I enjoyed this film! And I'm just gonna say it, Alien 3 wasn't the best, but it might just be Sigourney Weaver's best Alien performance.
Thanks for watching, everyone! Next stop, Predator!

Her total loss of fear and ability to confront it freed of any concern for her own mortality or having anything to return to really gives her something that puts her on a different level from Ripley in the other films.

You should check out the Assembly Cut of "ALIEN 3".
It is almost a totally different movie than the Theatrical Cut (there are a lot of deleted scenes, you will be surprised about how much they actually cut out of the movie, and there are also a lot of alternate scenes as well). I actually think that the Assembly Cut is a lot better than the Theatrical Cut.

I'm honestly glad you did decide to watch Alien 3, yeah I think its the weakest of the three but it does have its place in the trilogy. I also grew up watching the theatrical version of the film and think its better. Yeah the extended version has some interesting scenes but I think the theatrical version is just a cleaner cut that moves smoother. Thank you again for the great reaction.

31:53 Just a note- the Alien was never CGI in the film- for scenes like this it was a "go motion" puppet (as opposed to stop motion- the cameras would film continuously while puppeteers made the creature move with rods).
The reason it looks like poor CGI is the compositing was bad.
I believe there was one CGI shot and that was the Alien's head "cracking open" as the molten lead cools from being doused with water.

There's an entire deleted plot line with prisoner Golic.... During the fire sequence, Junior (The rapist) sacrifices himself to lure the Alien into the nuclear storage bunker and they catch the Alien. Then Golic escapes from the infirmary and thinking he has a connection with it (cos it hasn't killed him twice) lets it free... You can see all this in the "Workprint" version. An the documentary "Wreckage & Ruin" on the making of the film is really fascinating.
The Alien is actually a Rod Puppet - not CGI, but they are REALLY badly composited... First Alien movie to have all CG aliens in Alien 4

  • @masamune2984

I love that the company lied to the very end: It was just another Bishop android, even though it said it wasn’t. (As clearly evident by it having half its head hanging off after getting hit directly with heavy pipe/wrench.) Ripley was DONE with that crap.

  • @PierceArner
    @PierceArner 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

There are a number of things I really appreciate about *_Alien³_* - It took a series about survival & flipped the script where you're forced to live with that predation as the only thing left, and where the salvation is actually a MASSIVE fear because the Company is _always_ the biggest threat, and makes the emptiness of death have a meaning where she could actually find a purpose in it that isnt failure, because it's still a victory over the Xenomorph AND the Company.
The iconic Runner & Ripley being face-to-face where that flip finally happens feels too iconic to ignore this film even if it doesn't hold up as well as its predecessors.
There was a TON of interference in making this film, and the other cuts are radically different (like seeing the massive unique Queen Facehugger, and the Runner emerging from an ox rather than a dog). The DVD behind the scenes stuff were something that gave me a TON of respect for the film managing what it did.
Playing as a Runner Xenomorph in the old PC game AVP2, you can sprint along walls & ceilings EXACTLY like the chase sequences in this, so it really is an important piece of the overall franchise despite its complications.
When it comes to the larger franchise, I tend to think of it in three sorts of continuities: Alien, Aliens, & AvP.
    • Alien, Prometheus, & Alien Covenant are largely existential cosmic horror and in line with Ridley Scott's themes.
    • Add in Aliens, Alien³, and Alien: Resurrection and you have more of the Science Fiction Action Horror as James Cameron's sequel carried a heavy influence also connecting to games like Alien Isolation as a bigger.
    • Then you get the AvP & Predator films for a shared continuity to enjoy them as a bigger sort of franchise-level Sci-fi Action feel.
Given that Alien: Romulus has Ridley Scott as a producer and he loved the director's cut he saw, I'm VERY interested to see how the film feels in terms of those general categories.

