...At 0:50 to 0:55 when you draw a box, it creates a new layer with a linked shape. When I draw a box it just draws a light grey box on top of the dark grey background layer. What did you do to make the box a new layer with a linked shape?

I just worked it out - you need to select the word shape from the drop down menu at the top from the choices Shape / Path / Pixels . I guess your photoshop version represents that with a little icons at the top for each word instead of the dropdowns for Shape / Path / Pixels.
