    We have a Cerato GT hatch. Brilliant little car. Lots of fun through the bends, and plenty of get up for day to day driving. Recently had boot fully loaded and with 4 adults...which it handled like a champ (bit bumpy in the back over train lines apparently). Also the JBL system packs a huge punch. Just all round great value car! Owned since feb: 5100kms.

      Hey, I'm a Ford Focus fan. I own two cars - one is a Ford Focus and the other is a 1951 Ford. It hurts me to say that this generation Focus ST-Line just isn't up there with the other - I wish it was. But that steering is too disconnected and the transmission tune seems to need a rethink. Cheers Richard

    • @Danificationization
      @Danificationization 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@carsguide that's fair enough. It must be tuned differently for whichever region you're in because over here in the UK the focus always wins every group test for driving feel and handling. I hate ford's I don't generalise but they've never done anything for me I just always knew the focus as a greta to drive hatch

    • @carsguide
      @carsguide  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@Danificationization The previous generation was fantastic. The ST and RS are two of my all time favourite track/street cars. Gosh even going back to the XR5 - now that was a little weapon for the time. But this fourth generation car doesn't feel as good. I mean the engine is great, the balance is good, the handling is also good. But steering is like a handshake - get it wrong and it can have a big effect. It could be that the Aussie Focus has a different steering and transmission tune. I'll ask Ford. Thanks mate Richard

      Thank you - glad you liked it and glad you're enjoying the Cerato GT. It's not just one of the smartest buys on the market right now, it's one of the best drives. I really like talking to the Australian engineers who painstakingly tune the suspension of Kia's, and the Cerato GT has been given so much work by them to get it right. Many much more expensive brands don't get any Australian input. Have fun. Cheers Richard

    The start button on the Focus is perfectly placed, you just don’t know how to use it. Place your left hand vertically on the dash and the button is exactly under your thumb. Works very well.
    The rotary gear selector (like on Jaguars) takes about a day (for a slow learner) to get used to and it frees up a lot of space on the centre console. And you don’t have to turn it to P when you stop. Just turn off the engine and it automatically rotates to P. Brilliant!

    Hyundai i30 N Line for me. Recently test drove both the Cerato GT and the i30 N Line. The poor roads around where I live make the "less comfortable" suspension on the Cerato hard to live with day to day. Plus I prefer the conservative styling on the i30.

      Looks like we are not the same. :D I test drove both of them after each other. It felt almost the same but I chose the Cerato GT (in sunset orange). The difference is not really huge between the "siblings". Maybe I can not feel the firmness because my current car is a 2009 Mazda3 SP25 and it felt almost the same as the Kia. The Ford Focus ST drives amazingly. A lot more sporty than the Mazda 3. The Mazda is very comfortable and “zen-like” though. I wonder if you were negative influenced by the Ford’s AT. The manuel one is very good (as is the Mazda’s manual one)
    For most people I would recommend the Mazda 3 of the two, but for someone who likes sporty driving, I see no real competition with the Ford Focus though. Many other reviewers compliments the Focus for this as well.

      Yeah I can't explain some of the stuff he says. He contradicts pretty much every other reviewer out there, especially when he talks about the numb steering.
      Numb steering is something the Focus simply never had, from MK1 to MK4. Quite the opposite actually, they were some of the best in terms of feel.

      You know the Ford doesn't stand a chance when he makes a meal of putting in the luggage. According to the video it has 341 Litres of space in the back which is 46 Litres more than the Mazda yet somehow it magically all fits in the Mazda (practice beforehand Richard ?). Just about every European motoring magazine praises the Ford for its handling, steering and engine putting it top of the class Richard finds fault despite having a massive smile on his face when he is driving the car.
      Having recently driven a i30 and the Focus on consecutive weekends the Focus has the edge on quality, driving ability, infotainment, and sheer all round fun. The i30 is a fine car but inferior to the Focus.
      Some bias has crept in here.

Im just about to put 16" wheels on it with 60 profile tyres to hopefully cushion the around town ride somewhat.

      Kevin, fortunately (or unfortunately) Mazda have completely altered the materials they're using for their interiors. A lot less nasty plastics, a lot more standard equipment and a very weak Australian dollar all lead to an increase in price. But the difference is noticeable and the intention is to be working towards higher end products. This strategy is working well in Japan, where there are a lot more Japanese choosing fully kitted out CX-8's over much cheaper Toyota Noah and Voxy's (having driven the Voxy and CX-8 - it's night and day). It's a strategy that is starting to work in the US where they are drawing comparisons with already well selling Lexus and Infiniti models.
      But not really required in Australia. Here they're known for driving dynamics, and possibly they are taking a risk by not including cheaper base models.
      For what you get though, the price is competitive taking into account crappy exchange rates.

