Im totally with you on fact this is a correct way to diagnose problem, but is one big But with your method. you need man ho have had spend £100k to get knowledge and anode £100K for all the gear you have be able to do such think. Unfortunately for us industry is looking for cheap ways how to fix the problem and that is having someone with no knowledge no tools and even if he have to work longer it doesn’t matter client will be paying for it.😢
Totally agree! And that's why we will keep doing it properly...yeah its expensive for us to buy the equipment...but it's the RIGHT way to do it...customers come to us from all over because they know we will do it right, rather than us spending their money on unnecessary parts because the computer says so :)
Absolutely brilliant ..I'm not a mechanic but someone who is looking at a LR4 and investigating catastrophic engine failure...found this so fascinating..thank you
Joe, not only a solid diagnosis but logical and incremental tactics. As a bonus you provide a really clear demonstration of the use of the Pico. Enthralling bit of education. Thank you
Excellent diagnosis, great to see you putting this out, and prove to the general public that us modern day mechanics are in fact a highly trained intelligent technicians.
John Reed thanks John 👍 And yeah I agree there are decent, intelligent, and highly trained techs out there. There are some absolute mutants too though 😅
Brilliant video - you know what you’re doing and explain everything methodically and logically. I hope a lot of people learn from this and you, keep up the good work!
Now seeing video. It’s awesome. That’s what customers like to see and know when they send there expensive vehicles to your shop. There would be no wastage of money due to misdiagnosis. Love your video!!! Watching from the Caribbean.
What a brilliant video. Finally a proper way to diagnose a problem, explaining each step of the way. Extremely usefull, thank you very much 👍. Minor detail, the quality of the video would increase even more if you use a tripod to steady the camera. Thus you can stand beside the engine pointing out things, with the image being more stable. Still, very much enjoyed it !
Just found your channel and yes indeed. You are great, full explanation, fully reasoned. Absolutely excellent, thank you. Just watched you CAN bus video too, superb.
Great video. thanks. Regarding the noid light, I would have an old injector or injector coil to plug in instead of a noid light. But maybe the ecu doesn't like the fact there are 5 open circuit injectors anyway!
Steve Ashcroft yeah a stripped down injector could work! But as you say with the 5 others disconnected it might have a fit anyway 😅 The injectors on these are piezo stacks rather than a coil...but again there might be a way to make it work 👍👍
@JAS LR, this information gold thank you for sharing ! If you don’t mind I will be harvesting any information from you I can to help with my own venture. Literally only last week I’ve started working from home workshop with an aim to concentrate mostly on Landys as after spending a few years working at local JLR dealer I’ve officially got the landy bug 🐛.......!
As a rule I think mechanics sell themselves short, you can always find someone to service your car cheap for cash, try and do the same with a plumber/electrician etc and they will tell you were to get off! So if mechs did no cash jobs, they would in effect be gaining job security and better wages.
Bit of a catch 22 situation! If mechanics were actually paid properly for the sometimes (generally always on jlr) job complexity they would be happy enough to just work for there wages but unfortunately even in main dealers the wages are pathetic....! Well at least in Ireland anyways! Now working for yourself as a mechanic is a much different situation, way more of a headache but much more profitable making money as apposed to just a wage
Hi, so what happen to the car, did you do the job? I have a D4 land line and it's had it's troubles e.g. ehand break, add blue problem, this us my 2nd D4 and I had 3 x D3 too. I live the cars but here the problems and the big Bill's. I hope to keep it long term it only has 43000 on the clock I've had it 3 years plus. Drives lovely and looks mint top of the range, so I'm very interested in what happened to that car. Thank you.
Hi , Great work Joe , I have watched lots of videos on these engines and they seem to be plagued with problems . Out of interest ? how many miles did it have on the clock and if the owner had it repaired , the cost of project . I have always liked these D4 , but not sure if my pockets are deep enough , to enjoy owner ship , as the family may starve .🤔
Hello would you do the same if your turbos have gone and effected the motor. I was told engine has to be stripped to find out if motor requires replacing.
Could you help me got a range Rover sport 2007 will not start up cranks but no fire changed. The fuel pump in tank. Pressure is 2 bar coming out the tank change the injectors
Great video! Very informative. Just a question...would the diagnosis finish there or would it continue in order to find out why the piston cracked? What would or could be the cause for that happening? Please excuse my ignorance, I'm a novice at this but find it fascinating. Thank you. Cheers
Excellent tech advice man, but your mic is buried inside your jacket/coat and is picking up body noise and clothes movement. Also too much camera movement. Just saying...
Ok , so now maybe you could pass this on to LRD for their appraisal an distributors. But at the end of the day, and the amount of TH-cam bad accounts of this horrific bad engine design which keeps failing, from broken crankshafts and now holed piston isn’t it about time they owned up to their cockup, and start doing something for the owners who are just waiting for their very expensive vehicles to disintegrate. Maybe even cause a major accident, if it hasn’t already happened and we don’t even know the exact reason?
This landrover guy talking about saving customers money is a bit Ritch when he has just cheaply and quickly diagnosed a wrecked engin on an almost bring new Discovery 4 That is not economic to repair with a +7000£ bill for even a used motor that will do the same thing again at any time!!! Or snapp its crankshaft Wonderful car horrible engine Winder if you could get a Toyota engine under the hood???

Thanks Mark - I do enjoy it :)
JAS LR Morning Joe, I’ve just re watched this, got even more out of it. Can I ask if you carried out the repair and what it needed? Cheers
Excellent diagnosis, great to see you putting this out, and prove to the general public that us modern day mechanics are in fact a highly trained intelligent technicians.

Hi sir, awesome vid, would it be possible to review my pico waveform i sent via mail, regarding non start d3 as per one of previous vids. Many thanks
Brilliant video - you know what you’re doing and explain everything methodically and logically. I hope a lot of people learn from this and you, keep up the good work!
Excellent knowledge of the diagnostic tools and how to use them. Would really like to see the repair.
Wow man. Very impressive. Good to see someone who can actually diagnose a newer style engine. Thanks for taking the time.
Thanks Bill!!

Thanks Richard! I’ll…umm…get round to doing more videos one day 😅👍

I looooove my Pico
Very good video.
Solid diagnostic with intelligent tech and intelligent equipment.
Well done, I am way to camera shy

That was brilliant. Very clever piece of kit and great knowledge of using it 👍
Good old times😎 wish you made more video’s like this😬😅😉 you know how I am..... your biggest fan.

Solid diagnosis. Not so solid piston. Piston Pissed off :)
Great job, Had to laugh though when you said " That's a great fault" not if you are paying the up coming bill😂😂

Nice one mate. Proper mechanicing

Nice diag, would have been nice to "hear" the misfire before you started the diagnostics.
Yeah I did miss that bit out :D next time...
Not all heroes wear capes 👍
Interesting video, thank you :) Hantek offers these tools for under 500€ ( 2 probes + a 4 channel receiver)

Top video excellent diagnosis 👍👍
I've just learnt so much thanks
Fantastic video
My local garage would just say it needs a new engine , then charge me a small fortune. But these engines can be fixed
Top job very well explained 👍🏻
Thanks John :)

34:30
That is a looooong way of finding the problem
I thought it was spark ⚡️ plug all this time lol
