I’m a long time shredder with Wolf Marshall’s books and did my best in the 80s and beyond…picking wasn’t much talked about…I had assumed the tab was correct and was alternate picking. Kids are lucky to have this info today!
Don't even get me started on generations of people using the wrong patterns in Far Beyond The Sun 😄
@@ChrisBrooksGuitar , Far Beyond the Sun has always been one of my favorites, as well as I am a Viking.
Yngwie blew my mind when Rising Force came out, I was aware of his playing but had no idea how great he really was. You are nailing it bro.
Marching Out is the best Yngiwe album and this is a MONSTER track, thanks.
Great job Chris. After 35 years, someone is showing people, how to really play this.
It had to be done :)
@ChaosTrident the 90s transcriptions (Young Guitar et al) got closer than the 80s books but guessed things like pull-offs on feel or sound rather than systematically knowing where they would always show up. Same for pick strokes.
Nobody has explained and demonstrated this stuff with this fidelity until now. Chris absolutely nails the playing, and then nails the instruction too. Amazing job.
@@ChrisBrooksGuitar Thanks maestro, I have always been doing all this with straight alternate picking, and it became an exercise because when I hitted the low E, I started again but backwards and connected it with the begining in F#, when I began to doit in the regular dirección again, all in a perpetual motion, at a medium speed, like a warm up, but from now on I will do it like you, with the economy picking on A and C, but with the perpetual motion concept.
Good Lord! Will there ever be anything ever released again that initially excited me like the 1st time I heard VH debut when it came out, or when i heard this album when it was released, or heard Ozzy's 1st album with RR when it debuted? These were natural high moments for me as a kid. Been chasing the dragon ever since.
Yngwie is such a beast.
As a performance major, we get tested on a music piece of choice, last semester, I chose this solo and Joe and I worked on it the entire semester, he got it easily but I worked at it a lot haha. It's not easy but certainly satisfying to nail. The opening run is legendary. My favorite lick of all time.
The black star opening is also just a classic
@@jakemf1 me
You notice every nuance perfectly. Yngwie is often criticized by not soloing on the beat, however I've always loved that aspect of his playing. It makes the shredding in his solos sound very raw and human, and not like a machine. As you noted all other shredders, like Paul Gilbert for example, even use metronomes when practicing solos patterns. Well, much of his live extended soloing sounds like a practice and not creative at all (he has to resort to a power drill to make it interesting). Same with MAB, perhaps the most impressive shredder. Sounds like a machine.
Absolutely true. YJM is basically "bending time" to emphasize the dramatics of his solo. If you listen to Frank Sinatra, he is doing that with his singing too. It is the mark of a true master.
You must be a beast on guitar to notice such details! I was 16 when that song came out. IT blew me away! So sad that SO SO MANY LOL! shredders wanted to sound like him that IMO he got drowned out in a world of Malmsteen-wannabes. That & his song writing skills arent that strong. Unless he intended to be non-commercial.
Lol nonsense and you know it. Don´t take away the thunder from the greatest Entertainer who ever lived.@@ReagorNation
lol@@ReagorNation
Perfect approach. You even got that thumb flexion YJM has on those fast parts.
Original lick in the song is so so in your face, fast, you don't even notice the pull-off every 7 notes with his sound. A total monster of a guitar player.
BTW this track will be 40 yo in just 2 years.
Sounds great man, Yngwie is tough to get right.
hands down the biggest understatement I've read in a while lol
Great lesson, man!!
Thank you kindly!
Yes! I agree...
Thanks Chris. Effortlessly clean playing as usual.
Thanks so much!
This man gave crucial information about YM style and how to play the nuances of his style that nobody ever has to my knowledge. Incredible.
Thanks so much. I'm working on the ultimate video course at the moment to go into even more detail.
So good to see you Chris....You make so much sense of this kind of playing. Doesn't make it any easier to execute, but its lovely to finally get a glimpse of whats involved. Thanks mate!
My pleasure!
Thanks for the great lesson Chris. A real 'nuts and bolts' explanation. Excellent playing. 🎵
The algorithm FINALLY comes through. I’ve been struggling with this for months. Thank you google and thanks Chris for the content.
Excellent! Glad the video reached you.
Excellent lick choice showcasing the most iconic Yngwie phrases and techniques. You really know your stuff. Great vid!
Thank you very much. Glad you liked it!
Hi Chris!
I just wanted to say that your book, 'Neo Classical Speed Strategies for Guitar: The Yng Way!' has been a game-changer for me. I bought it three years ago, and I've been revisiting it this week. It's still incredible, and it's helped me a lot. I'm from Guadalajara, Mexico, and I just wanted to express my gratitude. Thanks a ton!
Muchas gracias! Really glad to hear that. Congratulations on your breakthroughs!
Great stuff Chris, this is a good follow up to your book The Yng Way, I'm printing the tabs and adding them to the end. Look forward to more. Thank you.
Awesome, thank you!
Chris, 2 days after subbing to your patreon lessons, I finally hit that speed burst with downward pick slanting!!!!! The economy picking aspect of this is a lot easier than pure alt. My biggest flaw was with downward pick slanting though(I've been an upward slanter for 35 years). Your lessons have helped me figure out what I was doing wrong. I can now comfortably go beyond 150bpm with 16ths ups and dps! Thanks so much man!
That's excellent to here
amazing as always mate, extremely well played and on point explanation
Thank you kindly!
Awesome job Chris. Thanks for doing the video!
My pleasure
Great lesson as always Chris! :)
Love it dude! Amazing breakdown!
Thank you sir
First time I've ever heard anyone address the dilberate change in Yngwie's phrasing. Awesome.
Thank you! Don't forget to subscribe or check out the 2 other episodes I've done in these series. 😊

