I'm not a musician, I always loved this intro so i looked at covers and almost no one includes those high hat hits which is one of my favorite parts. really well done
Im trying to do this on a drum machine using step sequence but its not working out. That beginning pattern ends before the last closed high hat in 4/4.
In this video, there is just the one condenser under the ride. But I've started using two condensers (both Rode NT1-As), one under the ride like you pointed out, and another under the rack tom. I'm experimenting with different placements to avoid phase issues. I've also started using an SM-57 to mic the top side of the snare. You can see an example of this in my Death Cab for Cutie - Summer Skin Short Groove (th-cam.com/video/lURquCjSZAY/w-d-xo.html) I don't use any overheads because I want to be able to record quickly, and leaving the condensers set up in the positions I currently have them in makes the most sense in my small room. When I do overheads, I've always been a fan of recorderman. Works best in the small, very not optimized home studio spaces I generally find myself playing in :)
I've always heard it talked about as a hemiola, which this article describes as a specific type of polyrhythm: www.electronicdrumadvisor.com/polyrhythms-syncopation-hemiola/. Something I'd love to study more.
@@tempoleaguedrums the only part I don’t get is when to hit the hi-hat with the left hand. I got lazy and demotivated through the years but this intro is one of the coolest imo I might take the time to figure that out:)
Wow! This is probably the best explanation video to that intro, I've ever seen. Great job!!
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful.
I tried to play this by ear for the longest time, but this makes it way easier. Thanks!
🙌🏼

Great attention to detail! I remember the same thing when I was looking for covers, really cool that you picked up on that
I don't even play drums, but this intro vid is excellent! Definitely adding this one to my arsenal of air drum songs.
I can just see it now, you're really gonna go to town. It's an honor to be a small part of that :)
Yea man, this video got me to learn it! Amazing work.
Thanks, man!

The first note, that first tom, happens on the & of 4. Do you have it programmed that way?
Really great breakdown of the intro. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Cool
😎
Thank you so much man! Was hard to understand what the hell was going on in that first part.
Happy to help! Thanks for checking out the channel.
Awesome stuff man!!!!
Thank you! 🙏🏻
Damn dude nice
Thank you much!
Anyone have a good video of Phoenix's drummer playing this live?

Yea nice, that's a good one.
What is your mic set up? I see one condenser mic underneath the ride and any overheads?

Is this a polyrhythm?
I think it's a polymetric pattern 🤔

@@tempoleaguedrums oh yeah indeed ! I didn't know that term
do you have a notation for this song or at least the part you teach?
You bet, here you go: gscribe.com/share/KkoBHPqNFLsiFkiW9. I've also linked to it in the description.
@@tempoleaguedrums Thank you very much!
@@tempoleaguedrums i think theres a mistake in the 7th bar of the notation, could it be? i think theres theres two tom notes more
@@Soda_F1 Nice catch, here is the updated version: gscribe.com/share/akHSv4UBa6tmLfj86
It sounded complicated to me at first, but it's actually quite simple, great explanation
Thanks! Yea when you break it down it’s really not too bad.
I’ve been playing for more than 10 years but…. Slap me hard and call me Sally if I know wtf is happening here
You got this, just take it nice and slow :)
