      I don't like D&D dragons. Too many, too similar, too angsty. Also zombies are boring for the same reasons.

    Yesssss!! So many great TTRPG folk in this list, INCLUDING a bunch that get overlooked, and I feel so honoured to be included ✨️

      It’s seriously SO HARD 😂 Trying to shorten my list was brutal, so I’m sure there will be a part 2 some day!

      Angry and Justin Alexander were definitely the first two DM advice sources for me! I know Angry isn’t for everyone but I agree, his stuff is excellent!

    The channel I always suggest new players look up is Web DM.
    D&D content online falls into two camps.
    1. Two guys sitting side by side, facing the camera, and reading player options and class features directly from the books.
    2. One or more people explaining or having a back and forth discussion about running games, different styles of play, and highlighting useful but forgotten tools and rules subsystems from older game editions or completely different games.
    The second type of content is always going to be more useful. Web DM specialized in videos that covered infinitely useful tools and ideas that new players will simply never find if they stick to just reading the phb and the occasional splat book. They don't post regularly to youtube anymore, so the algorithm is less likely to allow new viewers to find them. About two years ago, they shifted focus to direct engagement with viewers through Patreon, finishing their excellent Wilderness Exploration book titled Weird Wastelands, and the hundreds of videos on their channel covered all the general topics their lead DM Jim Davis felt he could cover without getting prompts directly from their Patreon followers.

    Reading Justin's book now. Well, not right now, but... It's a great time for finding content in our hobby. I just don't have enough *time* ! I like all the recommendations I already know and follow, and I'll check the others out. Some of the smaller ones I like now are Cantrips Media, Corkboards & Curiosities, DianaOfTheRose, DM Timothy, Dungeon Damsel (mostly Shadowdark), Feywild Fiend, Deficient Master, DM Tales, Hack the Dungeon, The Ugly Goblin, Sensei Suplex, and The Grungeon Master. Too many channels, too little time!

      Right? There’s so much great info out there! And thanks for the recs, there’s a few on there I haven’t came across yet so I’ll have to go check their channels out! 😊

    I'm surprised Matthew Colville's "Running the Game" series isn't on the list. If you haven't seen it already, I highly recommend it. Personally, I find it one of the best (if not, "the best") advice for new GMs.
    All in all tho, great list. I'm gonna go check out a few of these I haven't yet discovered.
    Keep up the great work! 😊

      Yeah! Colville's "Running the Game" is fantastic! I actually didn't include it because I felt like when I started it was the single most unanimously recommended source and I thought I'd take the chance to highlight some other really great channels! 😊 I also wanted a mix of not just "how-tos" but also sources that talk more about non-RAW ideas, an AP that isn't as time-consuming and therefore as overwhelming as Critical role, etc. 😂

    Another good podcast with beginner DnD players is Tales of the Stinky Dragon. Highly recommend, it's my go to thing to show podcast lovers who are DnD curious

    Not sure I've ever used a dragon... Killed a dracolich with a folding boat once but never used a dragon as a GM they are just a bit meh, I'd rather use an owlbear or a landshark - they are much more flavourful and actually D&D from the early days of using whatever weird toys you had at the table and giving them stats - or so my friend (and great D&D podcaster) James "Monsterman" Holloway tells me. Also I can now tell my ADHD partner that we called it based on the multiple hobbies point in the first video :-)

    • @StephaniePlaysGames
      @StephaniePlaysGames  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The idea of a landshark is TERRIFYING to me 😂 Also one of my friend's loves to just kitbash some monsters and give them stats, so it's good to know it actually has an origin! I've heard of his podcast, I'll have to add it to my playlist this week!
      And I'm most definitely a very obvious ADHDer 😂😂😂 I'm glad I'm in good company! The fact that, as my partner says - "my hobby is collecting more hobbies" - wasn't one of a million dead giveaway in my childhood is always astounding.

    YEAH! All these peeps are awesome! I follow most of them.
    Also: really enjoy the short form. You also didn't have as much vocal fry in this one. It was nice. :D More like this?

    The algorithm brought me to your videos, probably because I Subscribe to all of these other D&D and TTRPG content creators. I'm working my way through watching every single one of your videos and liking and Commenting to hopefully help get you more viewers! I like your takes on things, and I already got a couple of great inspirations I will be taking to my own D&D table. Keep up the hard work!

    I've been playing since 1978 (yes, I'm old). For new DM's, I couldn't disagree more with your Ginny Di selection. She doesn't run games the way most do and tries too hard to emulate Critical Role - a group of professional actors with scripted content. That level of character development and story intertwining might work for someone who does nothing else for a living but not for most DM's that probably have a job and/or family, etc. You don't need to complicate the game to that level for it to be fun.

    • @StephaniePlaysGames
      @StephaniePlaysGames  29 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I disagree with your disagreement 🤷‍♀️ There’s multiple ways to play and enjoy the game and I think everyone should be free to find the style they enjoy best. Ginny is in fact the TH-camr that gave me the most confidence to just start running games in the first place, not to mention the fact that she’s an awesome person to boot.

    • @jonhunt1419
      @jonhunt1419 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @StephaniePlaysGames I'm just saying she is not great for beginners. In time you can incorporate her tips but her play style would be overwhelming at first. That and that most people don't play like that or need to to have fun.

    • @StephaniePlaysGames
      @StephaniePlaysGames  29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jonhunt1419I’m just saying I disagree with that assessment 🤷‍♀️ I think for some people, me included, Ginny’s tips and style of play are much more intuitive and are super beginner friendly. Because I also enjoy a more narrative focused style and that’s why I dived into GMing. Like I said, different strokes for different folks.