Great work man, you make it look effortless!
Thank you! Cheers!
Outstanding lesson. Your playing is exceptionally fluid.
Thank you very much
Thanks chris! Pls more of these "yngway applied" lessons!
You got it!
One of very few youtubers who actually understands Yngwie's style! Great work. This videos proves the basic Internet theory. You need to sift through a lot of crap to find something good!
Thanks again.
I liked the early tabs because they told me what the notes were, but I noticed very early on that the tabs didn't match with what I'd observed Yngwie doing in the few video footages I had access to back then. Even when I could put my hands on the infamous REH video, the tabs were all over the place! It was funny but very frustrating too. I was able to learn a few things off the Wolf Marshall transcriptions, but always experimenting and trying to match what I did and what I heard to what I saw. It's really cool having someone dissecting all those licks in detail. Even after all these years, even though there are lots of very technically accomplished players, I still think Yngwie's playing -- specially those three first albums -- constitute quite a legacy, one that should be appreciated, preserved and studied.
Thanks for a great video. Even if I no longer pursue a dream of becoming a pro musician these days, I'll make sure to look your book up in amzn, as playing the guitar is one of the few joys available for an old geeky guy like me these days.
Thanks so much
Top notch as always Chris, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it
My favorite Yngwie song !
It's a classic for good reason!
very very clear & smooth :D
Thank you for this - that intro run is still awesome to this day.
Sure is. Thanks!
I've been wanting a lesson on this specific run for ages. I can't even begin to thank you. I'll buy your book asap. Once again THANKS A LOT.

@@ChrisBrooksGuitar I'm just wondering, what pick do you use? I use a 2.0mm Dunlop (Black). Just wondering if you can can post an "economy picking" tutorial. Start the riff on the 6th string? By the way, I have subscribed.
I usea Swiss Picks Jazz Plus 1.8mm. Hopefully I'll have an economy picking course out this year.

