    I always wondered why people spend so much money on such impressive hardware and all they do with it play some simple random computer beeps. So far i couldn't find any video about modular where they didn't just played some simple beeps my Commodore 64 could have done just as easily 40 years ago. Isn't it possible to play real music on these devices, like you can with regular synths?

    • @VisionsMusicGroup
      @VisionsMusicGroup  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Great question, thank you! First, you have to define "real music"; because one mans bleep is another mans music, truly. But I get what you're saying, I had the same impression at the start as well. The short answer, yes absolute, you can use modular and random events and voltages to create "real music". Check out the Modular Works collection by State Azure, or sessions by SUTURE SOUND, or long form generative streams by Mirko Ruta and dozens of other examples. They are out there, you just have to know what to ask for. "Ambient" (if that's your thing) "generative" (if you like long form pieces that create themselves) or artists that work entirely with Modular Synths and put albums out on Bandcamp, Spotify, etc. Lots of bleeping and blooping, otherwise... which is not a bad thing :) Even my own Sonic Experiments playlist here is more than just bloops, but again, it's matter of taste.

      As far as these TH-cam overviews and tutorials go, Tim Shoebridge is the only person I've come across that has physically played a song tune, on a modular synth.

    What, you too? After watching Tim Shoebridge I ended up with more oscillators than I budgeted for, but then again his videos are excellent at expalining why one isn't always enough. I thought I'd join you on your modular journey, so I hope you don't mind I've subbed and now watching your backcatalogue. Excellent.

    I have no problem with Behringer, I just bought the System 55 and will be adding a few more modules to the bottom row, I have they're Odyssey, DeepMind 6 and the 2600 and have had zero issues with any of it, I will eventually be adding the System 100 to the mix, Very informative video, thanks for posting. Just found this video and learned some things from it even though it is a year old.

    Wow, this is probably the best intro to modular on TH-cam. Seriously, I've watched everything from really big TH-camrs and it felt more like a brag fest.
    For other beginners wondering about other good sources, I'll say that Omri's VCV Rack stuff is also amazing.

    First, I love Behringer! Making my synth dreams come true.
    Great description of each module.
    The system 100 is very compelling because of how well thought out it is, and how much they pack into each module.
    The only down side is, that they are a little cramped.
    Thanks for this video, and best wishes for your continued success.

    Just found this video, AWSOME! Thank you for sharing this experience. I too have been watching Tim Shoebridge videos on the B System 100 modules. During covid lockdown, I wanted to build a system like this, but like you experienced, the supply of modules was limited or nonexistent. I see that this stuff is now available, might be the right time to build out a system like this. I love the exploration of modular and trying to figure out how to make it play a roll in music making along side my other music gear. Thanks again for this video!

    Great video!!! It's good to see how one could build up a patch from scratch with these modules and in particular which additional modules such as clock divider and quantizer would be needed, as they are a bit of a must-have in order to get going. So, pointing out what additional modules to get to complement these basic modules is very appreciated.Things got out of hand for me and ended I up with a 8 voice 24 oscillator 100m system put in sturdy, custom made IKEA skiffs .....
    With regard to Behringer hate, I thinks it undeserved when it comes to their 100m series. It's true to the original more or less. The build quality is good. Out of 24 oscillators purchased, 1 was defect which was replaced immediately, I guess that's ok.
    The not so good things in the system is that the oscillators have had tuning issues (see Tim Shoebridge), the tiny pots make it very hard to tune the oscillators/sequencers and that same controls (portamento) need to be attenuated in order to be useful. Otherwise, I am quite happy with it.

    I didn’t hear you mention this but there are 11 system 100 modules, the one you don’t have is one I’d recommend to anyone curious about getting the system 100 sound with just one module. It’s the 110 module, which is also recommended by Tim Shoebridge as a starter module.
    These modules sound great and are stable and very flexible analog modules. I love them all except maybe the 172 phase shifter/delay which is really underwhelming and I guess it’s the same with the old Roland versions.

