Very interesting. The starting point of traditionally binding a book is to gather the sections of pages (chapters) of the book together with the guards, otherwise known as protection pages. These are then sewn together. The book must sit in a press for many hours after the covering is complete. After which the end papers can be glued down. Once this is done, the book must, again, be placed in a book press or nipping press for hours, days or even weeks.
this is why i like asian style book binding, so much simpler: glue pages together, make holes loop string through holes, tie off at the end. anyone can do it and you dont need special equipment to do it(except maybe an awl to make your holes but you can use just about anything that makes holes. but not a 3 hole punch, i think the number of holes has to be even) simple, and it looks nice.
@georgeddirector Oh, sorry; one more: Is the the whole video for that episode? No, I don't remember what other things they went over, but this was the only one I was interested in. I hope, somewhere in there, you will find your answer. Cheers.
@georgeddirector Not sure what you're asking: Is this the whole video clip? Yes, it was a simple 5 minute segment on How It's Made. They are mostly only 5 minutes long. Is the sound low on the whole video? Yes, I'm afraid so. I might be able to get a better quality with new programs in the future, but for now, that's how it is. My appologies. Is the whole video about bookbinding? Yes See... A bit vague...
I think there's a consortium of people who make sure every video gets at least 1 dislike. lol. I liked this and picked up a few nice tips. (pun). Thanks!
@Bobman4671 Yeah, it's transfered from a VHS recording... Old school, I know, but I don't have TIVO yet... Still, the fact it's narrated precisely, you can tell what's going on.
I mean, even Tandy Leather (similar tools, different names) can't get bone tools for actual use. Unless you find one in an antique shop that's still usable.
Oh. As Dubya said, 'fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on you again and fool me three times, well shame on you!!". So I guess I will have to put my little plastic tool which I don't use and which I bought as 'bone' to its proper graveyard.
You're very welcome, my pleasure. I think the one dislike may have come from someone I berrated on an insipid comment they made on some other video I like. You know, the retaliation he could come up with...
The hard covers need to actually be sewn onto the top and bottom signatures making a manuscript prior to the leather being added. This way the cover is actually sewn as part of the book instead of just being attached by gluing it to the leather. Hope this person didn't pay out the ass for this lady to do it this way. It is going to have to be repaired again in another 20 years or so.
@fromanjoe Well, when some terrorist pops that nuclear device outside the atmosphere, all electronics are going to be fried. Books will be back on top...;)

Very good, I loved it. Thanks for sharing.

Well, when you put it up on a nationally syndicated program, you can film it any way you like.
great video!
Wow, thats a lot of work. I had no idea!
Awesome. If you can get it to a better quality, it would be better but this is still awesome.
Спасибо, я нашла то,что я искала. Вы молодец.

Um amazon's got them for less than $7
Hey guys. What do you do with the excess of the spine of the book? I mean, the thicker cords that you bind each segment of papers to?
Thanks this will help with me making my own books

If you're referring to him cutting the binding strings; a person does that when re-binding a book...
Doesn't make him a jerk...
Wow!
I like this method :)

now i make tea !
"Traditional Bookbinding" I like how they use cardboard instead of oak or pine haha
Availability of material, I suppose.
bone folder made out of plastic....uhmm...and here I thought mine was bone.
ok
Hmm...
I guess people in Portugal don't like to read--that's where the 1ONE dislike came from...
Thanks!