    • @matthewclifton7990
      @matthewclifton7990 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glenn, the other three car manufacturers here managed to keep the price down and competitive. Its all very well to say they are spending more money on materials to make the inside feel more premium but they seemed to miss the ball here. Outdated poor engine, highest fuel consumption, extreamly bad design which creats serious blind spots, and poor passenger space and a boot thats really impractical. Thsts the diffrence audi and bmw offer great interior but they also fit they cars with powerful engines and driving dynamics. The previous mazda was a much better fit. Thars the point i think, the other three are gaining in leaps and bounds yet mazda went for cosmetics instead of substance.

    • @carsguide
      @carsguide  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep... pricey. Cheers Richard

    • @inodesnet
      @inodesnet 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@matthewclifton7990 being a cleansheet engine from 2012 and still the highest compression NA on the market, it is not as outdated as you think. The Mazda engines you see are actually more technical than the other engines here. They are the engines that allowed the progression to the holy grail engine, the Skyactiv-X coming out this year.
      No one has been able to do what Mazda did to their diesel (it's the only low compression, and the only diesel that passed post VW government testing). But the Skyactiv-X will be interesting. Hyundai, Toyota, GM, Ford and others attempting to create a compression gasoline and failed.
      If the other manufacturers were really making leaps and bounds, Toyota wouldn't be investing heavily in Mazda and signing engine deals to allow Mazda to produce engines for Toyota.
      Toyota wants Mazda's diesel and X because they cannot produce their own. Toyota is sharing their hybrid and battery tech back as well which is fair.
      Regarding price, Mazda USA has determined that the US economy has finally picked up. The difference between now and the previous model is that back when that model was sold, the US was deemed to be one of the few price sensitive car markets. The average American just has not had the same disposable income as places like Australia and Europe which have been option sensitive markets.
      This is changing. Previously the US has counted on their large market and economies of scale to drive sales. But price sensitivity meant that all companies had to push on price.
      An example of this is VW. VW sells far less models in the US by variety that a small market like Australia. They also have to produce lower grade models in Mexico and TN to reduce costs because Americans don't want t pay too much. Australia meanwhile gets a lot more models, a lot more options and generally all from Germany. But Australians are generally wealthier and it's this reason something like a Scirocco could be sent to Australia in small batches whereas VW said that it wasn't viable sending to the US.
      The last two years this has changed though. Mazda USA research has said in the last two years, the US market has swung to be more option sensitive. The new Mazda 3 might be a car for a new economy and as such the expense on better materials (and they are another level on the others) is what the US wants now. Not 3 years ago.

    • @matthewclifton7990
      @matthewclifton7990 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @glenn stewart, again worst fuel consumption, worst performance and slow compared to the other three and yet you still think its better. Maybe the x will be better but its still not in this car and people who buy now wont get a free upgrade so its all irrelevant. We are talking about the now and this car sadly is not up to par over the koreans. Interior yes well above the others but it still dont make up for the fact its outdated and impractical. Not to mention every review has criticised its blind spot due to poor design. Four month waiting list currently for cerato gt in Australia proves public are coming around.

    Good review.
    GT also has heated and ventilated front seats apart from the fact that they are leather. Passenger seat has height adjust and driver gets dual position memories. I bought the car for the seats and am going to just have to accept the performance and handling that came with it i guess...
    ... oh well...
    But seriously i traded a 2011 Santa fe with similar seats and was looking at Tucson and sportage (although in truth i didn't need even this much car) but to get the decent seats in those is 15 or 20 thousand more than a cerato GT.
    And the GT isn't a small car in the sense of space only in classification. It is essentially identical in size and weight if not tiny bit bigger (e.g. in boot) to my 3- litre v6 tf magna from some years back. I loved that ad a family car for four. And the GT makes more power and torque, from a lot lower in rev range, is fitted with every safety feature known to man, has much better seats, uses a lot less fuel, and goes, stops, and handles better. What's not to like?
    To save you time, the size and weight is also similar to a vk or vl commodore. The later commodores were wider and a lot heavier. But i don't think a commodore would keep up with the GT (and yes ive owned 3 Commodores including a vr police pack).
    Oh and if you don't want to frighten nanna with the induction noise, just leave it out of sport mode. Then it is near silent and just purrs around using the fact that peak torque comes from 1500rpm and sips at the fuel ... i did a run yesterday with a little highway and some suburban running for 6.3 l/100km on an engine that hasn't even done 500km yet. What will it deliver when it has run in and loosened up a bit???

Have done two trips to Melbourne and back to Sydney and got 785 kays with another 80 left before filling up again. That is quite exceptional for a 50 litre tank. On the highway it was 5.7 l / 100kms. Love the seats which are sensational on a long drive.

The thing I like most of all is the driver seat which moves to allow ingress and egress easily and then goes to the memory position. So easy to get in and out. My Merc didn't even have that feature. Also like how the directions on the sat nav come up on the instrument panel if you want it to. Nice touch. In terms of zip, put it into sports mode and take off from a standing start and see how quick it is. Great for overtaking although you do have to watch for speed as it can get to silly speeds very quickly without you realising it.
