  • WANT TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR WATERCOLOUR WASHES?
We often reach a point in our progression as watercolour painters where our work seems flat and it fails to capture what we want to express about the landscape. There may be several reasons for this, but one of the most common reasons is that our watercolour washes are boring and lack interest. In this video I show you how to vary your brushstrokes and introduce you to a method of painting that I call 'Painting in Threes,' with exercises that will help to give your paintings strong visual interest.
This is the final video in a series of six for those beginning their watercolour journey. The other videos in the series are:
    1) What is Watercolour
    • 1. What is Watercolour...
    2) Watercolour Equipment

    3) Watercolour Washes

    4) Mixing Your Watercolours
    • 4. Mixing Your Waterco...
    5) Painting a Watercolour Landscape

Thanks Oliver!, a confession has now been made, to myself, suddenly i realise i have been trying to paint a `masterpiece` every time from the start, without practising these essential techniques first.

Hi Oliver. I've wanted to watercolor for about 50 years. I'm 70 now and started a couple of months ago. Your painting is wonderful and I really appreciate this "Beginners" series. Thank you so much for taking the time to make and post these. I've learned a lot from your channel.

I have been watching the first six tutorials in your beginners list over and over again and finally I think something is sinking in. I’ve been attempting watercolours for about a year and have been pleased with only two paintings following various teachers. Your tuition is so superior and I feel a breakthrough. I’m attempting to paint the view of Old Harry and so far it’s not too bad. I agree that practice is the key and want to thank you for the time and patience to explain the process so minutely. This is by far the most difficult medium I have tried- a real challenge

Excellent "First Steps with Watercolour" series! I've been painting for almost 2 years and finally took an in-person Watercolour Landscape course over this winter that I had hoped would help me to improve. But it did not! I left each session mostly frustrated at my inability to grasp the concepts that the instructor attempted to teach. But after watching this wonderful series, I think I finally get it! Your style of teaching is superb! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

Wow! The most important lesson i think . The most difficult part for me was (and still is) is to stop replicating patterns while painting, to remember to leave some part of the paper alone, to use broken lines instead of complete ones.

This is a game changer. In trying to 'add' interest to an ill considered wash it is so easy to overwork a section, so this 'rule of 3' really does help - it forces us to really consider what it is we are looking at and make decisions as to what to show and what to leave out before we even begin, as well as reminding us when we've done enough. My efforts are proving far less muddied following this simple rule.

Oliver, your intimate knowledge and understanding of watercolour together with your superb teaching skills have given me the fresh impetus I needed to try, yet again, to master this challenging medium. I have made some progress over the years with pastel, acrylic and latterly, oils but my forays into watercolour have ever been disappointing for the most part. A lot of the material you have so generously posted has highlighted many of the areas where I am going awry. I am very much looking forward to putting your advice into practice. Sincere thanks for your generosity in sharing your many skills with us.

This is one of the best watercolor techniques lessons I have seen. We can practice all other aspects of watercolor techniques but if you don't learn how to leave room for imagination then as you say you can strangle the life out of a painting. There is a reason why people tend to hang landscape paintings on the wall rather than landscape photographs. Landscape paintings executed well quickly emphasize the emotion of the scene without getting bogged down in detail. We have to practice this just like everything else.

Wow! This is the second time I've heard you say to add some texture first as an underpainting and then go back over it with a glaze. I have similar types of cliffs in my area and the texure I add onto the cliffs always looks separate from the rest of the painting...this is so much nicer! Thank you for the insight!!!

I haven’t been able to resist trying your exercises most days while we’ve been on holiday (we’re at Stoke Fleming at the moment). I’ve managed a fairly decent barn roof but struggle with consistency. My results aren’t reproducible but I’m learning what works and what doesn’t when varying the wash. Hopefully, in my (very) late 40s, I haven’t left it too late to fall in love with watercolour! Thanks again for your excellent tutorials, they’re so inspiring.

You are such a wonderful teacher. I took up painting just prior to the pandemic and as I was getting to the point where I needed hands on help, I couldn't take in person classes; most of the online tutorials just don't explain enough about how much paint to use, or break down how to know when your paint is wet or dry enough to get the desired effects. It's one thing to be told what to do and another to be shown. Thank you so much for these.
