I am an artist living and working in France. I learned the techniques of the Atelier of the Nineteenth century and now I try to share some of my knowledge with the rest of the world, because I think that beauty still has an important role to play in artistic creation. I do mostly drawing and oil painting, and my goal is always to provide techniques, thoughts and explanations that can be useful to anyone, from beginners to more advanced artists.

As a teacher of art and design, allow me to offer another way of looking at it: in art as well as just about anything else, our reaction to our efforts are directly and critically related to our expectations and secondarily to what we are willing to do to get the outcome we hope for. If you expect mastery of technique at the beginning so you can produce what you see with your mind’s eye then you will be disappointed. If you judge the value of what you have created by it should be rather than how it compares to what you could do two or three paintings before then you will suffer eternally. Rest assured that your struggle is one of the attributes of a creative thinker and maker. We always thing we are not good enough. But put that aside. Keep all your “failed” attempts so you can realize how much you have actually improved. Treat all your paintings as precious at the same time as trivial (I am aware of the irony, it was meant) And Florent, thank you for your wonderful approach and pleasant demeanor and humbleness. Your videos are a joy to watch. Oh and as far as meaning goes. I would distinguish value from meaning. I believe all art is universally valuable but individually meaningful. Keep painting

      @FlorentFargesarts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I agree with you so much "Keep all your “failed” attempts so you can realize how much you have actually improved." Just a clarification, I don't equate value and meaning, as meaning is something subjective and value is intersubjective. Basically, something can have meaning for you as a solo creator but it doesn't have "true" value unless you accept to share it with others and let them find meaning in it as well.

  • @ralphhancock7449

A "waste of time" translates into "a waste of money". I suspect that most struggling artists are concerned with finding "meaning" in order to justify the money they spend on supplies. The art images we create are born into this world only because we created it. It is uniquely one of a kind. That is what modern art valued: originality. But what is valued in the art market is not what is valued by the artist. If they see tons of paintings just like ours, ours isn't going to be purchased - too banal, too unoriginal. It might not be banal or unoriginal to the artist: It is something 'new' to the artist; so, 'valuable'. But the buying public applies different standards.

❤️❤️❤️ for me the time I spend on my art is the purpose of my art. The end product is minimally consequential. The feel of the brush in my hand and the feel of paint being smoothed over the canvas… it brings me joy. My art room is the place I go to decompress. If someone else or even I like what I created is just a bonus; not the intention.

I sold my artworks through my own gallery for many years. I loved talking to my customers . I praised a customer who was a nurse for the contribution she made to society, saying how sometimes I felt what I did was meaningless. " Oh no not at all !" she replied. " Without people like you to bring interest and beauty to my life I could not do my job as a nurse !"
If ever I struggle with the creative process, I think of that.

Iam speechless , all of your topics are away more important than any other technical advice or how to do videos out there , most of artists regardless of what level they are feel that in exact moments just before or after involving in the process of painting ..thats just because real artists are philosophers to some degree , the are artists in first place because they are thinkers , even in thier subconscious mind,, I feel some times petty for people who think too much .. suffering in time they don't create anything..painting is the only escap just in the time doing it ...before or after we have moments of depression..the value of painting or any other art is the process it self ...that's what gives meaning to time , life and us ..that gives value because it teaches as " just do it " what ever the result ...just do your jop ..just take care of your family ..just read and imagine ...the beauty and happiness in the process it self ..not about results ..and definitely depression is not to do anything at all ...thank you for your ability to say what we want to say ..you find the right words for it 🙏🙏🙏

This progress of creation make me realize it directly affect how a parents figure think about their child. Or my parents had emotional abused me and now I done it to myself.
If think about it, when you create a wrong art, and you tell yourself it’s waste of time. The art its self is “your child” or you as a children. You feel extremely sad as a children of your parents when you showing a drawing to your parents and they told you it’s waste of time. You are not appreciate the work and patience and believe that a child could learn from it.
The parents forget to celebrate and believe that the child could improve . As we ourselve forget to celebrate and believe that We can improve.
We are just like our abusive parents. We treat our inner child brutally, sabotage and telling ourselves that we are slow to learn, and why we can just be able to just Done it!
We become the person that we had been against it the most.
We promised we never become our abusive parents, but now we just adopt their habit unknowingly, and sabotage and frustrated ourselves

Yes, it feels that way sometimes. In a world that leans unromantically toward mechanism and data, to create something new from one's own heart and passion is a statement of the spirit of individuality and independence. Sometimes I look around at some of my pieces, mostly amateurish and not quite reaching the mark, but these creations were born of my desire to feel something, to express myself, however clumsily. Sometimes I see one of these pieces and with new eyes I love it. It's all okay, whether it means nothing or means everything. We create it. That's enough.

