  • Now we've done all the Sherlock Holmes canon I've got stuck into Father Brown. This is a particularly interesting one with Smythe's curious company of robot cooks butlers and unflirting maids. All a bit proto-technocratic: perhaps he was having a go at H. G. Wells. Anyway it's rather delightful in lots of ways and the descriptions of Hampstead (is it Hampstead?) in the snow are great.
I've dug out a microphone which I finally like: it's a Warbler Mk... er... I forget which mark but I rather like it. (I must stop this microphone polygamy!)
So, it's read by me, Greg Wagland for Magpie Audio 2023.
It almost looks like Spring has sprung outside. The leaves on the trees in the churchyard are emerging with some confidence! Temperature not too bad.
    Ciao!

This has been one of my favourites since schooldays, when I had already worked out that as long as you looked like you were supposed to be doing whatever it was you were doing, nobody noticed you! Ha! Some superb descriptive passages, as you rightly observe. Such a treat, despite the alleged robots!

With each new post from you I find myself in a dichotomy: on one hand I am glad and enjoy every second of your amazing voice, on the other I dread the moment the posts will stop coming because there will be no more books to read. :)

Well, I'm feeling relatively healthy despite my advanced years, so hopefully the posts won't dry up just yet. Cheers blackswan1900

Excellent reading. This story seemed very modern using robots and A.I.

I wanted to take a moment to say how glad I am that my favourite Sherlock Holmes narrator has started the enjoyable Fr. Brown series, now that the former has come to an end. Chesterton had a brilliant mind: his wit, philosophy, social commentary, and delightful sense of humour are all apparent in his Fr. Brown series, but it takes a stellar narrator to make these qualities truly shine. Thanks for taking the time to make these. Looking forward to them. All the best!

I have watched the TV version of Father Brown, and having never read the stories myself, thought they were a true representation of them..light-hearted and comedic. Your reading of them soon cleared that misconception. They are, in fact, cleverly worked out mysteries and I am thoroughly enjoying listening to them. Thank you

Now that I know when they were written it makes me wonder why they set the TV version in the 50s. Still enjoyable to watch

Thank you, Greg Wagland, for your excellent reading. I enjoyed listening to this story on a a stormy day while painting the walls in a beautiful room.

Mr. Chesterton is a WordsSmith. An amazing capacity for the English language. Even having this writer digging deep, scratching her head, on certain words and their meanings. Awesome. Thank you. Any Father Brown I haven't read or listened to is gratefully accepted.

I enjoy these but they kinda make me feel dumb, I have to listen 2 or 3 times before I catch it all. The sherlock ones I could listen, clean, text friends and play a game and still completely understand what was going on. 😅

Perhaps they are a bit more philosophical. Although some Sherlock endings have left me wondering what exactly just happened.
