Have to admit, while we are very honest compared to some other cultures, a large part is probably indeed because we just like to complain. About everything. :p

Accurate translation of the final part of the video:
"I want to thank you for the good memories that I have had in the Netherlands.
I am so thankful that I was allowed to get to know you and learn from you.
I, I love you, and, and I hope that I... I hope that I am permitted to come back, in a while.
And, I, I am really thankful for your examples and that I, and that I was allowed to learn a lot about not just the Netherlands, but the Dutchmen, because it has created me in many, in many areas in my life. I love you and thanks again."
It has a bit of a formal, "old" ring to it, reminding me of Christian gatherings, especially at the word "geschapen", which is a word used in religion 99% of the time and translates roughly to "created", as in the creations of a god. It's funny to see how different sentence structures, use of words and things like that affect speech when speaking a less familiar language, like when he asked for permission to come back. :p

I worked in Amsterdam with an Irish girl who had to see a doctor because of back problems. She came back very irate. He told her that her back hurt because she was fat.
Truth be told, she had put on a bit of weight and English was not the doctor's first language. But still I can see how she would have been put of by the directness.

In the late 50s there was a Dutch comedian (can anybody suggest his name?) who broadcast on Hilversum radio (RIP) and he addressed Dutch stereotypes. I remember one thing he discussed: "Why do Dutch people leave curtains open when it's dark outside?" So neighbours can see in at how clean and tidy their house is". From my observation of my Dutch aunts, uncles, cousins and their kids - IT'S TRUE! Completely unlike my British home.
I also remember dad, when I was about 6, showing me how haring should be eaten: he held it by its tail, twirled it around to loosen the bones, dangled it into his oesophagus, tightened the throat, and pulled out the bones. The problem I have with that memory is that I was young, and dad would also perform magic tricks that would convince a kid of that age. I wonder if the herring demonstration was a trick. Sadly, I can no longer ask.

Glad to hear you enjoyed your time in the Netherlands! You speak Dutch very well, consider me impressed! :)
The thing with the stairs is mostly in the really old buildings though (from before WWII). Modern buildings have 'normal' stairs
And true, if you want to know a honest opinion, ask a Dutchie. The directness is more clear in the Holland area than the 'provinces', in my experience. In general, people from Amsterdam will just speak their mind, which I love, whilst people near the German and Belgian borders tend to be a bit more cautious with that.
With Dutch people being everywhere, I thought you would mean physically... which is too true XD Went on holiday in France, visited some tiny little village and went to the bakery to get some lunch... The cashier was Dutch... Another holiday, middle of nowhere on some mountain in Scotland. No one there! Oh, some people are approaching us... Dutch. Celebrated new years in another tiny village in Wales. Called my parents to wish them a happy new year, and heard a group of people behind me repeat after me 'gelukkig nieuwjaar!' Seriously?! It is such a tiny nation, why are we everywhere?!
