    Tim and the Double Fine team are the best, so many awesome members like Greg Rice (love that you’re working in indies at Sony now!), Camden Stoddard, Justin Bailey, Oliver Franzke, Lee Petty, Raymond Crook, Ben Peck, Matt Hansen, Anna Kipnis, Nathan “Bagel” Stapley, Peter McConnell, etc etc. Everyone named and unnamed thank you so much for your hard work and passion on all your projects. Very hyped for Psychonauts 2!!

    I love that they actually blurred out his fists hitting each other. I know that's what he did, but it looks far more suggestive when it's censored XD haha

      this is a 3 years documentary its normal that people will leave a studio on that time.
      Most artists are hired with contracts for time periods so thats pretty normal in every game, and movie studio, and many times thats cool because new artists will have a fresh mind for the project.

    I am a university student and I got a diploma in computer science. I'm a developer and I'm really interested in the development of video games. For my diploma (3 years ago) I used Unity3d for a small videogame and now I think that I would like to create something new.
    I think Unity3d and other commercial engine are great tools because it is really easy to create cross-platform games with that (also since it is free for me it is easy to start with that). That's why I really don't understand why reinvent the wheel when you can use a modern commercial engine.
    But since I'm still a student I realize I have very limited knowledge, that's why I really would like to know that.
    This documentary is really interesting, although I must admit that I would have liked to see a bit of code.
    Who knows maybe in a few years I'll be there with you to create the next masterpiece.
    Thank you.

      Hey, I'm also a computer science student. And I just want to say that while Unity and other commercial engines are great tools, and are very useful. However, creating a custom engine allows you to have much more control over what you're games can do (It's the same idea as bespoke software). That's all I wanted to add :')

    • @LiefLayer
      @LiefLayer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex Gwyn you are right. What I really don't understand is why don't use a commercial engine for Broken Age.
      I understand why you cannot use it for Skyrim or something like that (mod support is not easy).
      But when I look at Pillars of Eternity (that used a modified version of Unity3d) I see a similar level of complexity.
      Also in this documentary:
      - there was a problem with the engine (for the number of tentacle).
      (with a commercial engine there is no such problem)
      - A lots of time was used to create this new engine.
      (you just need few money for a commercial engine)
      -the creator of this engine was moved to another project.
      (with a commercial engine you can find many programmers already used to that engine... with a custom one you need a really good programmer just to fix bugs on the engine).
      Maybe there is something about Broken Age that was impossible or really difficult with a commercial engine. That is what I really would like to know.
      I made a simple local-multiplayer Battleship game with no engine (just Java Swing) for a University exam... it was really fun, but I'm 100% sure that Unity3d would be easier.

    • @alexgwyn3644
      @alexgwyn3644 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unity3D would be a lot easier. But like you've said before, it may just be that there was something that couldn't be solved using a commercial engine (Guess we'll never know). But I think the most logical explanation would be cost, unity (and I assume other engines as well), have a selection of plans. For Broken Age they would have to use Unity Pro, which at the moment costs $125 per team member, if they had 7 members that would be roughly $10000, a year. Which may not sound like a lot, but that does add up quickly. However if they created their own engine (which they did), They would only need to pay the cost of the development of it, and pay not so much to maintain it. Again this is just a thought, I have no numbers to back this statement up, apart from the Unity Pro numbers.

    I still wonder how part 2 has taken so long to make since they already had the engine ready for the game. Probably the amount of people working on part 2 was less than the amount of people who worked on part 1. Could also be that they had some cash problems which delayed the game.

      Deniz Puolamäki For various reasons, there was a bit of a lull after Act 1 was released before the full team could start working on Act 2. The team size was about the same but it did decrease as Act 2 neared completion. Act 2 is also larger than Act 1.

    How does the gaming industry work in terms of jobs? This is the second person leaving the team for another company. Several others were working freelance on this project. Is it the case that you don't stay at one company for too long?
