    As an amateur radio operator, you cracked me up when you said those antlers on the Arby's logo were a shortwave antenna. 🙂 As for the burger, I'm definitely going to try one myself, though at $9 a pop, probably just once. As for the subdued "gamey" taste, I'm sure Arby's processed the deer and elk meat so as to remove much of the gamey taste. Keep up the great work! 73 de WB4DW

    Venison does have its unique properties, but that's typically a bit more lost with farm-raised specimens. Having eaten a fair bit of venison, it's really not too different from beef in general, but it's very lean.

  • @wedge1977
    @wedge1977 ปีที่แล้ว +116

    This one was strange for me. First of all, I love venison, and elk even more so. I tried this burger on the release day, and truly enjoyed it. I could actually taste the flavors I was familiar with - definitely surpassing the beef - and I left feeling like it was the best burger I had ever had at a fast food restaurant. But, a couple days later I stopped at a different Arby's to grab one. That experience was far different from my first. Their burger was more dry, lacking the flavor of the other I'd had, way more "gamey," and it was extremely firm. It was just okay, but basically lackluster overall. So, based on those two experiences, either some Arby's prepare their food better than others, or the meat quality is completely inconsistent. I really don't know. If you try it, hopefully you'll get a good one.

    @gunlovingliberal1706 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Gamey is a relative term. For example, when beef was first introduced to east asian cultures where it was not common, they described it as gamey. To this day many recipes from that part of the world blanch beef to remove the "gamey" flavor. Also the cut of venison or elk is very important because the gaminess comes from the fat. If Arby's uses the loin for their blend, that part is the least gamey. That would also explain the high cost because loin is where the filet mignon comes from and is expensive.

    • @euj0
      @euj0 ปีที่แล้ว

      If gamey is a relative term, how would there be a baseline to say what East Asian peoples would use to ascribe those qualities to beef? Also Oxen and other cattle are native to East Asia. They have eaten "beef" for centuries more than they didn't for religious purposes (Buddhists don't eat beef). So they were not "introduced to beef"

      I would posit that most people have no familiarity with gamey big game like elk and venison, so they are used to fattier, less dense meat. In the case of Arby's, since they have to mass produce the burgers, it also has beef added for the fat content, since elk and venison are both very lean, even when farmed like their product almost certainly has to be. Some people complain about the price, but if they were to try this at a local gourmet like Bonnell's or Tim Love's Texas gourmet places, they'd have to cough up $30-50 for the same thing; same thing for wild boar, rabbit, rattlesnake, or other exotics. I'm looking forward to trying it.

      I’d agree. I just finished eating one. Over the last 50yrs I’ve had my share of wild game meat. People would be surprised how off putting straight up game meat ground up and cooked like a burger. Low fat content they typically wind up like a hockey puck. Typically I blend my game meat with pork or 70/30 high fat beef. Looking at the patty it’s got some density but still stays juicy and nice char on the outside. I would expect very similar at a sit down restaurant but expect it to cost 1/3 more. I’ll eat it again.

    Plenty of people have commented on him mistaking antlers for antennae, but I'm still stuck on the fact that he called it a top hat. It's a ten-gallon cowboy hat, not a top hat...
    As for his point that there wasn't a lot of buzz about this menu item, he's certainly correct. I had never heard of this until right now, a year too late.

    I could definitely taste the exotic meats in what I had, but I've had them before so guess I know what to look for? I think they blended just enough regular ground beef into it to make it palatable for the majority. I loved this thing! I know where there's an elk preserve that lets you get right up close, how wrong would it be to go eat one of these with them?

    I'm going to try it.
    I've had a Bison Burger, Wild Boar, Shark, Quail, venison and they were good.
    This burger ought to make PETA furious!!

      If you have had a real elk, bison, or venison burger, this burger isn't going to be comparable. It's a blend of meats and is going to taste the same as any other burger. But if your only goal is to make PETA angry, this is the burger for you. It includes beef, elk, and venison. So three kinds of dead animals instead of one. When I was visiting Wisconsin Dells, I make it a point to try every kind of meat possible. I had elk and bison burgers. And then I found a jerky shop and tried every kind of jerky imaginable. The list included python, turtle, ostrich, and I think either alligator or crocodile. With some of them, the spices in the jerky covered the flavor. But turtle had a horrible fishy kind of taste to it. That one was especially bad.

    With Elk being such a lean meat, I can't imagine it would add much flavor to a burger.

      Venison is lean too yet it's quite flavorful. I hear elk is mild though.
