For a future iteration you should add some nozzles to the pipe on top to increase spray surface area and oxidize faster. Maybe even a grid of pipes for more spraying spots too. Keep up the amazing work! Get projects done! Stay awesome
FYI, assuming there's enough organic mater to feed on, if the bacteria don't have enough oxygen, they will start to break down NO3 to oxygen and nitrogen gass, where nitrogen would be lost to the atmosphere (this is actually exactly what we do when treating waste water), so if the goal is to collect nitrogen, ideally the bacteria should have plenty of oxygen and never feel the need to search for alternative sources of oxygen
Another thing to remember is that nitrifying bacteria like the ones in wastewater treatment plants are usually autotrophic meaning they need bicarbonates as their carbon source. If you stabilized the pH with let's say sodium hydroxide the bacteria still wouldn't grow because they'd run out of carbon to make more of themselves
@@stickerbeat Yep, in fish tanks we buffer with sodium or calcium bicarbonate, or aragonite which is a species of calcium carbonate. Reef tank keepers will even add liquid carbon sources like vodka, vinegar, or more formulated products to feed the bacteria and then use a protein skimmer to remove the bacteria directly from solution as a de-nitrification method.
Cody this is probably my favorite of your experiments that you have done so far as it directly relates to my work selling aquarium fish. We would probably call what you've created a trickle tower in the industry, and that is the type of filtration we use to most efficiently oxidize ammonia to nitrates, while a submerged or wet/ dry filter may also offer some anoxic nitrification and produce nitrogen gas with different species of bacteria. I'm really interested in using something like this to explain the denitrification process to my customers (and even some of my coworkers!) who seem to believe it is some mystical process that requires praying to the bacteria gods and sleeping with aquarium gravel under your pillow. A few notes from experience: nitrosomonas and nitrobacter species will generally operate and live within the liquid temperature range of water, they are able to go down to 0C and up to 100C without the whole population dying. They do operate best in the range of 72-86F (sorry for mixing units) with activity increasing with temperature up to the upper 80s where they will drop off slightly. You are also experiencing what many fish tank keepers experience after they have not regularly cleaned their tank of fish waste, the organic acids produced are buffering your pH down and lowering the efficacy of your bacteria's chemical reactions. In fish tanks we would prescribe regular water changes with KH buffered water, usually using sodium or calcium bicarbonate as the buffering agent but sometimes aragonite is also used in the form of "crushed coral" products. The crushed chalk at the end is a very similar idea. This video has given me a lot to think about re: the nitrogen cycle process...
One of the old-school ways to get useful nitrates is to spray urine on a loose pile of straw. If done correctly, the surface area of the straw pile would host bacteria and evaporate the water and form nitrate crystals. These crystals could be collected by gently shaking. Further processing is needed for making gun powder. My understanding is that one of the scandinavian countrie's king required subjects to pay tax partially in saltpeter so this sort of operation was going on somewhere on every farm.
A long time ago he actually did exactly that in a video, and if I recall correctly he took the nitrate crystals and made gunpowder from them. Dude is a legend
Cody did exactly that, made actual powder from it and hand loaded a single rifle shell with it, so of course YT took the video down. This video is about the closest you can get to the original source material without being censored
Hi Cody, I'm working on a selective breeding project involving Triops Cancriformis. From everything i'm learning about them in terms of their radiation resistance, rapid life cycle, storable eggs, adaptability to different oxygen levels and extremely easy care I reckon they'd be ideal for a martian aquaponics setup. They aren't palatable but they are edible and if you were to keep them in low temperatures post hatching say 3-10C, then they live much longer and grow considerably larger too.

What about using pot ash instead of chalk to raise the pH? I put the ash from my smoker into my compost pile (along with all my pee). It produces compost very quickly with virtually no work (I never turn it) and no smell. And most importantly the plants love it!
Potassium carbonate could certainly be used, infact the charcoal contained some, but it has the potential to raise the ph too much. With calcium carbonate I really can't add too much, it's more of a set it and forget it. I could always add some potassium carbonate to the liquid and precipitate calcium carbonate leaving potassium nitrate in solution.

