  • Sleep difficulties are very common in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders with an estimated prevalence of 50% to 80%. This is important because disrupted sleep is associated with a number of daytime symptoms as well as parental sleep disruption and stress.
In this video, pediatric sleep specialist and child neurologist, Pinar Polat, MD, discusses the most common causes of sleep difficulties in children with autism and our multidisciplinary approach to treatment in the Collaborative Opportunities to Maximize Effective Treatment of Sleep (COMETS) Clinic at Children’s Colorado.

Dear Pinar, Thank you for your presentation. I am a retired Ass CNC . My granddaughter is ODD . Aged 3. She & her mom ( my daughter), live with us. We are at the end of our rope. Having employed all but pharmaceutical intervention. As the tone implies, our intervention strategies do little to improve our granddaughter 's attitude towards bedtime or sleep routines nor to duration of sleep. The anger issues are devastating even to professionals. Treading on eggshells and choosing your actions and words very carefully to regulate someone else's emotions is an extreme vocation.

One of the reasons I love to stay up and in fact woke up at night was the peace and quiet. I loved it and was able to think freely and clearly at night due to that peacefulness and lack of sensory stress. I just need solid sleep cycle segments whether I get up in between is a lot less important.

I’m curious if you have found any solutions because we are in this boat almost to a T. It’s very frustrating when running on little sleep especially when they go to school early in the morning.

My son also had a lot of sleep issues. By following outdoor in the evening, after dinner walking/cycling, hot/lukewarm bath, and massage are helping him little by little. This we follow as a nighttime routine. Please check for a more healthy and digestible dinner (sugarless/junkless). Also, certain medicine tastes and lights in the room (even the tiny light), noise, etc. might add up to sleep issues. So please check for the additional surroundings as well.

@@godless_rain22 I feel really sad for these children. Yup they need to go to school. It's 😭 very sad for parents to see their children suffering.

My grandson didn't sleep as a baby! He is some better now, but they better not ever wake him at night or during nap time because he won't go back to sleep. And he's very restless in his sleep. BUt what do you do about it? They;ve done everything mentioned in this video except for medication. Where do you go for help. There is NO ONE around here thats going to take this issue seriously or do anything to address it. We live in Arkansas. He's 2 years 4 months and currently in OT, PT, and Speech, and 2/3rds of the way through the official diagnosis. He has feeding issues too and sensory issues. I picked up on his issues early because I'm an SLP. He didn't walk until 2 and only because of therapy.. He finger flaps when happy or excited and he's non-verbal though he babbles and seems to be imitating some sounds or words.

Get some ambien. It is the only thing that worked for my son. He is now an adult and still needs multiple sleep medications and stays up most nights and sleeps during the day. To say "create an environment" for sleep is laughable. Try getting a child/adult who is bouncing off the walls, running around, jumping on furniture with hyperactivity with a routine is not going to work.

@@np100I feel you. My son is a teenager and is hyperactive. I’ve given up because I’ve tried everything except ambien.

Very informative. I have a twin son 32 years old who has mild autism and developmental delays. He definitely exhibits issue of with sleep. Are there any resources for us as parents that we could access to help him?

Would any of these symptom descriptions and prescriptions apply to adult ASD?