Welcome to the production hell that was Alien 3. The movie went through 5 different scripts.
The original William Gibson was described as "Commies in space" and had the Sulaco drift near space belonging to the Union of Progressive Peoples. They board the ship finding Hicks, Newt and Ripley in cryosleep and get attacked by a facehugger that was hiding in Bishop's torn up body. They then bring the ship back to their space station and are attacked again by xenomorphs and Ripley's cryotube is damaged, Ripley is put in a coma because of this and then Hicks and Newt get woken up. Newt gets sent back to Earth while they keep Hicks around to learn about the alien. Hicks then finds out they've been experimenting on xenomorphs with cloning and genetically modifying them. The movie then turns into what you'd expect from an Alien movie of Hicks running around a space station trying to survive. This is generally the script fans say the movie should have used as it seems to be the most fleshed out and Alien feeling.
Eric Red then got bought in and quit after 2 months because of how much the higher ups were interfering and he felt the draft that got delivered to Fox wasn't remotely his story.
David Twohy then got given Gibon's original script. First thing he did was get rid of the communism stuff because the Soviet Union had fallen at that point so they felt it was outdated. He also was the one to set the movie on a prison planet.
Then they bought in Vincent Ward who moved the movie setting again from the prison planet to a monastery. The monks there then think Ripley and the alien in her is a test from God. Then it goes the route of them thinking the trial is having a woman in the monastery and Ripley is there to test their temptations so they lock her up. It then focuses more on Ripley's struggle with knowing the alien will eventually kill her and likely everyone else and she eventually finds a way to end herself.
Then we finally got the final script from Walter Hill and David Giler which took David Twohy's prison idea and a lot of the religious stuff from Vincent Ward's script.
I do like a lot of Alien 3 mostly because of Sigourney Weaver but having so many different ideas from so many people clearly left some glaring problems with the movie.

The Assembly cut is far better and has a more coherent plot. Weaver really didn't want to come back for a 3rd film - took some persuading, it was supposed to be a conclusion - interestingly she also insisted on no guns, not wanting another shoot em up movie, I really like this movie - it's supposed to be a resolution and it achieves that - it's also about sacrifice and courage - it's aged really well. It was shot in a disused power station - they are real environments.

No fan should ever tell another not to watch something (unless it's gross in a truly disturbing way). Every movie has value even if it's a lesson of what not to do and to give fans a better appreciation of those that work.
Alien³ also has value by not trying to mimic either of the first two films, instead delving more into a study of character, including the decision to break Ripley after surviving two encounters with the Xenomorph. It is also when they introduced the biological element of the Xenomorph taking on characteristics of the host.
It's seen in a far more negative light that it deserves because most fans didn't like losing Reese and Newt, but I always appreciated such a bold decision. Losing Newt in particular also contributes greatly to Ripley's decision to sacrifice herself. If Newt was still alive she might have made the situation worse.
The Assembly Cut is closer to the original Fincher version, but we will never get his true version since he refused to have anything to do with it after all the studio meddling.
My personal collection includes Alien - The Director's Cut, Aliens - The Special Edition, and Alien³ - The Assembly Cut. The only other Aliens movie I have is Aliens vs Predator. It's fun and adds to the canon rather than ignore it.

I very much dislike Alien 3 but can appreciate the things it does right. The sets are great, the cast is great, the alien mostly looks good and Fincher is a fantastic director as usual. What I hate is the story. It feels about as good as a punch in the gut. I’m not even upset about the death of Ripley. It made sense for her to sacrifice it all to wipe out the aliens and keep them out of the hands of Weyland. It’s the off screen death of Newt and Hicks that was the big slap to the face. Even the superior recut of the movie doesn’t save it from being a miserable experience. Oh well, I’m glad some people get some enjoyment out of it.

"The CG doesn't look great" - that's not CGI. Computers weren't that powerful back then. That's the result of compositing a miniature puppet onto a scene and the lighting just didn't match all that great. They tried bringing the alien to life multiple ways in this film. Different life size puppets, a full on costume, miniature puppets recorded in real time and later composited, etc. At one point they even had a dog in a xenomorph costume, but I don't think it made the cut because it looked too silly.

The diehard alien fans are just mad that the third version of the film never made it to film. For me anything to do with the trilogy is great. It's the experience you have to have in each film. First was a horror. Second was a thriller/action and the third was a drama/thriller. You have to see what each one is trying to do.

Sigourney Weaver was dead set against making this film unless they killed her off, which sealed Ripley's fate.
Also it was her own idea to shave her head. However there was a clause in her contract that once filming ended and she started to grow her hair back, if any re-shoots were necessary and she would have to re-shave her head, she would be paid an additional $40 000 dollars.
Of course re-shoots were necessary- so the makeup effects dept made an ultra realistic bald cap that cost $16 000, saving the studio $24 000.

I like this movie, I've always defended it. I am relieved you liked it too. Most people seems to dislike it. I like the removal of modern weapons, just like in the first movie. It makes it more tense. However, It has flaws. You are spot on with the effects comment and props. Still lots of great scenes and I like the kind of dynamic it has with the religious prisoners.
Edit: I am confused, I remember scenes not showed here. Might be a different cut I guess.

