I agree. Some of these allocated bottles, I can't get. I have had some great bottles and some not worth the money. I, myself started last year to find the best off the shelf bottles at reasonable costs. As for bad bottles, there are plenty. However Jim Beam white label or even Wild Turkey (80 proof) are not the best for slipping but great for mixing at their price points.

Great idea for a video. Would love to see you do other distilleries such as Heaven Hill, Makers Mark, Four Roses, etc. I have not had to top bottles of any of these, but agree with the best shelfers in all four. I had a sample of the Statesman in a bourbon tasting last month and did not care for it. Tasted like chewing on a piece of banana taffy.

Sadly, I loved Four Roses Small Batch. Last bottle I tried, was so horrible I couldn't believe it. It tasted like ethanol or Chemically. Disappointed was an understatement.

I hear a lot of folks absolutely hate four roses. Don't know if it's something that hits certain people's palates wrong or they have some bad quality control. I think most their stuff is pretty good but a little flat.

So I was digging into the SLB video archives recently to decide my next bourbon purchase. Comparing the old vids with current ones, it's nice to have the dynamic duo in front of the camera--a lot more conversational and you guys complement each other well. Kurt was a wealth of info with the old vids but there wasn't really an entertainment factor, and Trent seemed to be a reluctant participant when he first started, but you boys really put together a good show now and look comfortable doing them now. Great job.

Bourbon is so crazy to me. For me Benchmark Bonded might just be the best $20 bottle I've ever had. That stuff is sensational and has killed me in blinds before with how good it was. Wild how different everyone's palettes are.
For me, my distillery of choice would be Wild Turkey with my favorite being Kentucky Spirit, shelf bottle is 101 > RareBreed and worst is my RR Single Barrel store pick. (But I adore RR10)

My Baker's 7 is 8 years, 10 months, so they're often close in age. I love both Knob Creek and Baker's. I really like the KC12. I've never actually tried the Beam white label. I love the OF 1910 and 1920. I'm clearly a shelf-bottle guy. 😂 And Rare Breed, too. You guys just nailed all my favorite shelf bourbons.

Over the 4th of July weekend I bought what is my favorite bottle of bourbon, yet. Clyde May's Special Reserve. 60 bucks here in Michigan. I love the Buffalo Trace products and I love your videos! My daily drinker is Buffalo Trace, and we can get it regularly in Oregon at about $29 for a 1L bottle. We can also find Eagle Rare pretty regularly on the shelves out here too for around $39 for the 750ml bottle. Good luck finding much Weller or Blanton's out here but when you do find it the prices are reasonable as the state of Oregon regulates the retail prices.

    Great video gents!
I’d have the similar dilemma choosing between 1910 and 1920-they’re both great, just for different reasons. I’m with Kurt though-1910 edges past 1920, for me.
That said, I’m with Trenton when choosing between Eagle Rare and Buffalo Trace. Perhaps I need to let it breathe a little more but the first couple times I had a pour, it had a bitterness I wasn’t fond of, and the BT had all the flavors I liked without the bitterness…could’ve just been a bad day-who knows
I recently acquired a bottle of Col Taylor small batch and it’s very tasty, but I *rarely* see it when I’m out and about, so it’s hard for me to like it too much because I know when it’s gone, I may not find another for awhile.

    • @JCG-lb9gr
      @JCG-lb9gr ปีที่แล้ว

I think they got it right. For me it's not close personally but I can see why people would prefer the sweetness level of a 1910 but 1920 is a higher proof point at basically the same price point more well balanced more versatile etc. I think it's just about the best shelf bourbon you can buy for 55-65 dollars personally.

Here in Alberta, Canada 7 of those 12 bottles are unobtanium, OF 1920 is 80-90, Rare Breed is 75-80. Knob Creek 9 and Wild Turkey 101 are usually 40-45 sometimes under 40. White Label is around 30, cheaper on sale. A few times a year I can find Knob Creek 9 on sale for 35 and Buffalo Trace for 28, usually pick up a couple when the sale hits. Most Bourbons you guys class in the 20-30 dollar range are in the 40-60 range locally. Most prices have increased 10-20% in recent times.

Eh Taylor over Eagle rare....if you consider it a shelf pick?
OHLQ had a Russell's barrel proof "store pick", if you want to call it that, and it is excellent

I liked the Wild Turkey Longbranch flavor but there was not enough of the flavor. I'd like to see a Longbranch in a higher proof and then compare them. Great show!! TonyB

BEAM--White label Beam is a GREAT mixer.
OLD FORESTER--OF 1910 is a great shelf bottle, the 1920 is awesome, as well.
WILD TURKEY--Never had the WT Rare Breed, but the 101 is a great value!
BUFFALO TRACE--Eagle Rare is very good, but I want to try the Stagg.

For Old Forester since I have never tried Birthday I would consider the blue and green label single barrels. They are very good.

Nice comparison! Could maybe expand it to a part II with the next 4 largest distilleries. I'd particularly be curious about the Heaven Hill family, as many of my favorites come from them.
I haven't had any of the top selections from the distilleries you chose, but of them I pretty much agree with what you have except for Old Forester. I do like the Statesman, and all the varieties. Some are better than others so while I can't choose which one would be my least favorite, it's still something I'd drink handily. Jim Beam gives me a special kind of shiver down my back, and not a good one. I had the WORST hangover of my entire life from that stuff. So bad it put me off all bourbon for 15-20 years. Now that I've discovered the pleasures of what a good bourbon is, I still won't drink it!

This was another great video! I agree that the Benchmark Bonded is not good. It's the first Buffalo trace product I've tried, and I'm scared to buy any Benchmark label again. I'm even shying away from Buffalo Trace products when at the store, should I not go off of this first impression of the brand?

Try one of the other ones. The standard Benchmark (No. 8) isn't bad at all, especially for the price. Just picked up a bottle at Meijer's for $10.

The Benchmark thing is interesting because I have seen multiple reviews with all sorts of orders on them. I do not think any other review I have seen had Bonded last.

Is the regular benchmark not worth buying? I live in Arkansas and we have zero buffalo trace products other than regular no 8 benchmark and ancient age. I’ve put off buying it because no one ever talks about it

My favorites from Jim Beam are the Old Grand-Dads, with the 114 costing less than the Knob Creeks. A lot of people like the Wild Turkey 101 or higher priced Rare Breed.

I think my favorite distillery (besides No. 10 which is in Owensboro, my home town) is Heaven Hill. I even tried the J.W. Dant 100 proofer you had on in a video and it's not bad for a low end/mixer. I will always like Maker's and WT, as well. Those are just the basic Kentucky elixirs. But I agree the WT 80 is not great.

I highly recommend you getting your hands on some of the offerings from Balcones. Great stuff with some unique flavour profiles that I think you will both enjoy. Great episode and for me in Australia I can't go past the WT 101 for bang for buck value.