Hey Chris, I may be a late bloomer, but I still bloomed!
Great pick and lesson Chris! I've been playing this solo for years, its one of my favorites and is great for chops maintenance, but the biggest challenge building it up to higher speeds has been the initial run demonstrated. I think this is going to help and I'll have to pick up some of your material, thanks!
Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy the books!
Absolutely choice lesson and thank you so much
My pleasure!
Thanks so much for this video Chris! It reallly helps me understand yngwie' s playing. I always struggle when I play most of his guitar solos as I try pick every single note (Petrucci way haha) in the fast passages. Subscribed!!
Glad to help! And great to have you here!
Awesome and subscribed. I bought your Neo-classical speed strategies book on Amazon which was great!
Awesome! Thank you!
One of my favorite Malmsteen solos. I have always suspected that Yngwie economy picked that beginning run. I’ll continue to alternate pick it though. I’m too old too learn economy picking! Lol. Anyway, thanks for this Chris!
Never too old, but do what works!
I was the same way, always an alternate picker and a great sweep picker, but then after really digging into Yngwie's fast runs that seemed too quick to nail with purely alternate picking and getting the right tone, I started learning economy picking. I figured I wouldn't "switch" to economy picking, and that I would commit to doing both economy and alternate as well as possible so that I could do either one. It gets easier, feels weird at first and clunky... Almost like it's way less efficient than alternate picking. But if you just mess with it for 20 to 30 minutes every time you play, the muscle memory will set in after a few months and you won't even notice the work youve been putting into it.
He always use economy picking, picking in whatever direction is the string relative of pick current position. Sweeping is a case of economy.
Superb explaination, superb display thank you so much for this ...now if there is one more Ynwgie run you could treat similar is the trilogy suite op5 opening runs ....that would be awesone to debunk as well
Thanks! I've got that one down, it might show up in a video soon :)
Please do this Chris! I arrived at this video trying to work on that exact opening sequence. Also just bought your book from Amazon ;-)
You helped me a lot bro
Glad to hear it!
Really good lesson on this one Chris- I like the way you point out the D# and D note running together- but only between the B and G String- I've noticed that with Yngwie forever but never noticed it's really just those two strings- I think, IMHO, he did that because it's easier to finger then to use a "pure" harmonic minor scale- skipping that big stretch if it was just harmonic minor and it fits just the same over a minor chord. It's almost like he moves from Harmonic Minor to Aeolian on those two strings- consistently! Also- I love how you showed the difference between a perfect meter timing approach and Yngwie's more fluid behind and ahead of the beat approach. It's interesting to me to hear how much more I love Yngwie's approach and how much more musical is sounds to me. So much more fluid and violin-like. BTW- just bought the book (also have previously purchased the YngWay course) and love how you shout out to Troy Grady for his work! I started watching Troy back when his hair was dark (mine too back then) and "Ships Were Burned"! Really just excellent content Chris- you're one of my favorite TH-cam sources!
Thanks so much for the feedback and support.
It's amazing that you can play this stuff. I have always really enjoyed that little part of the song

Cannot say enough good things about your books mate. I own the trilogy of neoclassical, sweeping and legato, and your economy picking book and they are exquisite!!!
I was curious as to what pick you are using if I may ask. I like the colour and and love collecting picks haha. Keep it up dude! :)
Thank you. I'm using a Swiss picks jazz plus 1.8mm
I like the way you think man. Well spoken lesson.
Thank you!
This is fantastic. Trying to just middle through one of his official transcription books can be a bit daunting (I’m pretty rusty on reading staff, and trying to get my Tab chops back, after not playing seriously for several years.
Would love if you tackled the pedal notes portion that shows up right after this part. 🤘

Glad to hear!
I remember when I first heard OF Yngwie , but had not yet heard the music - way back in spring of 1985. When I finally heard him , many of my peers were just as dumbfounded as myself - I remember one of the rumors at the time was that he played with paper thin picks 😂 - years later as I’ve figured a few things out on guitar (no, not Yngwie stuff, unfortunately-yet) I realized how silly that rumor was/is.
Anyways , yes he was such an anomaly upon coming out of nowhere, back then. And if you think about it - it was the perfect time of his revealing, because technical guitar/ especially hard rock guitar was so popular- it was like the ground was already tilled and fertile , waiting for him. Those days for popular music were just awesome, it was such a great time to be coming up
Totally agreed. So many myths and half truths to sift through too.
Just purchased the book after reading all the wonderful comments I don't normally buy into guitar lesson books but this one looks promising 😎✌
