I’m 52. Back in the 80’s my friends and I got bored with D&D and began playing Star Frontiers. What great memories.

This was one of the first games I played, my oldest brother had Star Frontiers, Traveller, and Top Secret

I remember this from early 80's comics. I remember thinking the cover was rad. The ship (to 9 yo me) looked like a cylon raider the dude was cool, the lion? Guy was Awesome, and the lady made me feel kinda funny. (Again 9 yo before the internet okay 8 bit or asci porrn on was on BBS's..- still simpler times.)

Big fan of the game back in the day. I did not appreciate that style of ship style, no gravity unless under thrust, until the Expanse.

I had it way back, my friends never would want play it instead of D&D so I read it and was ready but I was like the youngest in that crowd and they were like “no”. I had that Marvell RPG too. I liked the story.

I love this game. I have it on my shelf. Thinking I might introduce to my kids after our dnd campaign is done

Star Frontiers is still my favourite game system, skill-based combat mixing melee, ranged, vehicle and aerial combat going on together in frenetic six-second turns. There were only 13 skills in the initial set, Alpha Dawn, but subskills resulted from them with varying starting percent chances. I paid less attention to Knight Hawks and Zebulon's Guide to Frontier Space, but the really expanded skill-list of Zebulon's Guide is there for those who want it, along with that mid-80s fad, the colour-coded Action Result table similar to original Marvel Super Heroes.
It is well worth your attention and study.

This is the first TTRPG I’ve ever played. I was in the 6th grade (1986) and we played at recess. I don’t remember a thing about it.

Cool. I never did play this back in the day. Mostly I know it from all the articles in the Aeres section of Dragon Magazine. Nice intro to the game. I am very tempted to pick up one of those box sets from you, Eric.

Alas, I've already unloaded them. (We recorded this a couple of months ago.) The DrivethruRPG reprints are quite good, though. I've never played it without the maps and chits, but I see no reason why it couldn't work theater of the mind style, just like most TTRPGs. Calculating movement and range is no different than most other games

If it hasn't been mentioned yet, there is a small but dedicated Star Frontiers community playing the game online through Roll20.

The ship layouts are “ovals” because the ships are “sitting on their bottoms,” like a Saturn V rocket, not the Millenium Falcon,

You need to go over to DWD Studios, they are doing things with SF. Also the magazine.

I recently started checking out the two fan magazines, Star Frontiersman and Frontier Explorer. Great stuff! They do a great job of expanding this game and its universe. And all for free / donations!

Yep, Star Frontiers. I may have played AD&D first, but this one I owned first. Well, the blue boxed version that came out before the Alpha Dawn set. I still have the starship map which was later repurposed for our Robotech game. I had to reacquire the box set, but I got a good deal on it on eBay as well. It was a fun game and I do wish TSR had done more with it. Like you Tig, when I started getting nostalgic I looked up videos here as well. Not many, but at least now there's one more.

I don't know how true is it, but I read a rumor that Wizards of the Coast is prepping a new edition of Star Frontiers after getting a lot of feedback from the community that there is interest for one. Fingers crossed!

@@EricSanJuan I've heard the same. I hope it comes about. When they started putting out the PDFs I remember hearing they did that to keep the name as someone else was planning on trying to use it. And then there's the Star Finder version of Pathfinder that came out. We shall see.

One of my alll time favorite AD&D adventures was S3 Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, which introduced sci-fi RPG adventures, and eventually led to TSR's other sci-fi game, Gamma World. Loviing this look back at the golden years of RPGs. Keep them coming, guys! How about some Steve Jackson games, like Car Wars, or TSR's Boot Hill?

    • @NerdOutWithMe
      @NerdOutWithMe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Glad you're enjoying the look back, Herb! Def can do some Steve Jackson stuff. We are both fans.

Gamma World was WILD. The mutation rules were pretty insane. At this point it's gone through so many versions, though, it's hard to know where to begin.

My friends and I played the crap out of this game for a few months when it came out in the 80’s. The game was fun and easy to learn. I’m glad Drive Thru RPG has printable and pdf available.

And happily, their print-on-demand quality is pretty good. I have a near complete Star Frontiers collection, and also some reprints. Comparing them side-by-side, the reprints aren't bad at all!

I never understood the reasoning for the ship deck layouts to be "rocket style" as opposed to horizontally.
