  • Here's my 75th Anniversary salute to the landmark broadcast of "Sorry, Wrong Number" starring AGNES MOOREHEAD which was first broadcast in May of 1943. The version presented here is one of several "encore" broadcasts (but still performed live) SWN was done a total of seven times, and each broadcast starred Agnes Moorehead. This one is from 1948 as Suspense wanted to cash in on the publicity from the movie's release (I have a remastered version of the Classic Radio Theater broadcast in my BARBARA STANWYCK Playlist) I chose this particular one to present because out of the 7 productions this has the best sound quality and the overall production of this version is smooth. Also (it case you never heard about it) the actual very first broadcast in 1943 contains a huge blunder! At a very critical time at the end of the story, an actor spoke too soon. Plus, to make it worse he repeated the same line over again! Now remember that these were all LIVE BROADCASTS at the time. The next week the announcer on Suspense had to explain what happened to a confused audience, and they promised to do the show again. The first "do-over" was aired in August of 1943 so then FINALLY, broadcast history was made!
This presentation is a DIGITALLY REMASTERED version of the November 18, 1948 broadcast, plus there's no commercial breaks. The last one was in 1960 . . . That version was hacked down to only 22 minutes because of the commercials. EZ LINK #SorryWrongNumber
★NOTE - THIS IS A RECORDING OF THE ACTUAL 1948 LIVE BROADCAST, and has been DIGITALLY RESTORED, AND IS IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN. This upload (like all of my uploads) was obtained free of charge from a public website.

I created my channel to provide only the BEST EPISODES and with the best sound quality available. My channel is for your entertainment. It's not an encyclopedia, and not a resource guide. I am proud that these programs have a historical significance. Now and then I'll provide some interesting anecdotes (often with humor) and I'll pass on some facts that I DO KNOW . . . Plus maybe a little "useless trivia" now and then. I don't proclaim to know EVERYTHING about Suspense but do know quite a bit, as I've listened to EVERY EPISODE MULTIPLE TIMES, and I always screen it AGAIN after I've uploaded it. I'm the first to recognize that 2017 was seventy five years since the original broadcast!
    • Suspense radio episodes are all in the public domain. It's a fact that's true. • Every program has been " Uploaded with Care " by Charlie Stuckey • All of my uploads are presented in the best sound quality available today. • Digital restoration unselfishly done by Lum Edwards

What I love about SWN is that Lucille Fletcher made no attempt to soften the main character so that she would be more appealing. She is impatient, querulous, insulting, petty, imperious and irritating; in short, she is thoroughly human. This adds an extra dimension to the story, making it far more vivid and involving than it would otherwise be. No wonder Miss Moorehead performed it on nine separate occasions over the years.

To my knowledge, Lucille Fletcher wrote or assisted in all the various time-slot versions of "Sorry, Wrong Number". She was married to Bernard Herrmann who was oftentimes the musical director for many of these shows and later more famously known for his musical direction on Alfred Hitchcock's original movie version of "Psycho"

    • @SuspenseESCAPEremastered

Fletcher was a very productive writer. Suspense produced several of her stories. "The Thing in the Window" comes to mind. It was done twice, and I uploaded the Joseph Cotten version (probably because Cotten is one of my favorite actors) You'll find all of Joseph Cotten's episodes in one playlist. He is behind only Agnes Moorehead and Herbert Marshall, for making the most appearances on Suspense.

I have been listening to the 1 Hour versions of SUSPENSE. They are truly exceptionally done with Robert Montgomery hosting the shows.. "Love's Lovely Counterfeit" with James Cagney is a "forgotten gem" unknown to most people. "The House on the River" is another one as is "The Lodger" with Robert Montgomery playing the lead part. His accent is quite good. Jeanette Nolan is wonderful as always. I have the one Volume Radio Archives restored, but they only did 10 of the 1 hour shows. I hope they will eventually release all of the 1 hour versions in the future, as their work is truly exceptional.
Robert Montgomery was in the film "Ride the Pink Horse" released at about this same time period, as it is mentioned at the end of the show. It is an excellent film and has been restored through the Criterion Collection in their Film Noir series of motion pictures.

