The ancient kata shows a powerful spirit, which uses the hanamichi and energical poses, there is a fraction of second in the transition from red to white where Fukusuke's head movement was so clean and coordinated with the music that gave me goosebumps... AMAZING!
Both are equally marvelous and should go on! I believe, differences are not about something being or not being better, they are about richness of a source material that can be interpreted in varrious ways. I think that why choose when we can have all? Frankly speaking, Tamasaburo's version was the first I saw and was the reason I became interested in Kabuki theatre, so for me it will always be the closest to heart and my favourite, but it doesn't keep me from exploring others' interpretations and older versions. On contrary, I find them amazing. This diversity showed me how rich this dance's tradition is.
I think every piece deserves a place in the repertoire, these are priceless, too much beauty in all to lose…I understand we need to make room for new traditions,, but we can learn so much from what came before…bravo, everyone! I love it all…thank you…
I think Tamasaburo's Sagi Musume and Ennosuke's Yoshitsune are two of the best examples of Kabuki that has adapted itself to modern times without loosing the character of the original work or feeling artificial or cheesy. However the ending of the Narikomaya version has a very different feeling to the ending of Tamasaburo's, so it would be a great loss if it were to stop being taught and performed. Seeing this perfomance by Fukusuke was also a bit sad, since he can no longer perform roles like these. His dance has a very different energy than Tamasaburo's, and I wish he were well enough to continue with physically demanding roles like this. Do you know if there is a recording of Utaemon performing this dance? Even in that photograph you can feel his powerful presence. If in pictures and videos his emotions still come across so strongly, I can only imagine what it would have been like to see him perform in the flesh!
Also I recently noticed that the ushigomepansubchannel yotube channel has vanished without a trace! This is very unfortunate as a lot of old VHS recordings of Kabuki performances and related media that were on that channel can no longer be accessed. I wish Shochiku would provide better options form watching their archive footage if they are going to so aggressively copyright strike everything on TH-cam :(
This is Nagauta, a style of traditional Japanese music from the Edo period which is integral to kabuki. I have a video explaining various types of kabuki music which you might enjoy: th-cam.com/video/z---5OFlXjA/w-d-xo.html
love that there's still recent video essays like this diving into such a niche tradition
the tradition isn't niche in japan, but it's lovely to have such a thoughtful channel giving us english-speakers a window into this beautiful world
All versions are exquisitely unique.
All versions should be enshrined.
The beauty of each version and its actors are sublime.

Thank you very much for introducing the beautiful older version. I have Tamasaburo on a dvd and watched it many times.

I'm sure that dance scene from the movie "memoirs of a Geisha" was inspired by this dance!!!! The dance scene withe white kimono in the snow
The Narikomaya is so beautiful, I like it better. Both versions should co-exist.
I love Tamasaburo's version but this is excellent as well.
There will be three versions of the dance.
Is this what inspired sayuri’s dance in the memoirs of a geisha?
cool stuff
anyone recommends something related? a channel perhaps
AskShogo does general japanese traditional culture with a focus on Iado, try that. I also like deepjapan the last samurai.