There’s actually only one CG shot of the alien in the movie, when they hit it with the sprinklers. The ones you thought were CG are actually digital composites of a practical rod puppet built and operated by Richard Edlund’s team. This was actually one of the very first films to do digital compositing.
I really recommend watching the documentary about the making of this film. David Fincher was constantly at war with the studio during production. He started shooting without a completed script and had to write it on the fly after Vincent Ward (What Dreams May Come) departed as writer/director after his own issues with the studio. Set construction had already begun for Ward’s version, whic( was to take place in a monastery rather than a prison. Fincher had such a negative experience that he refused to work for 20th Century Fox again until he was guaranteed creative control on Fight Club.
The “Assembly Cut” is a VASTLY better film and restores 30 minutes of the film, including an entire subplot surrounding Paul McGann’s character.
Hicks and Newt’s deaths were part of the story beginning with Ward’s original outline, mostly because Ward found the character of Newt to be annoying.
Legendary SF writer and father of cyberpunk William Gibson wrote a version of Alien 3 that would have featured only a cameo by Ripley, who would be comatose for most of the movie. In Gibson’s script, Newt is safely returned to Earth and reunited with her extended family. The story instead focused on Hicks, who finds himself trapped aboard a station full of researchers working for a communist colonial regime, who obtain the alien DNA and use it to engineer an airborne pathogen that causes characters to spontaneously mutate into xenomorphs. This story - along with another script prepared by David Twohy (Riddick) - were contingencies in case Sigourney Weaver asked for too much money. The Gibson script has since been adapted as a graphic novel, and also as a radio play featuring Biehn reprising his role as Hicks.
Ripley was killed at Weaver’s request, as she felt trapped in the franchise. At the studio’s insistence, the ending was reshot to include the chestburster. However, Weaver had already grown out her hair, and had a contract that would have netted her a significant payout if she was required to shave her head again. So the studio instead commissioned an elaborate buzzcut hairpiece that had to be meticulously glued down over her natural hair and blended in order to get the shot.

If you want to know what Alien 3 could have been I would say check out the book Alien 3 by William Gibson. It’s based on a screenplay he initially wrote and was green lite but then the studio interfered and changed up the story to what we got. But the book is a fun look at a different way the story could have gone. Plus it doesn’t kill off all our favorite characters from Aliens

Fun fact: One of the conditions Sigourney Weaver wanted to participate in this film was for her character to die. I still strongly suggest you watch the Special Edition of this film, as it is superior to the original cut. This movie went over many re-writes and problems with the script, to the point where a lot of it was done last minute.

Definitely watch the Assembly Cut as it adds a ton more to the story with some significant changes. Alien 3 is a great conclusion to what was the end of a trilogy IMO. They got rid of the big guns and brought it back to basics in a way. As you said, Ripley was never going to have a happy ending after all she'd been through and she went out a heroine.

  • @mattschliemann9683
    @mattschliemann9683 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

Contrary to popular belief there's actually only one shot of cgi in this film. When the molten lead is dumped on the Alien and jumps out. They douse it with water and the surface of his head cracks. That's the sole cgi shot, the cracks. CGI hadn't quite taken off yet back then.
There's a pretty nice (and very long) video on TH-cam comparing all the differences between this and the Assembly Cut. There are some story differences between them, such as the alien birthed from an ox, not a dog.
So no cgi you might say, then how did they do the alien, it's a lot of animatronics and rod puppets. I've always thought it was pretty decent looking in most scenes. When I originally saw it, it didn't stand out to me but much later viewings it just looks a totally different color than the rest of the scene. I dunno how I didn't notice it at all originally.
And that's the problem, they did a bad job compositing it into the scene, and definitely screwed up the color correcting. In the Assembly Cut they redid these effects and it fits much better. I think they may had added just a tad bit of cgi because it was put together years later. But I think only to blend it in better.
I like this movie, and though it's a shame about Hicks, Newt and Bishop, it didn't bother me so much they were killed. And at least it wasn't totally off screen as we did get flashes of what's going on at the beginning.
I believe Michael Beign was paid to return as Hicks though he wasn't in the actual movie. I believe there was an interview he talked about it. Was kind of an odd story.
Thank you for not listening to the nay sayers and watching this. I've seen lots of people enjoy these further movies in this franchise and also terminator, where you'll also have a lot of people tell you not to go beyond part 2. We're here for your reactions to things good or bad and not the nay sayers.
I subbed to the channel when I saw the Thing reaction in my feed. Thats one of like 3 movies I'll sub to a channel when I see them, even if I don't watch anything on the channel right away. Alien 3 would have been better if just didn't involve Ripley, and instead focused on completely new characters dealing with the Xenomorphs. I understand Sigourney Weaver was the face of the series, and they were probably worried that audiences wouldn't be interested if she was absent. But if there was no Ripley in the movie, they could have done anything they wanted with the story and it wouldn't have had a negative impact on the ending of the second movie.
Also, the egg on the Sulaco at the beginning of the movie is a massive plot-hole. Many people just assume the queen laid it during her brief time there at the end of Aliens, or she brought it with her from the planet..but none of those theories work. The queen was incapable of laying eggs at that point, as she no longer was attached to her egg sac/ovipositor. Also, there is no way she could have brought the egg with her, as we see her chasing Ripley and Newt down on the planet right before Bishop picks them up, and she clearly is not carrying any eggs with her. You also have the problem that the first 2 movies clearly established that the eggs don't open until a host gets close enough...while the egg in Alien 3 is isolated with nobody around it, yet it still hatches. The eggs in the first movie were presumably there for thousands of years, but not one of them opened until Kane finally showed up and got too close.

