axeofcreation you are most welcome. seriously, that was really great man. I wish I understood this lesson. I become instantly retarded when it comes to theory type stuff. Or maybe Im just retarded. Ha. Anyway, thank you for these lessons. Ill pick some of it up eventually. Some of the best lessons here btw. Cool. Keep doin what youre doin.
"It's just a tritone away" has helped my lead playing immensely as I play leads entirely on one string because I don't know my more exotic scale shapes. Thanks again Greg
Hello from Japan, just subscribed. Been new with DAW using a Cubase but struggling with creating cool riffs. I really like yiur teaching approach and insight with music theory combined with a technical tips. Thank-you😃
The greatest diminished scale moment in music probably is the Deliverance section in the 5 minute mark. The singing is diminished and sounds fantastic.
Awesome lesson here, LOVED the riffs and that intro is to die for!!! Would seriously enjoy seeing you make a part two to this where you explain soloing over the riff using the diminished scale too!!! Is this something thats utilized a lot by Jeff Loomis, some of it really gave me that sort of vibe!!!! And the new intro to the video is also a nice touch!!!
Thank you!! This is definitely something found in Loomis' playing. He mixes in a lot of harmonic minor as well. It all creates a "tense" sound but with slightly different flavors. I'll probably do more lessons with this scale, though maybe in a different style.
Awesome lesson you inspired me to try new things. I feel like I been stuck in a rut for the past few years only improving what I already know but not learning anything new. I guess I have to watch all your videos now. subscribed!
I love your playing and ideas, your use of theory etc. I love theory myself as it opens up so many possibilities. You really do use a 7 string to its full potential.
I got really confused because around 2:50 you kept playing frets 5 to 6 and I was like what.. the way he's explaining it that doesn't make any sense. So I slowed it down to half speed and watched your fingers closely. The first time you hit 5 to 6, the second 6 to 7. If I'm understanding correctly the correct way to play this is 6, 7, and with all of the frets on the low B string (0,1,3,4,6,7,9,10,12,13,15,16) Thank you for explaining this, I see so much potential here. I already treat the minor, harmonic minor and phrygian scale like one big scale while writing riffs, and adding this randomly in the mix I see a lot of potential to write riffs with notes that don't belong in key at all, that will throw listeners off, but still sound super heavy.
Would you consider doing a lesson on the Nevermore/Loomis riff style? It seems like a natural sequel to this lesson and I'm certain you'd do an excellent job of it.
don't know if you are gonna read this but if you are, then can you please do a video using a 1/2 whole diminished vibe constructing a basic meshuggah song with intro, verse, chorus, bridge etc? i feel you will teach it the best than the others.
You have earned a subscriber! I love how easy it is to understand you though I've only taken one class of basic music theory on piano! I appreciate your time for this video! Do you teach professionally? I'd be suprised if not!
axeofcreation I'll try it out. It's the EQing that gets me. Just that yours sounds so raw and powerful. Especially your dead notes, even those have a lot of umph to them.
Hey Greg, i know a very basic understanding of music theory and that stuff. I don't entirely understand exactly what a maj3 or a maj3 shape really means. Is there anything you'd recommend learning ex: a website? Or what would i google to call that type of thing? thanks, Jon.
Just google "interval shapes guitar". That should pull up plenty of images for the intervals on the guitar. If you can learn that a power chord is a "5th' than there's no reason can can't learn a few others!
Hey man, can you just clarify something for me. Don't you mean diminished 7ths are moveable by minor 3rds not dominant 7ths? If you meant dom7's can you explain me how?
You're correct. He meant dominant and did move them up In minor 3rds. However without the flat 9 It is not grounded in any music theory. I think he just thought because the Dom b9 ( aka ) Diminished chord can be moved that way. He just made up moving dom chords. It struck me as odd as well. It is not really defining anything. Most people do not know theory so maybe they think it is a concept. However it is not. I saw the same thing.
Because we're playing the B diminished scale and within that scale you'll find B7 (and 3 other Dominant chords). Meaning you can play the B diminished scale over a B7 (B D# F# A) and add a lot of tension by hitting all the tones against B (C-b9, D-#9, F-b5, G#-13). Which should help you see that in a "jazz" setting, the H/W diminished scale can be played over a Dom7, Dom7b9, Dom7#9, and Dom7b5, and Dom13 to great effect (lots of tension).
The 8 note diminished scale In the key of B has a Root a major 3rd and a flat 7 In the notes of the scale. The rest was not related to your question. F# is the dom to B. ( Why the guy tried to confuse you with jazz altered chord theory when you do not know much I have no Idea. Maybe he thought he would look Impressive. He looked rude to me. I actually taught the guitarist for Korn, Powerman5000 and spike1000 and toured the world. I am not Impressed with this guy or this riff.
the H/W or W/H is messing me up at the moment becuase of the fingering. I can throw in a phase here and there while improvsing...but I cant play the scale on the fly anywhere as I can do modes or maj/min pentatonic. Sometime i'll just do all minor3 intervals or the whole tone scale. Too many modes and scale messing me up. Too many to choose from. At least I dont sound the same.hahaaa Less appegios...the better.
Try focusing on altering a note or two in the modes you are comfortable with. That way, you realize the sound of that specific note (interval) rather than (re)envisioning a completely new scale pattern.
axeofcreation Thank you. I do axis pitch. So Im kind da all over the place. Sometimes I'll just play -2 in the harnoinic minor..So Im playing around the root note as a sort of pivot, That next i know..Im playing the -5.lmao. Cuase Im used to playing that -5 in the blues scale... Im confuse about playing the +4....but Im practicing as you say..just shift the enter tone center a minor 3rd interval from the -3? Im doing mixolydian over a minor progress(I'll mix it) The mixolyian over the minor progress sound spacy like satriani and not always like arabian music. I can mix the ionian, mixolian, aeolian on the fly anywhere on the fret board. So Im kind da conditioned.... Im trying to figure out what Shanker mix his with...i know most of his stuff is pentatonic..but mixed with another scale to get that sound.
Damn. That whole sequence was the coolest metal riffing Ive heard in a long time. Brutal.
That's a hell of a compliment! Thank you so much.
axeofcreation you are most welcome. seriously, that was really great man. I wish I understood this lesson. I become instantly retarded when it comes to theory type stuff. Or maybe Im just retarded. A tip : watch series at kaldrostream. Been using it for watching a lot of movies these days.
@Karter Morgan definitely, have been watching on flixzone} for months myself :D
@Karter Morgan Yup, been using flixzone} for years myself :D
"It's just a tritone away" has helped my lead playing immensely as I play leads entirely on one string because I don't know my more exotic scale shapes. Thanks again Greg
Nothing but respect. Awesome lesson . Every time I watch a video, it inspires me to play more. I'm in 12 years.
HOLY FUCKING BALLS THAT FIRST EXAMPLE RIFF
AHHHHHHHH
7:07 that open string dissonance I'm sure I've heard in plenty of Steve Vai compositions. Very cool.
+Daniel Verberne Thank you!
I need a guitar teacher like this in my town. I like the Nile style riffage with this Diminished tutorial.
Haven't watched since the upgrade. Professional, informative, intuitive, and on point as usual. Amazing. Keep crushing.
Thank you!!!
Hey there. Did a search on diminished for some new ideas and yours was the first I hit. Glad I did. You have it.
Hello from Japan, just subscribed. Been new with DAW using a Cubase but struggling with creating cool riffs. I really like yiur teaching approach and insight with music theory combined with a technical tips. Thank-you😃
Opeth called, they want their riff back :D
I'll take that as a compliment. #inspiration
axeofcreation I would do the same!
What Opeth song is being played at the beginning of this video? Please let me know.
Nice lesson! And I absolutely love your "Mars Attacks"-figurines on your monitors!
This lesson is excellent! Exactly what I was looking for! Thank you very much!
This lesson has helped me avoid the blockage to creating great music. Can you PLEASE upload more lessons?

