@@ChristianJiang mate, the thing is at the year 800 ish there were a split between arabic numerals that result into two distinct shapes, that is western and eastern (after they were derived from hind gwalior that composed by Al-Khwarzmi). I have seen about this supposed origin innumerous times on the internet, but *it is NOT real* First: it isn't Arabic numeral, it is Hindu-Arabic numeral, because it was created in India and the _"Arabic"_ Al-Khwarizmi (that was actually a Persian) have first described it outside India, originally, the algorisms were so much different, I can't put an image here, neither a link, so you'll need to copy the link and put a dot: tinyurl(dot)com/numeralsorigin . This image is very simplified, I wasn't able to find a better one in English. As you can see, the numbers aren't like those on this video, for example, the seven have never had this stroke in the middle, neither this curvy thing(?) on the top, the middle stroke is only used on the handwriting to not be confounded with the one ( 1 7 , It may be kinda tricky to distinguish if you write like this, but you can also put a stoke in the bottom of the one, or, as I do, write the one like |, just a vertical bar). Also, the nine have never that curvy thing on the bottom, it hasn't changed so much from the Hindu until nowadays, only the Brahmi one was a little bit different.
You are right, original numbers were completly different, it was during adoption of them in Europe when the "count the angles" rule was added and numerals evolved into the ones we are using now.
Al-khawrizme had wrote a book on calculation of the Indian numbers, and so, Al-khawrizme worked on developing the numbers with math base, to reach this form you watch in this video.