    Great video, thank you! I just ordered my first modular, many modules from the system100.
    I'd love to see more in depth videos of the individual modules. Screw the haters.
    The only solid reason to hate Behringer is when you bought a 5000 euros machine (like the 909) and now Behringer made a better version for 350 euros and you feel ripped off.
    "I have a studio worth 200.000 euros because I have collected super expensive synths which aren't produced anymore"
    Yeah, nice, I have the same setup for 10.000 euros because Behringer copied it, included MIDI and USB, added community suggested features and released it for an honest price instead of making it only accessible to the elite and rich.
    If you don't like it, just don't buy it! Feel free to pay for overpriced machines, it's your money. And there are loads of machines they didn't copy and are awesome!
    Small machine producers can't compete with the low prices of Behringer, that's true. But there's always a market for those machines too.
    R&D will never stop, even Behringer does R&D to create new machines like the Neutron and Proton and to continue the Crave, Edge and Spice line (further then Moog did).
    But they also copy stuff that's not produced anymore which is super expensive and rare (909, 808, 303 etc.), and copy stuff which is a ripoff (Moog Mother32 etc.) while make it better to make it accessible to anyone.
    Programmers copy and share their codes all the time. It makes the world better.
    Just be happy you don't have to sell some of you organs to be able to buy a synth to add to your collection. I'd rather have 10 cheap ones then 1 expensive one for the same total price. Focus your hate towards Putin instead :)

      Love your passion, especially the closing line 🥰 While I myself do not hate Behringer, I do understand the animosity isn't necessarily the copying of old, unavailable hardware - it's copying things that are still currently available - e.g., Swing, Abacus, etc. Otherwise, I love how Behringer revives old, dead classics at a fraction of the cost to us than "official necromancy", so for that I am grateful. My UB-Xa is enroute 😁

    Audio Delay is used for a chorus or flanger effect. If you can get the dry signal mixed with a delayed signal you’ll get a comb filter. If you add an LFO to the delay time (while the dry and delayed signal are mixed) you’ll get a chorus or flanger effect depending on delay time.
    I was about to go all in on System 100 last year but ran into the same stock issue as you. It may be time to do it now that they are all back in stock! Any purchase regrets in terms of modules (buy more/less, omit, etc.?)

    • @VisionsMusicGroup
      @VisionsMusicGroup  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for the Audio Delay tip! As for regrets, as far as these System 100 modules go the only thing I am not making use of is the 297 (except the dual Portamento occasionally) and the ParametricEQ in the 305. Seems a waste that the EQ only handles 1 channel, unless I have completely missed a feature somewhere 😁 I may not have needed 2 ea VCF, VCA and EG... since they have so many i/o each... but it wasn't a heavy spend and looks all sexy in it's symmetry 🥰

    • @ericMT
      @ericMT ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VisionsMusicGroup the 297 has a lot of functionality. It has two 4 channel CV or audio mixers, you can invert the output signal and that can be a gate or any control voltage. Tons of uses for that to create complex LFOs and more. Inputs 3 and 4 are normalized to + or - 10v and you can attenuate those levels to send specific voltages to other modules.
      If you use the +10v out near the middle and send that to the CV input on the delay, it slows it down a little to where it’s almost usable as a chorus effect. It’s more of a bucket brigade delay or flanger than a delay; I wish they hadn’t called it that but maybe that’s what Roland did as well. It’s pretty noisy so I don’t use it much but it is fun to play with.
      All these modules are discounted right now so I’d encourage everyone to get at least a few of them. They are real workhorses for any modular system, and sound great in my opinion.

    Fabulous video. Can you help me though plz. I have a full system as well, apart from the combined vco,vcf and vca module (110). I can only get stereo panning with the module mixer if I plug the outputs straight into the speakers. If I plug in via my UMC22 Behringer audio interface, it combines the outputs and its basically mono. Are you using a stereo mixer or something?? I need to monitor the stereo from the speakers as well as record in stereo. I've tried to get help from forums. But always seem to get the 'what are you trying to achieve ' and 'whats wrong with mono?' Unbelievable. Please could you explain in simple newbie terms. Thank you kindly.

      Taking a quick look at the UMC22, I do see 2 inputs (mic/inst) and 2 outputs (L/R) but I do not see an option for "panning". If you're also using a DAW (Abelton, Logic, etc) you'll likely need to pan the incoming MONO signals from L/R Out to either a stereo pair or 2 mono tracks in the DAW, which should then let you pan. Aside from this, I am afraid I cannot help much more. The above is exactly what I use, but my mixer is a Mackie DL32R so a bit bigger than the UMC22, which may be more configurable.