    • @SuspenseESCAPEremastered

I've always enjoyed the one hour versions, even if some of the stories are Do-overs. Bogart did the half hour Suspense version of "Counterfeit." Montgomery was a pretty good actor. I liked him in "Night Must Fall," both film and his radio adaptation. I also watch classic movies and have seen most! (I've seen so many, I find it difficult to find another!) Thanks again!

@@SuspenseESCAPEremastered The "Love's Lovely Counterfeit" version I have from Radio Archives Volume (which has 10 of the shows) stars James Cagney. I will have to look up the 30 minute Bogart version. It is very rare to hear James Cagney on a Radio Show. It was based on the James M. Cain novel of the same name. He also wrote "Mildred Pierce", and Joan Crawford won an Oscar for her movie performance in the role.
Orson Welles in one of his many interviews discusses Cagney and Garbo. Of course he is very complementary of both Actors. He felt James Cagney to be one of the best Actors of all time and Garbo the most unique and beautiful. He was also very complementary regarding Agnes Moorehead and John Barrymore.
At the end of "Love's Lonely Counterfeit" Robert Montgomery interviews James Cagney. It is a real thrill to hear such an accomplished actor in this role! Radio Archives has put out quite a few Volumes of SUSPENSE, but only their first one contains 10 of the 1 hour shows. I assume one day they will release others from that unique period. William Spiers speaks on most of them also.
Robert Montgomery set up the first video media office at the White House during the Eisenhower Administration. They actually gave him his own office there at the time. He had quite the Military record during World War II with his time in the Military Service which helped out immensely in the later military roles he starred. His early television show "Robert Montgomery Presents" is also quite well done. He also starred opposite Greta Garbo in her second talking picture "Inspiration".

@@SuspenseESCAPEremastered They are quite good. This one of SWN is exceptional. Very clear and so glad you gave it a 75th Anniversary, as it is right at the time of vintage radio shows. I have my favorites and SWN is one of them. So is "A Shipment of Mute Fate" and a few others are right at the top for me. I have collected from various sources over the years. Some good and some not so good but certainly better than the audio cassettes I purchased years ago. I started with Radio Archives several years back and because of cost buy now only when they have their sales, which is one or two monthly and the entire lot once a year generally before Christmastime. I have found some unique shows in their Archives Treasures series.
The Miriam Hopkins SWN is there as is a very unique show put out by the Zenith Radio Corp. called The Zenith Foundation. It is the only vintage radio show the Zenith Radio Corp. ever promoted. Zenith put out this show in national syndication across the Nation I think for only about a year (or less) in 1938 and to my knowledge only one show is still in existence held in the hands of collector's.
The President of Zenith, Commander Eugene MacDonald was interested in mental telepathy. This unusual show deals with telepathy and Zenith actually had free telepathy playing cards available at their dealerships across the Country for listener's to follow along with on the show. They would ask listener's to send in the results on Postcards from images they would have on the show including short dramatic stories dealing with mental telepathy. You can occasionally find these collectible card decks on Ebay. The results were tabulated through the Psychic Department at Duke University in North Carolina where I understand these old radio shows are hidden away in some dusty closet.
I was rather astounded Radio Archives has released so many forgotten radio shows in so short a time period, but it must be paying off.

Good stories and crystal clear sound. The only fault with The Chase is sound effects (cap guns instead of real guns with blanks, like CBS) I have personal obligations going on that will take me away from uploading for some time (still) I will upload when I have time. I have already provided all Escape episodes that aren't repeats, and essentially all of the best Suspense episodes. Miriam Hopkins flew to Australia in 1955 and opened the second season of the Australian LUX Radio Theatre with the rarely heard 60 minute version of "Sorry, Wrong Number". Interestingly Miriam Hopkins also opened the second season of LUX in the States in the 1930's (I think 1934 with Charles Farrell) in "Seventh Heaven".. She does a great job in SWN with the creme of Australian radio actors assisting with the story. The ending interview is also quite interesting. The audio quality is excellent with a great musical score. That version is more developed than the 30 minute versions so often heard on the US SUSPENSE radio program. The Miriam Hopkins 60 minute version is to my knowledge only available through Radio Archives (out of Spokane, WA) Archives Treasures Volume No. 23.
I wish Agnes Moorehead had done the 60 minute version at least once, but SUSPENSE was primarily in a 30 minute time-slot except for a brief time period in 1948 with Robert Montgomery hosting. SUSPENSE did re-issue some of the earlier shows in a 60 minute version (such as "The Lodger"), but "Sorry, Wrong Number" unfortunately was not one of the shows included in a 1 hour time slot. They could have added SWN to the 1 Hour shows but for some reason it was not included.
When you eventually do hear the Miriam Hopkins LUX Australian version you will know what I mean as the story just makes more sense with the same script written by Louise Fletcher in a longer length. SUSPENSE repeated several shows prior to their 1 Hour shows in 1948 and could have included SWN in the listings but obviously chose not to do so.