This is great! The old gunpowder from urine -video is still one of my favorite side projects. So glad to see the urine saga continuing - within TH-cams guidelines 🤣
nope, the maths are correct. Might be easier to understand if youd calculate backwards, 1000 ml with in it 100 ml of other stuff, devide by 100, every ten ml has one ml of other stuff, 10 to 1, 1/10
He said “1 to 10 dilution” meaning going from a unit volume to a final diluted volume 10 times as big as the original amount. He didn’t mean 1:10 pee to water. It’s 1:10 pee to total solution.
I initially thought the same thing too, but Cody is correct here. In laboratory settings, when someone says they are making a "10 to 1 dilution" and bringing it up to 100 ml, they often mean they are creating a final volume that has the equivalent dilution effect, not strictly adding 10 times the sample volume in water. By diluting the 10 ml sample to 100 ml total, the concentration is effectively reduced by a factor of 10, which is often referred to as a "10-fold dilution" or a "1:10 dilution."
Dear Cody I have some suggestions for improving your bio-reactor system. 1.) Improve top dispertion system, to make fine mist instead of large drops, that will cover surfaces a lot more evenly. Like this, U have just a few percent of activated carbon with active bacterial cultrue. If U change to fine mist, FULL VOLUME of top barel will be active. 2.) Air Inlet to bottom tank can be Oxigen enriched by Oxigen paramagnetism. - Enriching system can be build just by layering Steel plates with magnet and 2-5 layerrs of aluminium mesh. Oxigen near alumiunium mesh, wil be preferencialy atracted by extending magnetic field. Saturated steel plates disipate magnetic field thru aluminium mesh AND guide Oxigen enriched air to your pump inlet. 3.) Temperature is also very significant variable. Make a small volume Experiment with Your bacterial cultre. Where (temperature) Perform the best. Try my improvements in video PLS if U can. ;) 10:25 Reasons why geniuses reprodusces so rarely. :D
at the end I see you take the bacteria from your fish tank filter in order to have it colonize this new setup. How did you originally get this type of bacteria that oxidizes urea into nitrates? Is it naturally present on the charcoal and grows naturally when fed with waste or did you have to introduce it yourself from another source?
If anyone is confused, the title of the video used to be "I am the fish." It was changed, and now that title is being used for a patron only version of this video.
Don't screw up your channel or anything but I'd be willing to bet theres a core base of fans like me that would enioy a weekly (or more) half hour podcast/stream to keep up with you! It would be fun to ask some questions and such!
Just be careful getting that stuff on your clothing (especially boots) if you are ever wearing it on a plane. I have a pair of workboots I wore during a mine tour in the mud around the blasting face that I can't bring on planes anymore because the nitrates set off the swab tests.
I love the waste recycling stuff. I cant recall if you have ever touched on microbial fuel cells. There is a paper discussing a wireless transmitter powered by a foot pump and waste products that you may have heard or read that was absolutely fascinating to imagine and speculate on. It would be interesting to see a future where we ourselves can create some form of usable energy just by using our byproducts.
Honestly if people who own septic tanks could offset their urine and grey water going to the septic tank this could possibly save people a lot of money and have a liquid nitrogen source to use instead of chemical fertilizers. I think this is pretty darn amazing!

11:00 re: gunpowder, it's known that in the period of resistance to the Japanese in WWII, Chinese villages built latrines that harvested urine into bomb making materials. Oddly enough, those were only the third worst bomb used against Japan.
Nice to see Cody is maintaining his chaotic neutral alignment nicely.
That’s the coolest gamer bucket I’ve ever seen!
I'm glad to see you back on the Urine science again!! Haha!!
(The reason he blew up, turning urine into gun powder.)
Also, I'm very happy to hear you had a little vacation time! Much Love Cody!
The only signature on my open sauce badge, the only one I wanted. So happy to have met you and love all that you do.
I hope when ww3 comes along, and I’m wandering the wasteland I happen to come across chicken hole base
I wouldn’t get within 20 miles of Cody in an apocalypse
Thanks for sharing and preserving knowledge for others this channel has loads of information
In order to learn how to defeat The Fish, one must learn to become The Fish. Empty your mind Cody.
You Are The Fish
Hey Cody. I don't have time to watch videos often these days (with the family and so on). Just wanted to say that I'm glad you're still around and seem to be doing well!
Ill be sure to tune in more often. Love your content brother. You're one of the main reasons I pursued engineering, biochemistry and toxicology.
Hope you have an awesome holiday season!
What an absolutely unhinged video showcasing your piss fountain. I love it, never change cody
Iam happy when Cody load up a new video. props
To be fair, he is THE fish.