But no time is wasted on a pursuit; it is a vehicle for something, some feeling, some need and it has value. it may end up teaching us in the end of what not to do, or it may give us a masterpiece, if only in our own eyes.

Art is what makes humans different than other species, and all technology. They say we will know we've reach general A.I. when it decides to create art on its own. A very famous artist made a song called "today". Stating "today is the greatest day I've ever known". It was his lowest point of depression and his darkest day of sadness in a writer's block so awful contemplating suicide was only the beginning. It was his worst day, therefore his greatest. He could never feel worse in his life and this was freeing to him, and he based his most famous song on this day.

It feels like "a waste of time" raises the question of productivity. Art doesn't need to be productive, it doesn't need to be perfect or cashable. It takes time to rewire one's brain to "enjoy the process" as a lot of artists say, but I believe the beauty of art lies there. To me, the most meaningful part of art is entering "the zone", when I'm so focused on each stroke of paint that hours feel like seconds. It is so therapeutic to lose yourself in the making of a piece, putting all your time and energy into something that may not even be good I think is a form of unconditional love. Giving just for the sake of it, and expecting nothing in return. That, to me, is one of the pillars of art.

For me making art has become similar to playing dark souls. For several years, I used to get inspiration to start, but then I'd suck and be demotivated by the absolute demolition of the beautiful idea I had in my mind before putting brush on canvas. Then this cycle would repeat. UNTIL the day something clicked, and my art just went to the next level. I began creating art that surpassed my own expectations. And it became enjoyable again. Since then, I've started earning from art alone, I receive genuine praises and have returning customers who love my art. So as someone who started as an absolute noob and learnt by watching the great teachers of youtube... don't give up. You'll eventually GIT GUD

When I was a kid I got disappointed with myself painting and I stopped. Then a few years later i came back to it and I started figuring it out. Good I haven't given up. For me, it's important to stop when I think in destructive ways, and restart. And start again, thinking how I can figure it out, because I can.
Art is some beautiful thing in the air, that we, painters are trying to catch on canvas. That is what makes art meaningful. Keep your eyes peeled for that spark in the air cause it will visit you again and again, you don't need to worry.
Art is meaningless for people who make it meaningless. For people who are harsh on themselves and who make everything rationalized and that don't give in to pleasure. That is not a criticism on their character, that's a criticism on the meaningless mind program. You are meaningful and art is meaningful. And inspiration is what makes it meaningful.

Creating is Meaning. Yes, absolutely. Creating is an on going process which can be a joyful experience in itself. A lot of artists focus on the finished product or the "created" as a measure of success, when creating is the experience. If you come away with a work that is to your liking, all the better but in my opinion it is the Journey. "The art Journey". John said it himself. Enjoy the journey and the ever expanding sense of success. It should never end, and therefore the joy is never ending. That said, it will be frustrating every time but in the frustration there are lessons that will make you better.

I agree, it's not that controversial tbh (or maybe it is but), it's the job of an artist. You should be critical of what other artists do (not with words but with your art) and try your best to bring something that you consider to be better.

In the grand scheme of things, nothing matters. The world will forget about our art, the earth will die out, the universe will go cold and dead. *BUT* "nothing matters" is equivalent to "everything or anything matters (equally)" in the grand scheme of things. What you are feeling matters. What you are drawing matters. A star being born in a distant galaxy matters just as much as your art and feelings. Take pride in that.

There is no waste in creating paintings that you "throw away". To be honest, I never threw away a painting, but I just painted over the canvas afterwards. So now I have two paintings, one that is visible, the other that will be visible in the future through spectroscopy or imaging techniques :). You cannot magically gain experience by only working on "amazing paintings", just because you intend to only make amazing paintings, you have to go through the entire process of learning. Don't look for the short exit. In IKEA you have the secret quick exits, you can skip the walk through the store if you look to how to get to the cash register sooner. In art, it's not there and personally speaking, as an artist, it's ok. John is very close to achieving a level where he values what he is doing, please continue on the path, paint MORE instead of less, learn from it and go for it. Don't think of it as a struggle, enjoy what you're doing. Remember: it's always better to do one painting in five nights that you end up throwing away than sitting on the couch watching netflix eating crisps.

