can recognise each other, in rare cases no. The way you write comments, communicate, walk, live your life etc. Interesting how it works. It is not that I am into astrology (as was said somewhere sarcastically => ass-trology) but it can be quite accurate in terms of characteristics and preferences and things we more gravitate towards, our outlook and worldviews etc. It is all energy. Astrology, numerology are languages of energy. We are it. So I am happy to come across just another enjoyable verification. I had to share it with you. So there you have it =DD
So sorry, Autoplay brought you up just now. A belated Happy Birthday and Many More Too. Great video as always but super shot from tent of fire in the evening! Any chance of fly fishing this summer? And are you changing hair color gradually?
Hey there! Thanks so much!! I'd love to fly fish. I still need to get a rod and of course I think about the extra weight of carrying one, but it would be a lot of fun. My hair has always had a darker underside, it's just more noticeable when the wind is blowing I guess. haha. Also, I wear braids a lot and you can't tell then either.
She's just drive to Kennedy Meadows I took my three axle motorhome up there it was a hell of a drive scared the living crap out of me Nine Mile Canyon whoa
Catherine, thank you for another fine video. I appreciate your sharing. Please be safe out there dear. I look forward to all of your beautifully filmed videos. Thank you so much. Be safe out there. 🤗

Happy Birthday ,Beautiful California ,its so much different than here on the east coast.
Thank you Barry! We are very blessed with so much diversity here in California.

Great way to spend a birthday!
Indeed Brian. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Wow, sometimes I feel like I'm missing out doing most of my hiking and backpacking in the appellations. The views and mountains out there are incredible out there!
They really are and this isn't even the best of them! Thanks for watching!
Wow, that is a big pack. You have more tenacity than I. I hate bugs too.
Beautiful country. Happy Birthday.