Oh.. are we doing ..hrrm.. *that*, again, are we? Cause I missed those videos. They were peak TH-cam. Always great to see a new Cody experiment.
the _digester_ has a nice ring to it.
Hello Cody. Always happy to see a new video notification.
This is great! The old gunpowder from urine -video is still one of my favorite side projects. So glad to see the urine saga continuing - within TH-cams guidelines 🤣
That is the sort of reactor I planned to build, so perfect you protyped for me! I will indeed be making one now!
Thanks for showing the making of it!
I love this video and love your content, please keep these going as long as possible!
Wouldn't 100ml and 900ml make a 9 to 1 dilution? It should be 1 in 10, but 9:1.
ye, i was thinking he would go to 110 since he said 10 to 1, so it should be 9 to 1.
nope, the maths are correct.
@@Troublesomeadam The tenfold dilution, is a good word for it, it has 10 units, with 1 sample and 9 dilutant. but it's still 1 to 9 dilution :D
LOOK AT ME. I AM THE FISH NOW
Awesome content Cody! Hope you are in great health and even greater spirits!
at the end I see you take the bacteria from your fish tank filter in order to have it colonize this new setup. How did you originally get this type of bacteria that oxidizes urea into nitrates? Is it naturally present on the charcoal and grows naturally when fed with waste or did you have to introduce it yourself from another source?
I really appreciate the "b-roll" build at the end of the video.
😊
At 4:25 my auditory dyslexia flared up and i thought Cody said "lets go taste it". With how extreme that man is, i had to do a double take.
"It's a wonder that I'm still single." Best line I've heard on YT this year.
The chemist, living off the land! 👍
If anyone is confused, the title of the video used to be "I am the fish." It was changed, and now that title is being used for a patron only version of this video.
If you leave the urine in the sun it grows in amonia content. Colonial Americans used to do that with horse urine to whiten the mens clothes.
Yep, decomposing the urea into ammonia which forms ammonium hydroxide, a pretty decent all purpose cleaner.
"Chamber lye"- as seen on Townsends!
@@Pygar2 I'll have to look for that one. Townsend's are a good pairing with Cody's content. 🍀
@@erinmac4750 FWIW the "Maggie" woman was enacting as a laundress.
@@Pygar2 are you telling me there's a spinoff of TURN: Washington's Spies? That was one of the best mini series I've ever seen
just the best science channel outthere
8:45 bro who hired this Sommelier?
Don't screw up your channel or anything but I'd be willing to bet theres a core base of fans like me that would enioy a weekly (or more) half hour podcast/stream to keep up with you! It would be fun to ask some questions and such!
Just be careful getting that stuff on your clothing (especially boots) if you are ever wearing it on a plane.
I have a pair of workboots I wore during a mine tour in the mud around the blasting face that I can't bring on planes anymore because the nitrates set off the swab tests.
Pouring a full gallon, wow.. You living life good brother..
6:30 how is it a 10:1 ratio if you added 90ml to 10ml? wouldn't that be 9:1?
Shhh
if you look at the scale carefully, he actually filled it to 109g, so he added roughly 100ml.
But you're correct, what he said was wrong
It would be a one in ten solution as it's one part of the total ten
Oh wow you got him. He better fold the channel up.
The channel, and Cody, has come so far from the old days of 5 gallon buckets and solar evaporation 😉 👍
"it's a wonder I'm still single!" rofl
I love the waste recycling stuff. I cant recall if you have ever touched on microbial fuel cells. There is a paper discussing a wireless transmitter powered by a foot pump and waste products that you may have heard or read that was absolutely fascinating to imagine and speculate on. It would be interesting to see a future where we ourselves can create some form of usable energy just by using our byproducts.
I kept thinking he was gonna take a sip
Thank you for being curious and sharing these experiments with us
Honestly if people who own septic tanks could offset their urine and grey water going to the septic tank this could possibly save people a lot of money and have a liquid nitrogen source to use instead of chemical fertilizers. I think this is pretty darn amazing!
I mean you can collect the urine and use it as is.
I used it in my garden, worked quite well.
Never figured that I would ever enjoy watching someone experiment with their own urine.
NileRed's a bit famous for it. I recommend Hyperspace Pirate's video "Refrigeration from Pee" where he makes ammonium nitrate from urine and tries to use it to keep a can of soda cool.