Miriam Hopkins did one episode of Suspense, which I uploaded (in May of 2018, I think) Naturally, I have all the one hour episodes in one playlist. They all have exceptional sound quality. When I was a kid, a neighbor had a record of SWN. The one hour Lodger is probably the best audio version, in my opinion. I've never heard Miriam Hopkins version of SWN, as it appears no one has made it available (free) on the internet. It's been sometime since I searched for it, however. Thanks again for sharing your info, I really do appreciate it and so do subscribers - Charlie

@@SuspenseESCAPEremastered The Miriam Hopkins Australian LUX version of "Sorry, Wrong Number" is not free on the Internet. As mentioned, it is only available through Radio Archives out of Spokane, WA on No. 23 Volume of their Archive Treasures series. The production values of the Australian LUX Radio Theatre were very high and compare well (if not better in many cases) to their American counterpart. As noted, it was aired from Australia in 1955.
The sound quality of the Hopkins version is exceptional and just sorry Agnes Moorehead did not also perform the 60 minute version, as it is simply a more developed story and also written by Louise Fletcher. Once you hear it, I feel sure you will be quite impressed with her performance.
SUSPENSE could (and should) have included it when they had Robert Montgomery hosting the 1 hour shows (as they did include some prior SUSPENSE 30 minute stories) in 1948, but sadly SWN was not one of them. I think Miriam Hopkins performed more on LUX than SUSPENSE, although she did perform on both shows.

@@richardmcleod5967 I find it interesting that Australian shows had good production standards. The same can not be said of South African radio dramas. I wonder if the Australian SWN is public domain. I'm not gonna pay (and can't anyway on a fixed income) for public domain programs. If it is public domain perhaps you can upload it to TH-cam. It's actually fairly easy to upload audio. One thing for sure, is I've learned that dealing with false copyright claims is a a pain, and I have to address them all. Its part of having a channel. I've had claims for 30 seconds of bumper music! You could start a channel featuring radio dramas from overseas, and pass along you're knowledge! There's always a niche to be filled. It took two years for my channel to get established. I got tired of others uploading programs without regard to quality, using the same cover-art or dull photo, and not providing any information whatsoever in the descriptions for 900 uploads. @@SuspenseESCAPEremastered I really have no idea how to upload a program but suppose I could learn. I do appreciate the artwork, history and additional information you give on your programs, including the exceptional audio quality. With this specific episode of SWN, you make note of which episode it was and the unusual mix-up in script on the first episode that was aired. This particular version of SWN is the best one I have heard given by Agnes Moorehead. Most people would not have known about that had you not mentioned it in your write-up on the site.
The production standards of Australian radio are truly exceptional from what I have heard so far. I had no idea they also had an Australian version of the LUX Radio Theatre, in very similar fashion to the one in the States. There is a woman (Fifi Banfare or something like that) who worked here in the States with early radio and moved to Australia working with Australian radio (on the executive side) and evidently became a legend over there as did George Edwards and his work on Australian Radio.
His "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" serial is exceptional. Radio Archives also offers that complete set which I have. George Edwards was known as the man with a thousand voices. There is a book on Fifi Banfare (sp?), so I will have to search deeper and get the correct name spelling, history and so forth.
I would assume these to be public domain programs with no restrictions on them as Radio Archives has it in their Archives Treasures series which is quite extensive from the shows they have in their collection. The SWN version is the only Australian one I have known included in their Archive Treasures series. I initially got the SWN from someone selling old radio shows out of Oregon years back. He is no longer in business. Then later Radio Archives put out the SWN Australian version from their LUX show with Miriam Hopkins in their Archive Treasures series Volume 23.
I do hope you can eventually hear it, just to get your ideas as to the quality and also Miriam Hopkins interpretation of the role. The introduction of the show along with the ending comment interview section is fascinating. Evidently Miriam Hopkins was the first American Star to fly (on Pan Am) over and perform on their radio version of Australian LUX Radio Theatre. They imply that with the opening comments of SWN in saying that this performance was of International importance! Also, one of the radio actors from that night's show would be selected and flown to Hollywood to star in I assume a LUX radio show.
Miriam talks about her flight over to Australia, how good the food was on the airplane, the stops she made including the Fiji Islands, how friendly the Australian people are and puts in a "plug" in for her friend Melvyn Douglas who was also in Australia performing at a local Sydney Theatre. And of course she is one of the 9 out of every 10 Film Stars who use LUX Soap! They also discuss the next week's show which was to be George Orwell's "1984" starring Vincent Price. I would love to hear that one.
These shows are rare and I only wish the man in Oregon was still in business as he had many radio shows from Australia. Just to get the LUX shows would be a real treat! At the time, I saw his ad he had really already gone out of business and was nice enough to make a copy of this version for me. I think he charged about $15.00. The Radio Archives Archives Treasures contain 20 CD's in each Volume. They charge $59.95 for each Volume. When On SALE they charge $29.95 for the Volume. They generally offer a sale at the end of the year, where everything is 50% off. That is when I buy from them. They do offer monthly sales but only on 2 or 3 of their 6 CD sets and a week to buy one of the latest Archives Treasures Volumes.
They are expensive but Jerry Haendiges is even more expensive and the quality of what I have purchased from him has not been very good and can't compare to the quality of the shows I have purchased from Radio Archives.