    Hi, bit late to the party here but I’ll leave a comment anyway. Regarding the Audio Delay, I think you’re not hearing it because it patched before the VCA which is cutting off the effect if you see what I mean? The Phaser and Delay work better post VCA. QUESTION: does combining the dual VCO, dual VCF, dual VCA, and dual Envelope Generator yield a true "two-voice" (duophonic) polysynth? As in, can both VCOs run through their own independent VCF/VCA/EG? Or, in practice, is it more like paraphony, where while the VCOs may be assigned different pitches, they all run through the same VCF/VCA/EG?
    I'm trying to build a 4-voice polysynth with the system 100 and this would be helpful to know.

    • @VisionsMusicGroup
      @VisionsMusicGroup  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hello! I am no expert, so you really should fact check me, but if you look at chapter Part 2 Recap @ 36:03 you can see a green patch cable going from VCO 1 to VCF 1 to VCA 1 and a gate signal to EG 1 that opens/closes VCA 1. Same with blue patch cable (Voice 2, completely separate signal path), and later for Voice 3 (Red) and Voice 4 (Yellow) by the end of the presentation.
      I have never done "polyphony" with a keyboard controller, but I know this setup (dual 112, 121, 130, 140) would yield 4 entirely separate voices, each filterable and enveloped/gated separately. I think this is what you're asking. Hopefully someone else can weigh in and verify this for you.

      @@VisionsMusicGroup The AJH Minimod system is awesome. What a monster! Very good build quality, excellent sound, and great customer service (which you will probably not need. I did for a dodgy trimmer on a VCO.)

    Hi the delay 172 is a chorus, I love it, make it more subtle . The gates on the 173 can be used as a sub osc with the S/H module - check out th-cam.com/video/fWShhGTb9zk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ilEykIkNGoXxHD7z this is the only video that uses them for a purpose and it works. Great vid by the way the sound of the 100 is soooo good. I love the early Human League and this is their sound (Reproduction and Travelogue) Such a great sound - thanks

      I actually love the Behringer GO case. I've thought about picking up a 2nd for the MiniMOD system. The only thing I dislike are... sliding nuts. But they can be replaced 😁

      @@VisionsMusicGroup Does plastic feel sturdy? I have been going back and forth between a wooden case and behringer go case.

    • @VisionsMusicGroup
      @VisionsMusicGroup  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tomburden Honestly, it's not super solid like wood of course. There are gaps around the edges, and it does bend slightly when you pick it up full of modules. But for me, the benefits of cost, power (3A) and portability outweigh a barely noticeable plastic feel.

      @ericMT ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The case is sort of a clone of the Tiptop Mantis case which is also plastic. It’s pretty nice for the price which is only $229 on Sweetwater now. All the modules are less expensive as well so it’s a great time to jump in to this series of modules.

      Or they resent the actions of behringer suing people and companies that call them out for copying existing products (SLAPP suit against Ebtech over the comments on a forum about behringer stealing a cable tester design, or the Behringer Swing.) Behringer’s synths and mixers might be affordable and of decent enough quality, but i have trouble supporting a company that will make promotional material making fun of a journalist that reported on their issues.

      I’m putting together the 100 system now, next the 2500, or maybe the 2600, that ones easy! Lol. However mixing the Dreadbox system in (very affordable as well, then I’m running the Behringer Brains instead of the 110 right now. I’ll get one eventually plus I’m running a Radical Technologies 311 Swarm, a AMS Ensemble and a Roland M1 with a crave, k2 and Neutron. All of the Dreadbox Effects with modular connectivity a few without. So you’re set up is pretty close to mine. I went crazy with the oscillating 69 so far just in this set up. 71 with the Deepmind 12. I haven’t decided to use it as my keyboard yet. This I Just the Modular, I got more full synths and guitar synths, tons of FX. I love Behringer I would never have Been able to afford a modular set up without them! I’m paying close attention to your videos because I’m new to Modular as well! Both feet in the deep end!!! Lol ty for the video’s!
