40 Ton Humpback Whale Leaps Entirely Out of the Water! A Video by Craig Capehart

- It was a rare clear, crisp, cold, winter day offshore Mbotyi in Pondoland, Eastern Cape province, South Africa (formerly Transkei).
The seas were unusually calm that day on the Indian Ocean. That wouldn't last long, soon returning to howling winds, whitecap waves, and giant swells! Did I mention it was cold - on land, at sea, and in the water?!
We are four SCUBA divers in a small "rubber duck" inflatable boat with two powerful 110 hp four stroke outboard motors. Clive is captain, Carlos is divemaster, and Levi is deckhand.
We are hunting for sardines. It is the annual world famous "South African Sardine Run", a mass migration of pilchard fish up the east coast of Africa.
Actually, we are not interested in the sardines but rather the predators they attract. Hungry bottlenose and common dolphins herd the long line of small sardines into compact groups called "bait balls". Once a ball is formed, a feeding frenzy ensues. Dolphins, sharks, and birds feast on the dense pack of small fish.
An ultralight airplane is overhead, looking for the action. Sightings are radioed to us and off we go at breakneck speed, hoping to record some real action. (Marius Nel, pilot)
Sadly, our six or seven hours daily on the water entail mostly waiting, waiting, and waiting a little longer until we find the elusive sardine bait ball.
Entertaining us while we wait are migrating humpback whales. Some are a mothers with calves. Some are males traveling in small groups.
This day, there were few sardine sightings but the whales seemed to be everywhere! An unexpected bonus!
This video shows a humpback whale mother cow swimming with a calf. It shows an adult 40 ton whale on its back, slapping both its left and right fins on the water, then leaping entirely out of the water!
It seems that never before has a recording been made of an adult humpback whale leaping entirely out of the water! A very rare event, indeed.
Dolphins and even Great White Sharks have been seen flying out of the water, but this is a first for an adult humpback whale!
Note: I sometimes have to remind my northern hemisphere friends that although it is summer in July and blisteringly hot and dry in parts of America and Europe, in South Africa it is exactly the opposite! It is dark, cold, winter now! Did I mention that it is cold?

Imagine being an early new world explorer a thousand years ago, and seeing these MONSTERS leap out of the water. It must've been absolutely terrifying. Amazing footage.

But let's assume I did mean it literally for a second, there is still legitimacy to that. These animals, these beasts, to early explorers absolutely must have elicited fear and anxiety when sailing, which is exactly what a "monster" would do.
When my mother was alive we would go whale watching off Cape Cod and see the humpbacks do this there. There are few things in life more wondrous than to look up into the eye of a whale as they splash you. The smaller the boat the more spectacular the view. I've been in a tiny 24 foot boat with the outboard cut off as dozens of humpbacks breach continuously for hours. It never fails to astonish me how such massive, majestic beings can fly out of the ocean and come crashing down mere feet from you without creating hardly any wake like a champion Olympic diver getting perfect tens every time. You don't even have to chase after them. You need only meet them half way and they will swim right up to your boat and say hello, literally. On more than one occasion I have had a fully grown adult humpback come right up to the boat and give it a gentle nudge then place it's flipper right on the bow yet barely displace it more than few pounds. It is truly amazing how such a huge creature could take such great care in being so gentle. We could learn many lessons from them.

Great comment. I, especially, liked the way you described what you saw. It, was, almost, as if I was there.
I just went today on a whale watching tour in Cape Cod and saw many humpback whales. A mother and her calf among 5 other ones. They literally would come up to the boat, swim around it. Go underneath the boat, to the other side and did this for about an hour. We saw them tail smacking the water, side swimming with their flippers, all right next to the boat. It was quite a wonderful experience. I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't been so sea sick though. I'll have to take more preemptive measure because I would love to do this again.

I guess that has to do with most of us on some occasions. If you have a wife she can be very helpful when it comes waking you up or a noisy alarm clock that won't stop unless you command it to so do. Keeping intervals when using an alarm clock may also do.

THIS is the real "sea world" and the only way anyone should ever be lucky enough to see these glorious creatures. No whale should ever be stuck in a cement pond and be forced to entertain!
That means 99.9% of people will never see a whale. That may not bother you, because you get to see them, but it is not in the best interests of the people or the whales to have only a few people understand what they are like.