@@SuspenseESCAPEremastered Many of the 1 hour episodes of SUSPENSE hosted by Robert Montgomery were re-makes of previous 30 minute shows. The Lodger is a good example as is Donovan's Brain and maybe The Kandy Tooth. I wish they had also included the 60 minute SWN version with Agnes Moorehead when the 1 hour programs were being aired in 1948, but sadly it was not included in the unique grouping. That was a very special time for SUSPENSE and I find the 1 hour stories fully developed and well directed by Robert Montgomery. He was making "Ride the Pink Horse" at the time. "In a Lonely Place" also included in the 1 hour shows was also written by the same author. "A House by the River" (also in this 1 hour series of SUSPENSE programs) includes a wonderful performance by John McIntire, the husband of Jeanette Nolan.
I am rather surprised the 1 hour shows were not successful, but SUSPENSE went back to the 30 minute time slot and stayed that way until the last show was aired.

@@SuspenseESCAPEremastered The radio actors during the Golden Age of Radio oftentimes surpassed those on the Silver Screen. Jeff Chandler was an exception as he excelled in both radio and film. I think he is the voice of the Policeman in this version of SWN.

I noticed that the policeman character has a bit of an Irish accent. In the other versions of this story, I don't think he ever spoke that way. But then, of course, they always had different actors playing this part, as well as the other characters, with the exception of Mrs. Stevenson, who was always played by Agnes Moorehead.

@@michaelpalmieri7335 The repeated stories on the popular radio shows oftentimes changed around the Actors that played many of the different parts. In "A Shipment of Mute Fate", Jack Webb, John Lund and possibly others played the lead part as these programs were aired live. The same is true with many of the other repeat shows such as "The Man That Would Be King", Three Skeleton Key", and "Linogen and the Ants" to mention just three shows.
When Miriam Hopkins flew to Australia in 1955 for the Australian LUX Radio Theatre 60 minute version of "Sorry, Wrong Number', an all Australian cast worked with Miriam Hopkins playing the lead role of Mrs. Stevenson. All of the SUSPENSE versions with Agnes Moorehead are in the 30 minute version and I feel sure had varying Actors in each version.

The first hint was that she called her husband’s work phone and that conversation happened. That was no accident. If she only called back the exact number.
