WLTOYS 10428 K949 Electronics Upgrade | Test Run

  • Our WLTOYS 10428 (K949) has been great...but fried a servo. And when that happens you can either buy a new factory servo for way too much $$$...or just go all-in on a replacement setup.
    We fortunately had a tx/rx for it and an ESC we didn't need anymore...so after buying a $38 high-powered servo from ZOSKAY (www.amazon.com...) we were READY!
    Overall, this was not too hard of a swap. Fairly straightforward.
    Note that I didn't even deal with the high/low gear servo - we just locked it into high gear where we normally use it.
    Also, there really isn't a good receiver box location, so we just put the receiver in a balloon and hot-glued it to the top of the servo. Works great!

    I have 10428 & 12428, which I am looking to upgrade. The 12428 appears it will be more challenging due to it size (Being small) more modifications required.
    Why didn't you simply remove the Gear Servo?

    • @RoadsideRC
      @RoadsideRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree on the 12428 based on the size.
      I was concerned that the transmission would get bumped into neutral.

    I have 10428 here in Indonesia. I think it is a great little truck but.....the electronics are not very good. I like the programable transmitter however I already burned out the esc. It might have been the larger battery I used (mAh only). The new esc got home made larger heat sink and no more problems for now. I did twist the drive shaft at the rear end, the replacement was filled with baking soda and super glue, so far it is holding up well. The radio range is not very good and at times the speed control especially is not smooth. I am thinking to upgrade the electronics, but here in Indonesia getting right parts is difficult. These 5 wire servos are a pain, I would like to retain the 2 speed gear box control as I find that feature awesome. It almost makes this buggy 2 in 1 car. I am new to this rc thing so thanks for sharing your project.

    • @RoadsideRC
      @RoadsideRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are welcome!
      Yes, getting nicer controller would still allow you to keep the 2-speed option.
      Fortunately, the servo and ESC can be rather standard parts like I used.
      Good luck finding the parts.

    Great vid Troy! I have been planning on doing the same with my 12428 which is the slightly smaller version on the one you have. I'm just waiting on some extra funds to get an esc(looking at the hobbywing 1060 for $25 on Amazon) for it since I already have a spare servo and receiver to go in it. These wltoys rc's definitely are a great bang for the cost of them especially since there's replacement and upgrade parts available for almost all of their models.

      Basically any standard 540 size brushless system should work. Something in the 3300kv range should be good.
      Unless you go sensored, it won't do very well at slow driving anymore. It would be more of a basher.

    • @RoadsideRC
      @RoadsideRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used an old Traxxas transmitter and receiver.
      You must get a transmitter and receiver combo, nothing will pair with the factory equipment except direct replacements.
      Note - the choice I made was also to eliminate the hi/lo gearing.

    • @RoadsideRC
      @RoadsideRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Two things to get the servo setup right.
      1) before putting on the servo horn, make sure the car is powered on, and your steering trim is centered. This makes sure your steering is close to centered.
      2) Once all is assembled, set the servo end points. This is sometimes called dual-rate. This is the setting on the controller that limits how much the servo moves. Without this, you may ask the servo to move too far, and damage it.

  • @billy9506
    @billy9506 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Might be worth a mention that you do not need to replace the ESC or transmitter.
    I know the original brushed ESC was an ESC/Rx combo but they do an stand alone RX to match the stock transmitter (yes, you can bind to it).
    The Rx is called A929-124.
    It might help if servos need replacing in the future as the A929-124 uses standard 3 pin.