Thank you, and welcome to the axe of creation!!!
That riff with the 1st fret bend is so tight man.
Amazing lesson Greg! Love the new intro for the video. You definitely change my perspective of the Dim scale. Thanks for sharing this!
Thank you! It's a great scale. So many harmonic possibilities within it
Really good lesson, Axe . One of your best
much appreciated!
Really great lesson. The way you explain is easy to follow. Even for someone like me who plays drums and is theory illiterate.
Brilliant work mate. Very versatile
Your a classy dude Greg! Love your videos!
Great lesson, thank you very much.

The dim scale is perfect for metal, especially death metal. Love it. The Onset of Putrefaction album by Necrophagist has alot of diminished riffs.
Man, I really thought I was gonna hear some Hell March when you hit the distortion. Still an awesome riff!
Would you consider doing a lesson on the Nevermore/Loomis riff style? It seems like a natural sequel to this lesson and I'm certain you'd do an excellent job of it.
Good stuff Axe! love your channel....great vid
Wonderfully lesson!
This is so fuckin metal. I need to learn my diminished scales. Awesome playing
awsome video mate, i have recently moved to guitar from bass, am struggling a tad
Love those riffs!
Wow! just... Wow! great lesson. One question, though... how thick is that pick? loved it
You're such a giving guy. Thanks so much for these lessons, extremely helpful and fucking brutal \m/ you're a legend mate
Much appreciated!
hello here is from Brazil, always accompany your videos, and are great, congratulations.
if so, what pitch you use
+Bruno Bernardo Obrigado! I don't think google translate work very well that time but I think you're asking me what my tuning is? Standard.
NICE FUCKING DISCOVERY! quarantine got me digging and finding gold on TH-cam! Nice dude great video. subscribed!

