- On this episode we visit the Manderscheider Burgen, the Castles of Manderscheid in English. These two castles are located in the Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The Niederburg, the lower castle, was built during the first half of the 12th century and is the youngest of the two castles. The Niederburg was destroyed by the French in 1689. The Oberburg, the upper castle, is located on a hilltop overlooking the Niederburg. The Oberbug dates to the end of the 10th century and was partially destroyed by the French in 1673 and like the Niederburg was finally destroyed by the French in 1689. Join as as we take a look at the Castles of Manderscheid.

I'm a direct Descendant of the Brothers who built the Castles and formed to town ! I have never been but hope to in the Future . When's the best time of year is best to visit ?
Hello. The oberburg is open year round (at least it was when we visited) but the niederburg, the more interesting of the two castles is open only late spring through early fall. I think April to October. If you plan a trip, I would check the castle's website: www.niederburg-manderscheid.de/ for up to date information and opening times. FYI, the castle is a bit out of the way. I think taking public transportation to Manderscheid would be difficult, if not impossible. I recommend planning to rent a car. The town of Cochem would be a good place to stay and day trip to Manderscheid. Let me know if you have more questions. Thanks for watching the video!
