  • Hey guys,
this time it is Yang from China, who sent me his footage of his single scull rowing. Like many others, he is an amateur rower who just loves the sport and who could use a few tips on how to address critical technique issues instantly.
Here is the link to Biorower: www.biorower.com
His original footage is found here: • rowing 1X
The link to aramtraining.com for video analysis and for the two training camps this year: www.aramtraini...

Great tutorial. Aim for a stable lower part of the back corresponds well to what I saw/heard somewhere else. They told that you should not bring your shoulders forward (and leaving the lower back behind) but start tilting from the hips which causes the shoulders to come forward. Straighten you lower back by trying to lift your sternum. When you are ready to place the blade you have to "Hugh the horizon" as stated in "The art op sculling" written by Jo Padua. Make yourself tall but stay relaxed in the shoulders

Very helpful Aram! I'm sure I have same issues with my sculling and I'll follow your instructions. I'm a Chinese rower based in St. Paul, MN, USA. Would you be interested in coming here to do a training session? We have several rowing clubs here in the twin cities, and we row on the Mississippi. Very beautiful here. I've been fantasizing of sending you a video for public analysis, but I'm not as brave as Mr. Yang Hu. The lake, judging from the lotus in the water, might be Po Yang Hu in Jiangsu Province. So Mr. Yang Hu may have taken part of the name from the lake. Very clever, if it's true. I've been a big fan of your videos, and have been telling everyone about you. BTW, do you do spring training? I may visit Edinburgh in mid May, and can do a training session with you, if possible. Happy 2020, Aram.

@Xiaodan Xu even better. That's where I studied English at Hangzhou Foreign Language school, and taught for two years before I went to Beida.

@Xiaodan Xu hmm, did the video show any landmarks of the west lake, its pagoda and bridges...还有杨柳? I was looking for them, but there's none, just very western like facilities. were old buildings all gone? that'd be a real pity. do you know 杭外, the old one? pretty close to the lake. do you live and row on the lake? is that you in the video? very brave that you sent the video to Aram. bravo. 但是你说话的口气挺冲的,划艇要smooth, 和说话一样。

I find it difficult to spot the issue with the lower back: stability and how to do this pivot correctly. Is there a video showing how this is done correctly? There are so many video's of people doing it wrong. Would like to compare! Thanks for the video's , very interesting and helpful!

I have implicitly talked about it in almost all videos, but never really explained how it is done. Thank you for your suggestion

Hi Aram: Thank you for all of your videos analysis', and tutorials. I am a 57 year old male, and just started sculling this spring. I am addicted. Just ask my ribs. I have sculled over 600 miles in just over 3 months. Pretty much I do 6-8 miles almost every day. Just recently I believe I have created some stress fractures in my ribs. I've had broken ribs before, and if you've ever had them, you know what they feel like. I've been reading how common they can be with this sport. I've watched many of your videos along the way, and with like every other sport, I feel like my body is doing what my coach is asking, but in reality, most of the time, I'm not quite there. Being a beginner to the sport, are there certain actions I may be doing that have caused my issue? Can I concentrate on some things when I am able to scull again, or is it just that I am going at it too hard? Recently the better I have got, the harder I push myself. Maybe I just need to keep it in second or third gear, and cut back on my miles. I would appreciate any help you can offer me. It really sucks to looks at our nice beautiful calm lake, and only be able to sit on my porch. Jeff