When you feel depressed or disappointed due to unexpected incidents or occurrence, you suffered and question about life meaning/meaninglessness. People don't question about life meaning when they are happy exciting or cheerful.
So my points is life meaning is personal , temporary and artificial, you need to find excuses (no species other than human invent "meaning" to justify for their suffering) to justify for your cause whether it's art, music, family or finance,... Fill your life with joys, positivity or waiting for temporary pain, dissatisfaction fading away and keep moving. Manifesting the vision of success in your mind daily make it so vivid lively and powerful so that you can keep moving through struggles and hardship.

Thank you for the words, I need to think about this subject a lot.
When I think about it, I have no idea when I started drawing, just that I've never really stopped. It's fun to scribble lines on paper, so I never stopped when I was a child, or when I was a teen. Eventually sure, there were moments that I thought I should take it more seriously. So I studied what I could, tried new things, search for more things on how to improve, etc.
But I never before thought seriously on why, and if there was any value in it, I just knew it was fun, it was cool and maybe, maybe one day I could potentially have income from it.
Today was the first day where I actually questioned myself if I wasn't wasting my time, if what I actually have been doing had any value or meaning.
If I like it, maybe it's valuable enough?
If someone else's likes it, even if it's just one person, maybe it's worth it?
I know I kind of just begun my journey, and that it will never really end, but I wonder when I'll figure out the answer to these questions. Do people find these answers? Or do we always come back to them?
I've been researching and reading a lot of comments from different artists sharing their experiences, so I'll also share mine, in case this ever reaches anyone.

Thank you Florent, this was beautifully said and now I feel a little more better about my art, I think I should share it with the world instead of hiding it away (even though I've thought it's not good enough, you've just made me realise it doesn't matter, it's the sharing of our experiences that matter!) I'm going to share this video with my kids too (young adults) I feel this goes beyond creating art si thank you!🥰👏👏👏

That is part of the process. Trial and error equals process and end results. Im a paper sculptor and im self taught so my process of creating is built and tear down until im fully satisfied of what i created. It's hard work and takes patience endurance and i never give up. That said i created some amazing sculptures that i surprise myself when im done and I've learned new techniques through the process which has made me a better sculptor. Don't give up if you have the passion to create. Its a journey.

Thank you. I enjoyed listening to your deep thoughts on this. So encouraging as an artist I admit I have also struggled with these feelings when things aren’t going right with my art. I like what you say about sacrifice too, that we must sacrifice something in order to creat something (time, comfort, etc). I find meaning in my belief that there is a Creator in whose image we are made. In our creating we are reflecting His creativity which brings glory to Him.

I have struggled with my painting since I was 10 years old. I have even given it up because my paintings are not what I expect them to be. I retired 3 years and picked up a brush again. I started out being discouraged. However instead of quitting and giving up I pushed through. In the last three years I have painted for several weeks only to paint over it and start again not feeling my efforts were a wast of time. I have found that every time I have done this I find myself leaning what not to do. Painting is a learning process like many things we do in life. Doing something you want to do or like to do is never a waist of time. When you start losing your excitement about a painting your working on put it aside, figure how you can do it better, look on TH-cam at others artist the way they paint, and figure out what you want to do and do it. Even if it means starting over. That what I do. Painting is a struggle with your brain and your hand.

I object only that the six hours was not a waste of time. That's what "studies" are for, and it took that six hours to hone the idea in your mind, to get a better idea of the scale and composition. It takes the time it takes to get the painting right.

Thanks florent, this video is so qprecious. I believe real passion and love conquers fear of anything! if the desire of wanting to paint is so strong and painting process brings so much joy who cares about wasting of time or supplies? Ive wasted tons and tons of supplies and constantly broke, like many artists, that never stopped us from keep painting ugly paintings, imagine if vincent van gough valued his paintings the same way as this guy who emailed you did?