Sitting down and watching Animal Planet or Nat Geo, you can learn everything you want to know about whales. Whales don't belong in a cement swimming pool, it's as simple as that. How would you like being forced to live in a bath tub full of water just so people can see you? I care about all animals and I am not a fan of places like Marine Life, Sea World and some zoos. They capture the animals so that they can put them behind fences and assist or force mating so they can make money. If there was no demand by people, most of the places like Sea World would go under. Sea World does do some great things, especially when it comes to rescuing injured and sick marine life. They nurture the animals while helping them heal ~ and when that happens they are returned to the ocean where they belong. For animals that can't be released/returned due to injury or illness will 99% of the time be given to a rescue organization or a sanctuary .
Just Looking - Orcas are not endangered at all. They are abundant in the wild and they are stone cold killers. If anthropomorphism is your thing, how would you like to get eaten alive by a pack of Orcas as you were trying to find food for you and your family? Or watch them cull out your children and just eat them alive? That happens thousands of times a day in the oceans. Don’t you care about those animals? To take fewer than 30 out of a million Orcas and put them in a situation where people can see them in person is a good thing, both for the people watching them and for the long term health and survival of the species.

While other pods in other parts of the world my not be endangered, they are certainly studied on a continual basis. National Geographic has a Television Remote Imaging Program, known as Crittercam. It was used in 2002 to study the diving behavior, the movement patterns, and the diet of Orcas in British Columbia and Washington state area. There is so much research going on currently, perhaps you should do your own due diligence before responding with nonsense! Orcas have been studied for well over 50 years, IN THEIR NATURAL HABITAT and those studies continue to this day. Go do some real research on Orcas and then come back to me. Killer whales are highly social animals and putting them in a cement swimming pool is just plain abuse!!! The rest of your argument is pure drivel and utterly ridiculous. Enough said!

Some animals need to be kept in glass. The endangered or orphaned ones. And some really love it. Otters in particular are always the happiest animal in an aquarium. So are porpoises.

Actually, they jump like that, so the impact with the water can remove the annoying barnacles that like to attach themselves into their backs and nose.
That is pure speculation on your part. Do not put human emotions on animal behaviour. Recent studies are suggestion that breaching, as this behaviour is called is likely a form of communication as the sounds carry for many miles and can be hear by other whales.

Its nice to think so but they are trying to scrap the painful barnacles off. Check out the video of a whale scrapping his bellie on a boat rail, leaves the bloody things on the deck.
They do it to get rid of parasites on their skin lol that's a pretty energy costly thing to do just on the slight chance they might impress some humans on a floating island. To them your just screeching like any other animal. They use super deep clicks to talk to eachother. Most human tones wouldnt even register. Just think do you play to impress the birds chirping near by.

Several years ago off the coast of Maui, I had the fortune of seeing two humpback whales doing a double breach! A lot of people caught it on cameras and phones. I was one of the few who saw it in real time. Some didn't realize what had happened until they saw it in playback. I have no regrets and it is forever etched into my memory!
But they got it on video.

+PrintScreen The problem is when people confuses real necessity with cultural aspects. The whales for example: I don't think any country today depends on whale-hunting to feed it's population. Japan still does it for cultural reasons in front of everyone's face, calls it "research" and *surprisingly* sells the meat of those whales (who knew they would do it, huh?).
Same could be said for whale-hunting in Norway, seal-clubbing in Canada and stupid rituals/festivals like the whale slaughter in Faroe Islands and the Yulin dog meat festival.
All of these are primal practices that shows we still have way too many egoistic cavemen between us using culture to justify their stupid behavior in the goddamn 21st century.
the whale flapping her fin is the female. that motion indicates she wants to mate. then the males fight each other and show their strength (jumping, running into each other, blowing bubbles) to win the females affection. once the female chooses her male they run off (humpback whales have never been recorded mating). then the other males chill out and start kind of dancing with each other sometimes. they're amazing!!

But often times mothers and their calfs are some of the friendliest beings you can meet underwater.
Hell you can even have a great time with Orcas in the wild
jump into a kajak and paddle in British Columbia the Orcas there are used to see humans and will often check out who you are and what you are doing in their world, but they wont attack. They can see that you wont be food and that you don't want them as food, so they are playful and curious about us

Bottlenose Dolpins are famous for giving themselves names, Orca groups teach their young everything they need to know from how to hunt to how to have fun.
Sperm Whale pods are made either from females and their young or half strong males that form friendship like bonds until they become older and wander as lone old bulls
Most Baleen Whales don't have as close bonds for long, Humpbacks care for their child a year und then the child is off on their own, but those whales still protect each other and can reunite with their mothers

I've always loved the sheer size and strength of these majestic beings.
Whale watching is one the most incredible life experiences; especially seeing humpback whales. I was lucky enough to to see a pod in Alaska several years ago.
I could watch this all day. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a marine biologist. Until I realized how long you had to be in school! But anything to do with the ocean like this is breathtaking and amazing. I love the ocean :)

Very cool video. I wish someone could capture them underwater swimming upwards to jump out of the water. All underwater shots show them moving so slow. It would be cool to see a video showing how fast they have to get going to get that big body out of water.
Whales don't like scuba diving gears they will run away mostly
All(mostly) the whale shot in water is recorded by free diving
