    • @danielbooth3459
      @danielbooth3459 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If memory serves, the earliest surviving recording is by Leadbelly, a Blues singer from the 1920s. This was likely a song sung in the early to mid 1800s originally on plantations by slaves, and the soulful melody and lyrics only increase that likelihood - especially given the lyrics before censors got in the way of things. A youtube video containing the Leadbelly recording is available.

    • @imkluu
      @imkluu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danielbooth3459 I think you are mistaken as to it being sung by plantation slaves as the tune goes back further than slavery in America to the 16th century in England, about a bawdy house. It was also sung by miners in the American Appalachia in the early 1900's so it was not likely once a slave song.

    • @danielbooth3459
      @danielbooth3459 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@imkluu if it can be traced back to the 1600s, then it could easily have been sung by slaves in the 18th and 19th century. However, I was not aware it could be traced back that far. Kudos on the research. On the other hand, I had heard about the miners. Regardless of the songs origins, it's an amazingly powerful song about regret and redemption. Leadbelly's soulful rendition is stripped down and bare, while The Animals' version is full to the brim with musical accompaniment that really makes you feel every nuanced emotion of the Speaker (as in poetry, not the singer/ writer, but the character) in the song.

      Pat Donnelly yess! I was not even born when this song was released and I was born in late 1967 and eventually heard this song sometime in the 70s. I was a kid but I still thought it was catchy. It’s been in a lot of The Vietnam war movies. The thing that freaked me out the most is this song has some of the best instrumentalists & after hearing this guy sing it several times and then I finally got to see him, I’m WTH?? He sounds like he’s a lot older than what he actually is.

    Talking about a singing voice...this one can kill in a metaphorical way for sure. I am left speechless, as well as for the keyboard player. No one should assume that Musicians nowadays are better or even as good, they just have more technology at hand. The Animals probably lived die hard for their music between sunrise and dawn, no mobile phones, no twitter to distract them :-)

The Righteous Brothers You've Lost That Loving Feeling came out that year. He Played that one over and over. I was small but I remember him playing these two songs .

    1964, what a year that was! The Beatles opened the floodgates to America that year and the British Invasion was on. As huge as the Beatles became early on, being the pioneers of that genre, those other British groups, the Animals being one of them, were big too. They were able to capture some of the limelight bc they had music of their own to offer. Rollingstones had a song called TIME IS ON MY SIDE, which to this day, takes me back to a rainy morning in my freshmen yr of high school, as I'm scampering to my 2nd period class, clear across campus. Whoever had their little transistor radio on, running alongside me in the rain to her class, that song remains embedded in my memory even today. House of The Rising Sun became a hit but was relegated lesser status bc the Beatles owned the American airwaves then, song after song, album after album! Couldn't get enough of it!

    This song was so great because of the misfortune of their organ player not getting to the studio when they were recording it. The studio organ player filled in but he could not read music so he played by ear. This resulted in the organ being played a half note behind the rest of the band and they were going to redo it until they heard how great it worked on this song so they released this version. after which they made sure to do i this way in concert.

    'House of the Rising Sun' is not about singer Eric Burdon's life. It's actually a very old folk song whose exact origins are uncertain. It is believed to have evolved from the influence of several centuries-old British broadside ballads in which the "House of the Rising Sun" was used as the name of brothel or sometimes a pub. The version we know now was said to have been known by American miners dating back to 1905. The first printed lyrics of the song appeared in 1925 and it sung from the perspective of a female, implying that she'd gotten caught up in a life of prostitution. The lyrics were later changed to a male perspective and seems to be about a man addicted to gambling. It was first recorded by Appalachian folk artists in 1933 and later by blues artists like Leadbelly and then popular folk artists like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez before it became a big hit for the Animals. Eric Burdon, the Animals' singer, is from Newcastle, England, and heard it performed in a pub by local folk singer. No one knows for sure whether the song is about prostitution, gambling, or jail, and historians debate whether the "Rising Sun" was ever a real place in New Orleans or not. It's since been recorded by many other artists, from Dolly Parton to Five Finger Death Punch. Lauren O'Connell does a very eerie version that was used in the American Horror Story soundtrack.

    released in 1964. They made the video in one take, in 15 minutes. After
    they finished, they did a show. way ahead on their time. This song
    really is heart wrenching, it is embracing the darkness in ourselves.
    Very moving. I think the house of the rising sun is whatever your torment is,
    what prison we made for ourselves. Instead of breaking free of destruction,
    chaining ourselves to the misery of our the lives we created.

  • @1969JohnnyM
    @1969JohnnyM 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The original bass player in the video is Chas Chandler who famously took an unknown young African American who had been struggling as a backing guitarist to various club bands and who had already been rejected by a few major producers and paid for his flight back to London with him, paid for his lodgings and upkeep and then helped him form his own band and so he kelped audition a bass player Noel Redding and a drummer Mitch Mitchell and then after paying for space for them to practice then also got them their first gigs and paid for their recording time and for their first single out of his own pocket, using his friends in the music industry ensured the bands gigs in London were full of an A to Z of the British music scene, the single was 'Hey Joe' and it was a hit. Chandler had discovered and given Jimi Hendrix the help he needed and had helped create The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Chandler was Hendrix's manager for nearly all of his professional career and after Hey Joe he managed Hendrix to get a proper recording contract and saw to it that he avoided the many con men in the music industry at the time.

    What I love about this song is that even though this was recorded in 1964 it sounds like it could have been recorded today. The music just leaps out at you. And it's crazy how at 24 Eric Burdon had that lived in old guys voice and sounded like he'd lived the life he was singing about. Nothing recorded today can compare to just a great song, sung and played wonderfully and recorded with out cmputers or auto tune.