Beautiful schecter 7. Gotta get me one
You have earned a subscriber! I love how easy it is to understand you though I've only taken one class of basic music theory on piano! I appreciate your time for this video! Do you teach professionally? I'd be suprised if not!
Thank you!
Wow,the riffing made me feel alive
Could you do a diminished solo based lesson for metal as well? would be great 😊 thank you
Best videos as always.
such a groovy riff
Can u please do a lesson on SLAYERS approach to riffs of dissonance
That pick is huge, is it the pick of destiny? also sweet lesson man
That framed LOZ map on the wall is sick as fuck.
Yes. Yes it is.
great thanks for the lesson! & for your tone details! i'd love to see them for your Tool tone because .hre doesn't work in my 500x ://.
Can you not change the extension for the 500x?
Tapiwa Ushe Unfortunately I no longer have them.
:(. I'm dead now.
Come on man! It's simple.
Noise Gate-(Wah)-OD-Recto- (2 delays-Reverb)
(lead effects)
axeofcreation
I'll try it out. It's the EQing that gets me. Just that yours sounds so raw and powerful. Especially your dead notes, even those have a lot of umph to them.
Yes! Did I smell some surfing with the alien in there ; )
I will be buying a torpedo live now...thanks for making me more broke!
Ha! Best purchase I've made in a long time.
congrats... that's probably the thickest pick i've ever seen
Look up Rob Scallon. ( ^ω^)
Hi. I can't see this lesson. Have U tabs for Patreons from this lesson? Regards
What's that velcro thing at the end of the neck
Very cool
Is it cool to do a cover of the song in this as long as we credit you?
thank you for this vid :)
dude what are you tuned in? and thank you for the mind sponge I'm indulged in
If I remember correctly, this is in standard. Basing the scale off the open B.
good riff, kinda nevermore sound, some jeff loomis influence
damn sound just like opeth style death metal riffing
you're good dude' but does five go with two?
butting tabs will be so great for this lesson
cool beans thankx
Are the chords at 6:12 also possible to be considered as Lydian-based chords?
+Daniel Verberne Any (major) chord with a #11 would be lydian based. Or you can embellish that quality onto any major chord, either I or IV.
Hey Greg, i know a very basic understanding of music theory and that stuff. I don't entirely understand exactly what a maj3 or a maj3 shape really means. Is there anything you'd recommend learning ex: a website? Or what would i google to call that type of thing? thanks, Jon.

a Major 3rd is the 3rd note In the major scale. That simple.
I gotta answer this guys questions lol

How do I get my Floyd rose in that tuning
I like it
What kind of pick is that?
What do you call the string muting thing on the end of the neck?
Gruvgear fret wrap
Fall Of The Tyrant thanks
That will be the STRING MUTTER, Jesus.
***** y u heff to be so angryy? ayyy
+CosmicJesus String Mutter.. man, it's german, for string mom. =]
locrian Phrygia or aeolion?
Next artist like lesson should be Adam D from Killswitch Engage! Please!
Can I please have permission to use that half-whole diminished intro in a recording if i give full credit?
No sorry. Hopefully this can inspire your own creativity!
All good man, worth a shot. anyways keep up the sick videos!
Yeah you can use it. Change One chord and it is no longer the same progression.
is it the half/whole or the whole/half diminished?
half whole
Is the tritone shape for standard or drop D tuning?
I'm in standard tuning. If you happen to be in Drop D, then it takes on the shape of a maj 3rd. So, 67 becomes 87.
a Tri tone has nothing to do with tuning. a Tri tone means ( 3 full steps above a note ) That Is all it is.
What's up Pumpkin?
flat two equals minor three for locrian?
for that mode yes.
What are each notes tuned to?
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
Sorry I'm pretty bad with theory, why would B7 be the dominant 7th chord? isn't the dominant chord of B an F?

Can you do an 8 string video lesson please
I have some planned.
Cool
flat five or seven?
I guess Loomis and Merrow use this Scale alot.
half or whole?
We start on B then move to C, so Half. I don't understand your other comments.
Sounds like Opeth with 8 strings. Which they should do now
mantab
why u so cool
It's the voice
i thought the intro melody was pretty
Have I gone blind? I can't find the transcriptions for this...
No, they weren't up yet. They should be up now. Enjoy!

Actually H to whole Is made for Major chords. Whole to Half will work over a Minor chord. Whole half will fit great over A minor or B minor.
Call me nutty but I was more interested in the clean intro rather than the riffing bits :D
also known as the necrophagist scale !!!
or ulcerate intro opening tension !!!
The Devil's Dance...
You got an 8 string?!
It's on loan. The generous folks at Carvin are letting me demo and feature it in a couple videos. Expect those soon.
Korn fan ?
Sure?
what if you don't have a seven string? lol
LOL play it in E LOL
Dude looks like my old guitarist Dave. Before me and the singer tag teamed his ex and he quit. LoL
