Fun facts about your combat boots - the effect of the brown undertones peaking through the black leather is called "tea core" in certain fashion circles, first used by Japanese vintage collectors. The "tea" part comes from the Japanese word for "tea" ("ocha") is sometimes used as the word for the color brown and the "core" part as in the core of the leather. Because of cost cutting the leather isn't dyed all the way through. Ironically what was cost cutting way back then is these days something certain leather tanneries spend a lot of time and resources on creating leathers that wears like your combat boots and it's now considered a premium feature.
Sorry, geeky rant over. I really like your combat boots though - I didn't know that examples from that era had tea core leathers so I'm definitely gonna look them up. I also agree about OG-107/507 - those pants are amazing in comfort, utility and versatile for so many different outfits no matter what your style is.

There's some jeans brands (such as One Piece of Rock) that intentionally make sure that their jeans are imperfect in many subtle ways in terms of stitching and fabrics so that they are as close as a reproduction of vintage Levi's jeans that you can get, with the irony being that you can have objectively better jeans in terms of durability and finishing for much less. It's all pretty wild indeed.

By not shipping worldwide you'd be sacrificing the number 1 goal of a project to satisfy something lesser.

Hmmm, I'd like to hear more about your stance on wool vs. leather. I was always under the impression that wool is somewhat more humane and less destructive than leather.
Look at brands like Stella McCartney -- animal rights activist who doesn't use any leather but often uses silk and wool fabrics.
In any case, I think it's great how you've been transitioning to a more sustainable lifestyle. Keep it up!
Completely agree with what you are saying. There are definitely sources of wool that are ethical, many of them. You are still taking from animals, but that ethical question has to be approached by you individually. My main concern is either from merino wool (issues with skin shearing) and wool that is one-and-done for the meat industry. For me, wool is ok (don't know anything about silk haha) as long as you know where it's from! The performance is greater than it's synthetic counterparts, but I certainly need to get more educated on the topic before I can take a strong stance. As long as I don't know and don't absolutely need a wool sweater to protect me for the cold, may as well not rely on it.
Also, yeah Stella is badass. Clothes aren't for me but all of her values and projects supporting others are killer.

So much respect for your consideration of the ethical issues associated with certain materials - this is something we need more of in fashion as even socially conscious brands/designers still use fabrics like wool and leather
Hey Avery, you are such a huge inspiration to me. You inspired me to create my own clothes and I have been working on a few designs this past month . Hearing about your brand and how environmentally sustainable you want it to be motivates me to want to do the same when I choose a manufacturer or look for materials . vegan leather is less sustainable than real leather so keep that in mind
Eliza Day not all vegan leather. Pvc yes. People are coming up with some really cool alternatives ex: mushroom leather, pineapple leather etc. Before we know it there will be many vegan leather option that surpass animals skins in quality, environmental impact, and appearance.
@@lindseybeck5176 great points. Also, definitely a strong factor that we need to keep in mind, Eliza. The only things I would argue is pollution, land use, etc. problems with the livestock industry as well as ethics. Although the latter is something that you need to decided for yourself. And Lindsey, with all of the food-waste leathers, I think it's super important to support those companies that way we move towards as you said many more & better options.

cotton farming alone also has a very negative effect on the environment (e.g. Aral Sea; a lake in Uzbekistan which has declined to just 10% of it‘s original size due to cotton farming, and the people have to suffer now)

Such an insane case that really isn’t shared much- like jeans woooo. With the dyeing washing and lack of cutting against the grain (waste of fabric). It’s wild.

I get breeding sheep to produce more skin = more wool is extremely unethical (diseases, skin conditions etc). with regular, modern sheep, the wool must be harvested or the sheep's gonna suffer a heat stroke lol. and it's like going to the barber's. the wool is not plucked off in a painful manner or anything
From what I've seen/read, they castrate the lambs with no anaesthetic (as government regulations allow) and cut their skin to prevent some kind of virus. Also unless it's a very small farm with one farmer who looks after his sheep - on a wide scale they have to cut many sheep very quickly, which results in them being careless and cutting their skin and all of that jazz. Just type in wool industry exposed or something onto TH-cam. But you're right, we bread them like that so I think we have to cut them now :/
Really great discussion all. And I must admit I need to do more research before making a bold claim regarding the entire fiber category. Wool is great for water wicking, breathability, decomposition, etc. The hard part and expensive part is getting the wool from an ethical source, or knowing where your wool comes from. What we should avoid is the skin sheering taking place in much of the merino market and sheering that is just a small plus in the meat industry. And yeah the whole having to sheer them is sort of our the window bc its our fault lmao.

-As for the green Army pants, I wore both types starting in 1979, the older 100% cotton were worn starched & pressed by the Soldiers, the later polyester needed ironing say once in a while to look like the previous ones. The boots, once the soles wore down, could be resoled with Vibram and worn another 10 years of harsh daily work. Eventually though the leather would crack and a second resole was not worth the cost. As for wool, I am a big believer in the near magical properties of this fabric. I know something about raising sheep and do not find it morally objectionable.

what kind of material would you use for knitwear if you couldn't use primarily wool for that big, thick, heavy potatosack knit look?
Hreat question and honestly not 100% sure for that big burlap boy. I know you can create some crazy rich textures with cottom + synthetic blends like polymide. Acrylic could be a big replacer too (p horrible to make but lasts the longest). Although it would be a bit less structured.

(although, of course, if one could succeed in all of these things whilst also selling clothing). I am greatly interested in how one's morals in clothing have a significant effect beyond the tip of the iceberg.