Florent, master of painting and painting analogies! I couldn't agree more. If you want to devolve into what is meaningful and what is meaningless, we will be here until we run out of topics. You can logic your way into real nihilism if you think things need true meaning to even do them. What is meaning anyways? We would likely say, it is in reference to other people and the impact our actions have on their lives. I can impact lives with my art, even if it sucks. For art is subjective, and it will not suck for everyone. I keep almost all of my art so that I can pull it out one day, maybe when I've changed to a new person, and then at that time, from thay perspective, I may find that I love it.

To me art is an invitation to communicate. When i paint i communicate with myself and the painting i am making. When i show the finished work to someone else then the work is an invitation for the viewer to communicate with the painting, with herself or with me. Btw, the work doesn't have to be of good quality in order to serve this purpose.
    Maybe communication equals meaning?

Well did I ever need to see this video because I had just finishing a colour and drawing study of one of Gauguin pictures and put 2 1/2 hours into it only to rip it out of my sketch book in total disgust as it was a total failure... then beat myself up for not paying attention to one area that totally wrecked my study... how I sucked at being an artist and grateful that no one here to see my Big mess... after watching this I totally cooled my jets and rethought my error only to try again tomorrow... chalked it up to a growing process...at least I tried ... so not really a failure ...Thank you Florent for your honesty and sharing this ...

I always subjected art to my own needs (particularly drawing) to express how I feel, which is of course what most artists do, it's like a public diary more and less, and I'm only referring to drawing/painting. But after some time I realized that I don't need to express anything anymore, because I'm actually confused about what it's supposed to be in the end. And somehow, throught the lens of art, my emotions seem taken less seriously. That's why it's meaningless to me and I can't say for sure that it's better to keep everything to myself, then letting others relate to it, which can be comforting, but still, I guess the underestimation of the emotions is what stops me to express anything because it can actually be something far too mysterious, than how I imagine it. You know, the art of drawing is documentary-sh, it has boundaries, unlike music, which gives the most freedom. So unfortunately or not, despite people telling me I have the skills and asking for commissions for example sometimes, I say "no", because I really don't want to draw anymore and it's totally fine.
But if it's not meaningless to you, that's also fine :)

I've been at this point for some time. The only thing that ever seems to get me out of the funk is when I bought yet ANOTHER art supply (paints, brushes), it was only after I realized this that I just put everything away and turned to things that are a better ROI of my efforts. I love beautiful artwork, but at this present time and the foreseeable future, I don't see myself ever having that passion for creating art that I did when I started my art journey 11 years ago.

Are we not trying to create beauty in all our paintings, even in dark subjects (Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du Mal)? It is when we feel that our paintings are not beautiful that we think they are meaningless and we have wasted our time. As I learn and practise more, I look back at earlier paintings and think they are no good but really they are just part of a continuous journey. Thank you for this thought-provoking video Florent.

I can relate to that artist who expects the worst after the spark has fizzled out. But, that's why we call it work. I am sometimes working on one painting for months, even a year. The final layer is worth it once I see I have accomplished my goal. This is my teacher. The next painting will bring new problems, and new epiphanies! I will not stop until I cannot paint or draw any longer.

Very thought provoking! It is true that value and meaning get confused. And rightly so; that meaning is a rare commodity in nature and also a product of the accumulation of small increments of valuable ideas and skills. Something that drives another to create a new experience is quite meaningful. If everything was to be meaningful intrinsicly and thus we have already found what we were looking for without effort of exploration, then that would devalue and destroy all meaning.

most of us are compelled to express ourselves. doing so through art (of any kind) is a positive and creative act. There are many destructive ways of expression that add nothing to the human experience. It's a personal choice.

But painting for who or whom? If we create for ourselves, why? To sit and watch what for how long and with what end goal? If made for others, how we make meaning for others really? People do not anymore have focus, time, and intellect to reflect over art…. Is an honest statement and a fact. We live in a time where all people spend 5-7 hours on smartphones on social media and internet games with very cheap graphics and art… people can no longer sense what is quality… and the other side is political leftist feminist art that only like your art so to spread hate towards men and and make women feel oppressed, nonsense art and too many such workshops..l real art like Da Vinci and Picaso does not exsistnymore… be honest… what is beautiful is art of the past, not art by modern humans, we feel touched by the nostalgia of the past in real art… but what we make today, is nothing as no one can see it, understand it or create it, we are imitations of past artists and inventions and manipulated by politics. Yes, is wasted time! Is meaningless, and why bother… for whom?
