You can't make real progress without asking the right question. Gates tried to respond politely and implicitly that China's system is different from the West, not good or bad. But he didn't put those words out because he knew it was politically incorrect. And he knew that the anchor would not understand. The West or India doesn't stand for the standard of democracy or freedom. But people under the western democratic system have become arrogant. Decades of brainwashing have convinced them that their system is the best. However, people who have been to China and who know China have changed their minds, including Bill Gates, who is trying to speak the truth but hesitates. This is a world where English dominates. It doesn't matter what kind of political system a country has, its how the system brings benefits to its peoples, India proudly proclaimed they are the world's largest democracy country but look at the standard of living of its peoples, one will get the answer by just walking around any cities in India compared to China, Russia. Saudi Arabia, UAE, Brunei etc just named a few, they are not a democratic country but their population are living well (health cares, public safety, no famine eg) even very much better than most countries around the world including US, Europe. One size does not fit all. Different country has different history, culture, etc. Democracy is needed to be modified based on it and adjust it over time. For example, when the majority of a nation's population are ill-educated, then voting can be only manipulated by powerful wealthy group and individuals. This situation applies to almost, if not all, democratic countries.

Economic, technological, structural, educational etc etc. look at the trains in India. People standing on trains, having to drive around cows in peak traffic.
