'Is that it? am i done?' .... this moment happened halfway through the first season and you would think thats not enough time to bond with a character so much but damn that one line just hits me every time i hear it
Ah. a nice, light-hearted episode to follow up such a sad one. One thing I liked best about Angel, the series, is how they never bothered to wait until the season finale to unleash the most heart-wrenching episodes.
R.I.P. Glenn Quinn! You will always be remembered as part of Angel's heroes and Roseanne's "favorite" son-in-law! No worries, guys! All questions will be answered in the next episode. Prepare for some interesting surprises...
“Is that it? Am I done?” Those final words break me every time. What a line to end on for a character we’ve all grown to love & also for the loss of the actor. 😭
heart breaking, Glenn Quinn was tragically dealing with a number of substance issues during the filming of Season 1 and eventually sadly passed of an accidental ovadose just two years after he left the series. R.I.P ur char will be missed But hear me out, His replacement for me worked out better for the shows char building #DarkAvenger #OurRatsAreLow
That ending line "Is that it? Am I done?" always feels like the actor Glen Quinn talking to the producers of the show which makes it even more sad to me Nobody sees this coming because this was way before Game of Thrones that made killing important characters common place. Some good stuff upcoming in the rest of the season
I cry every time I see this episode. I love your theorizing about how they will move on and what may/may not happen. Can I also say how contagious Mike's laughter is? :D
Glenn Quinn had a drug addition and it impacted his work on Angel. They let him go because of his coming late to work and well the addiction was too much. Not long after this episode. Glenn died of an overdose. He was only I think 32? Back then it was hard and it still hurts. He had so much potential as Doyle. He was great in Roseanne, but Doyle…he was just getting started.
Sadly sometimes people are just beyond help… I wish he could have beaten his demons, I think he would have had a great future ahead of him, his acting skills were great and that he had so much potential.
Two heartbreakers on the bounce, and you thought episode 8 was sad! Doyle became so popular with the fans this was a hammer blow, especially as Cordelia really wanted him now the writers are so cruel. Such a shame for Glen Quinn in his personal life too leading to an ultimate tragedy so sad. The episode was brilliant in its own right The Scourge obviously mirroring the Nazis with their uniforms and racial purity cult. A great, but sad ending for the fans, the video so sad at the end. Angel was such a brilliant show, watching it the time this episode actually went out we were in a state of pure shock and didn't believe it. Doyle always remembered by Buffyverse fans.
@sugardares He was given multiple times chances, ending with an ultimatum, work or drugs. Clean up or die. David Boreanaz would have loved his return. Less so the crew and definitely not the studio as he cost extra money.
But he still wrote him out of the show rather the helping him rehabilitate . Im not saying it is entirely his responsibility (more like the production company’s responsibility) but duty of care for your employees matters. Like, you don’t just abandon your workers because they have issues, you direct them to services or provide them yourself.
Good reaction guys. I also had gotten to really like Doyle and his death hit and still hits hard. Good eye Mike. I had expected "death flags" from Mikey too. Definitely one of the best season one episodes.
I don't think I ever had a conversation with Glenn, but I git to watch hom on set. There were two Glenn's. Sober Glenn was a really good sctor. Not sober Glenn was chronically late and there was at least one time where nearly every chunk of dialog was from a different take. Boreanaz loved him, but he was causing big problems. He was given several chances to clean uo hus act with a final ultimatum. He chose drugs. There was no plan to kill him until he back production into a corner. The first full weeek after he was gone ended with the first afridsy with a pre-noon call time. I remember the crew cheering that fact. I didn't like the overt NAZIs thjng. Doyle technically dies twice. The first mate was played by Glenn's stand in. Fur our on set Christmas party, a crane held the killer light up as the star on the tree. The crew all referred to it as a giant Christmas ornament anyway, so it became one. Ten episodes earlier was the Buffy finale. The Mayor turned ibto a pure demon, which is bigger. The Scourge therefore could not be pure blooded demons. The boat was not a boat. Thus was the basement of a defunct LA newspaper. Two floors is where they film Kate's police station interiors. An earthquake hit during a night boat shhot. The crew reacted slowly, as you expects everything to rock in a boat. Then they remembered, that wasn't a real boat. At that moment, fir the first time in months, both Joss and Ty King (writer of Passion/Jenny's death) had posted to the Posting Board at the same time.
I just now realized Angel's answer to the idea of him drinking demon blood makes no sense. "I wouldn't drink him, he reeks of humanity." My man, vampires feed off literal humans. What are you talking about?
Hmm I mean Angel says don’t you think I don’t smell the humanity in me so he doesn’t want to eat humans because he will be doubled with more humanity by drinking their blood lol
RIP Doyle and Glenn Quinn. In the case of Doyle's death, it wasn't a writing decision, but an issue of personal issues with substance abuse Glenn Quinn was having. In real life, by the time the series finale aired, substance abuse, unfortunately, conquered him.
@@732ReviewCrew To add a little more context, he and David Boreanez had apparently become good friends during filming and the producers were worried that their star actor may end up being influenced into the same substance abuse that claimed Quinn, and as a result he was fired.
Solid reaction and commentary. You are on the mark when you knew who to blame…. Joss Whedon. He always wants to subvert audience expectations and typical story narratives. This was so typical, we just did not know at this time. Most every show has a main character die or leave in the finale or rating sweeps. But not here. Angel killed Ms. Calendar in Episode17. It seemed out of the blue. No one would expect a tearjerker after the last Buffy/Angel cry-a- thon. But not here. Let’s take a super popular Main Lead.. give him a backstory… give him hope with Cordelia… and then let’s kill him. If you have not yet, get use to it. Things can and will happen and rest assured that misery will outweigh happiness.
I remember watching Angel when it was airing and I stopped after this episode - I was so angry. Other than a couple Buffy crossovers, I gave up on the show. At the time, Doyle was my favorite character. I'm glad I revisited the show later and have seen it all, but this was a gut-punch.

It hit hard
Legit still makes me cry after all these years, every single time I watch it. Doyle was truly a hero.

I thought this happened later in the season. RIP Glenn Quinn. Not the last time we will get to see the Angel commercial.

Poor Glenn Quinn. I wish there'd been a way to get him some help for his addictions in time, but unfortunately we lost him too early.

Looking through the newsgroups at the time fans were very intent on bringing him back.
So so so sad.

"He's in the intro, he can't die" - well, JW wanted to put Jesse in the credits of the Buffy pilot so his death would hit harder so....
There are plenty of issues with Joss Whedon's behavior, but it's to his credit that he gave no hint about why Quinn had to be written out of the show.

I am done?
Good eye, Mike.
Doyle 😭😭😭
I would have thrown Cordelia on that device XD
Truly same Doyle such a good character
RIP Glenn

Thanks for the extra background info.
I also thought making the ‘pure demons’ the size and shape of humans was a direct contradiction of Buffy.
Thank you for sharing
@colecharmed You're welcome.
careful what you wish for !

He was only killed because his addictions were costing the production money.
