I was not a hard core TNA fan but watched during the time of the Joseph Park gimmick and thought it was entertaining as hell. The thing with Abyss though is that it kinda came off as a poor man version of the Undertaker or Kane. A lot of the TNA guy's were criticized back in the day for being too focused on the work rate, Abyss himself wanted to do hardcore stuff to the point but after a while that stuff really doesn't have shock value anymore and I think Abyss went well past that point.
That being said the Joseph Park stuff was brilliant, easily the most fun gimmick at the time and was something the crowd easily got behind. I really think he should've stuck with that even longer than he did, and it's largely the booker's fault that they couldn't do more with the gimmick.
It's commendable how loyal Abyss was to TNA but in wrestling it's rarely make sense to stick with one company unless you're a top guy - which Abyss sadly was not. He was more of the guy that put top guy's over. Simply being loyal to the company that keeps you in a midcard spot rarely ever translates into someone becoming a legit main eventer.

His loyalty to TNA was well placed. In those years, TNA always seemed to be on the cusp of turning the next corner and becoming bigger.
On the flip side of things, WWE had alot of ill will from the fans and everyone knew instinctively that Abyss would be fed to Undertaker and then he would be so poorly used that his stock would drop to 0.

I would have done the same thing as Abyss. TNA was a good choice because for years after that TNA was going up and there's more meaning to be a part of something growing and becoming something rather than going to become another cog in a machine that doesn't really need you.

In the build up have Abyss seem unstoppable have him beat big name former champions in squashes in the lead up and have Abyss super confident in the fact that Taker has never beat him maybe have Taker interfere in a title match before Mania but keep Abyss undefeated giving a reason for Abyss to face maybe Ministry of Darkness Undertaker having turned to the darkside being the only way to beat Abyss and keeping Abyss strong in defeat. If I remember correctly, The Giant (Big Show) Won his first WCW Heavyweight title by DQ from Hulk Hogan after Hulk's manager Jimmy Hart changed the contract without Hogan knowing so that he could lose the belt by DQ, and since Jimmy was still Hulk's manager when he broke up the final pinfall and hit the ref, the DQ win was in favour of the Giant, giving him the belt. Admittedly the tite was made vacant the next night but still.

Loved the play on Cultaholic's "What Happened to That Wrestler?"
I gotta say, Ring of the Hawk is EASILY my favourite segment from this channel. I think it'd do that segment good to do an extra-long video with a wrestler that had closer to 60 matches. It would be a huge undertaking but I would definitely check it out. I'm sure the rest of the shuvit squad would too.
Abyss was a helluva character and a great hand in TNA. He wasn't booked the best, though I would argue that he was booked well for a big man at the time. He - like Big Show - could disappear for a bit and reappear later to get his heat back. The main problem with Abyss was that TNA never fully capitalized on this. They only ever jobbed him out without ever letting him get a big win. This kind of booking diminished "the monster" and essentially made him just another guy. Chris Parks was a pretty damn good wrestler throughout his run in TNA and I did enjoy seeing him on television. I wish he had a proper sendoff and they used him in a way where he could help others get over.
Abyss could be compared to Dolph Ziggler. Kind of over, never given that full-push and used to elevate other talents.
