  • Hey ya'll! these are my four easy and affordable recommended tips to reduce the amount of plastic you are using on daily basis. This in turn will result in less microplastics in the environment. This video is intended for those not used to reducing the amount of plastic we use. Also below are links to some of the news and scientific articles that address some of the claims I am making in this video.

    What is an easy affordable thing you do to reduce plastic waste?

      I like to rinse and reuse yogurt containers and the like for storage. I find some plastic carryout containers are sturdy enough to be reused for packaging food over and over. I reuse grocery bags as trash can liners.

      I use a safety razor for shaving so that I only need to replace the blades, rather than replace the cartridge head of a modern razor. I also opt for bar soap instead of liquid soap because the packaging is lighter.

      Greg Spell love these suggestions! I also use bar soap. I switched after making my video on chemicals in body wash and because I was getting skin irritation from liquid soap! Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Made a diy drawstring phone case from jute & cotton was like $2.00 because the thread was old & the jute was on sale for $1 dollar.

    That reminded me of a study of a Japanese university where they created a washing machine that filters out microplastic by using sound waves. It is not a solution to our problems,, but it can help filtering out plastics that is already in use.
    If you already use nylon or polyester, I heard that ironically you shouldn't wash them in eco mode, because it uses less water which causes the fabric to rub more on it's surface and releases more microplastics that way.

      @imariwalker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Would you be willing to share that study? I would love to read it. Filters are still great steps to limiting microfiber release into waterways. And I never thought about the abrasion within the washing machine. Thank you so much for sharing and giving me something to think about.

    Another great video. The clothing critique will be tough but will try.

      I always struggle with the clothing as well but I do my best to shop a little less overall.

    I appreciate how practical these suggestions are! I feel like reducing waste is often intimidating or leans towards videos about having a mason jar with 4 years of trash in it -_-
    I recently started reusing the glass jars my juice/cold brew coffee comes in as a water bottle at home!

      Thank you! I don’t want to make recommendations that I wouldn’t do myself. Going zero waste holds a lot of privilege to it because it can be expensive and time consuming to make those kinds of waste free choices. Plus not every enjoys that kind of lifestyle. We have to balance our happiness with doing our part for a healthy planet. Thank you for watching and leaving such a wonderful comment.

    I never thought about synthetic textiles contributing microplastics. We have a place to drop off fabric in my town to be used in some scrapping process. On reduction, I save the plastic containers from takeout when they're sturdy enough (soup containers). Find great use for them as small trays or for storage.

      Reusing fabric is a great way to increase the longevity of all fabric which is great! I save my containers as well! And depending on the restaurant they sometimes give me compostable Togo trays. Thanks for sharing!

    I personally have banned all forms of glitter, balloons, faux nails, faux hair weave, pads and tampons as well as plastic/rubber hair ties. Also most women use the single use razors which are very bad and go to landfills as well as shaving cream from the stores. I think the shaving creams are never going to be chemical free enough for me to go back to buying them. I use my tweezers for my face but that's it. Those are my tips!

    • @imariwalker
      @imariwalker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are amazing tips! Substituting the razor blades and shaving cream is such a great idea! There are so many problematic chemicals in our products, that is always a good idea to find a natural homemade solution if it’s accessible. Thank you for sharing!

      Why not use organic soap I know it is not cheap but it has no para parabens and toxic stuff

    Imarii I love your hair!! And it's unfortunate that we have to drink bottled water for fear of contaminated faucet 🚱 water. Michigan water should be good, but I doubt that it is🤔. We're too close to Flint and I'm sure the government has never replaced the old piping infrastructure. 😔

    • @imariwalker
      @imariwalker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can always check your county website to see the water quality of your tap. If you would like, I can make a video on how to check if your water is safe? They are pretty cheap and easy test kits you can buy. Flint water is definitely not safe but a lot of communities in Michigan are fine. It’s important to remember that Flint water became terrible overnight because of the change of water source and environmental engineers didn’t do their chemistry right. But before, their water was safe to drink.

      @@imariwalkerI guess he or she meant tencel or viscose. Good material tho linien or hemp would be better as it is fully natural fiber. Oh and try to buy smth white you can dye it later to avoid synthetic dyes