For a fun, short trailer that takes a more action spin to the film, check out the Alien 3 "Trailer C" that uses the "Bishop's Countdown" music from Aliens.
Likewise, the teaser trailer is also an interesting curiosity- as it has the film taking place on Earth (which an earlier version of the film's script did).
Whenyou get around to watching Alien Resurrection, it's also worth checking out the teaser trailer to that film afterwards, which is pretty famous itself (and introduced a Bishop's Countdown-like piece of trailer music titled "Code Red" that has been heavily used in trailers and TV spots ever since).

Watch the 30 minute longer 'Assembly Cut' - its a far more rewarding watch than this theatrical one. Even in the original version however the complicated sound mix for a film of this vintage is surprisingly good too, lots of small conversations between the prisoners etc can be clearly heard with a decent surround sound system, it really adds to the atmosphere.

"He's the Noonien Singh of this franchise..." - I think you meant Noonien Soong. Khan Noonien Singh was the genetically modified villain from Star Trek TOS and The Wrath of Khan. Dr. Noonien Soong was the creator of Data, Lore and the rest of the Soong androids. In this case Bishop is in fact the creator of the Bishop androids, though he has a much longer legacy than you know to the Weyland-Yutani Company. I'm excited for you to learn of this in future movies if you're willing to put up with some of the lesser entries in the franchise, or franchises I should say.

I don't have major issues with this. Probably, the CGI. I think the story just shows "you cannot escape it. Eventually you will die." Ripley had her chance, but went back. People hate that Newt dies. How could they "keep" her alive in the story? Also, I remember there was rumor that Sigourney didn't really want to come back unless Ripley died. For me, Alien 3 also shows that not even the worst humans can handle the alien. It's more cruel. The movie is dark. Ripley finds out Newt died. And that she has an alien inside. It's just dark. Souless. Anyway...I think people wanted another movie of Ripley saving everyone and sending the alien into space. Hahahaha

He was pissed not just because he wasn't in the film, but that he got word there was a full sized bust of himself (for his "death" scene) and that it looked like the chest was opened up. So he was doubly pissed that one- they were using his likeness without his permission and two- he believed he was going to be the source of the Alien in this film.
There was back and forth between the studio and Biehn's agent who was threatening to sue. The studio asked if they could pay him- Biehn finally agreed they could use his likeness for enough money (his face on the computer screen) but "that *F'ING* alien does not come out of my chest!"
He also said in hindsight that had he known that David Fincher would eventually become the director he is, Biehn would have allowed David to use his likeness for free as long as he cast Michael in one of his future films.

And every movie of original quadrilogy is very different and every one of them is great on their own terms. Yeah, both 3 and 4 have their problems, but they are worth watching, very distinct films. I think that some people don't like them just because they are so different. Yeah, Ressurection have huge 90' B-movie energy, but within those confines it is amazing. With prequels I cannot say that they are good, but they are still interesting to watch, if only to see how father of the Alien lost touch with his creation. And still, both of them have some fascinating ideas.

no, this movie managed to disrespect the series in the first 3 minutes. I don't care about the performance and art direction after that - it took away the one thing that made this series unique. The way they built the second film off of the elements of the first, and rather than do that again - they just threw all that away. I'll never get over that. And in my opinion, the series never recovers.
