Hi, this is Dr. Buck Parker, General Surgeon, and in this article I want to talk to you about the diagnosis of Acute Appendicitis. Acute Appendicitis is when the appendix (a small finger like projection with a blind pouch that lives in the right side of the abdomen) becomes infected. The reason the appendix becomes infected is because it usually gets obstructed or blocked off at the base. After the appendix is obstructed, the bacteria that naturally live in the appendix do what they do best, and reproduce at a very rapid rate. Since the appendix is blocked off, and it's a blind ending pouch, there is no where for the bacteria to go, so the appendix gets bigger and bigger until eventually...without surgery, it will burst and stool will spill into the abdomen. The appendix gets blocked off for many different reasons, but I now want to focus on how doctors diagnose appendicitis, and then how we treat it.
First the diagnosis is usually a constellation of symptoms such as abdominal pain, fevers, chills, maybe nausea and vomiting. These symptoms although common, may or may not be present. Most people have belly pain that starts around the navel, and moves slowly over several hours to the right lower abdomen. When you have appendicitis, it will not get better on its own, so if the pain goes away, then most likely the diagnosis is not appendicitis.
Some tests are very helpful in diagnosing appendicitis. First, is a blood test to check for the white blood cell count. If the white blood cells (or the infection fighting cells) are elevated, that is a good indication that there is inflammation or an infection going on somewhere. Secondly is an ultrasound. The ultrasound is particularly helpful in women, since a problem with the ovary on the right side can cause similar symptoms to an appendicitis. Sometimes the ultrasound will show a normal appendix, and an abnormal ovary (such as a benign cyst for example) that will confirm the problem is not an appendicitis. Sometimes the ultrasound can confirm that the appendix looks abnormal and together with the other signs and symptoms, the diagnosis can be made. And finally, a CAT scan or a CT scan of the abdomen may be used to look at the appendix. The CAT scanner is like an X-ray machine that can look at bones, muscles, blood vessels and solid organs like the liver and even the appendix. Depending on your symptoms, all or some of these tests will be used.

I was 5 years old when had appendicitis I woke up one morning vomiting, real bad stomach pain, cramps. The next day my parents too me to the hospital to be admitted for an appendectomy. I remembered being rushed for surgery. My appendix ruptured the surgeon told my parents "It was up too god too let me live" but somehow I made it, the recovery was slow but then I developed an infection. But I made it, and god gave me a second chance too live. I'm tearing up just typing my experience with appendicitis. I was young to remember it then, but my mom told about it, and I couldn't believe what I went through, but I've fine ever since then.
Hi, I’m 63 and had my appendix removed just 5 days ago! I had this terrible pain in my tummy on the Monday, went home and had uncontrollable shivering. Went to Urgent Care and the sent me home with Paracetamol!! Took it easy on the Tuesday but went for another check up Tuesday evening with a different GP. He suspected a kidney infection or possible appendicitis but it’s very rare for a 63 year old to have appendicitis apparently. Went for an ultrasound scan on Wednesday afternoon and Radiology told me to go to the hospital immediately. Hospital did a CT Scan to make sure nothing else was happening as well. Lots of IV antibiotics and operated with laparoscopic procedure Tuesday lunchtime. Spent about 30 hours in Intensive Care and home on the Saturday! It all happened so quickly and I never would have thought. I think I was just very lucky I had the ultrasound scan when I did.
About 6 weeks ago I came down with severe stomach pain, cramps, constipation and general bowel fuckery. After 2-3 weeks of dealing with that, I finally went in to my doctor and she referred me to the ER. They had trouble diagnosing me in the ER because I was not presenting like a case of appendicitis even though they were reasonably sure that's what was wrong with me. But since I'd had the condition for several weeks, they were in awe that the appendix had not ruptured. They treated me with antibiotics and repeated CT scans and still found the appendix was inflamed even after the treatment. So finally they decided to remove it (had this done last Tuesday). They had been telling me there was a "cell mass" in my colon that was of concern (according to CT scan), but when they went in there, they found no evidence of the mass, and said maybe it was a "mucus mass". Glad to have the appendix out but still not sure how it was that I got an infection in my appendix without the blockage or rupture.

For all those wondering if they have appendicitis, let me tell you about the pain. It is so bad that you're doubled over in a ball. It's not just a bad stomach ache or pulled abdominal muscle. On a pain scale of 1-10 it's an 11. If you're rolled in a ball with terrible pain in your belly button or lower right side, GET TO THE HOSPITAL IMMEDIATELY, before you're appendix bursts!
I had appendicitis and the pain was very mild for me! 😂 I was still able to go to work but it was a constant dull sometimes sharp burning pain.

@@billnyilas8 Yes, I had my appendix removed about 1 month ago. Strangely I also had a burst ovarian cyst the week before the surgery and the resulting blood/fluid in my abdomen apparently irritated the appendix (and my liver). I am glad the doctors decided to operate even though I did not have the typical symptoms of an appendicitis.

i had my appendix rupture a few months ago (In March, got surgery). the only way i knew that i had Appendicitis is that i passed out infront of my dad mid-sentence. I am alright now, and i still have the scars from the surgery.

I’m wondering if I have this or a possible hernia? As I do life 30-50lbs on the daily with my job. I don’t have the standard lump of a hernia and the pain comes and goes for me. I feel it near my belly button all the way down to my groin and right thigh

Hi 👋 Iam 60 years Black female started intermittent fasting n keto July21 until last day 9/2/2020 I only eat 1 meal a day on 9/3/2020 started having a lot of gas expelling and pain in my right side and sharp pain under my belly button lower abdominal
I'll be feeling like on my right side it burns a little bit I feel like somebody's poking me with needles sometimes just wondering if it's my appendicitis I might have to go to the doctor and check that out

Xxale Xx Well, that night I was having lots of pain I really thought it was appendicitis, and I was hesitant to go to ER because I’m scared of getting COVID19 😒😔 But anyway after a few hours of horrible pains it just went away and have not felt it again. Thank God! 🙏
Wide Awake did they tell you what it was ? I’ve been experiencing pain , it comes back and it goes away . I’ve been having that pain for 3 years but i haven’t gotten checked , i was going to go last month but the covid 19 cases are rising up in Texas . I’m glad you’re okay! Take care

Dr.Parker I did my surgery for appendicitis after 1 day take shower its ok doc?or no?
Had my appendectomy about two weeks ago via laproscopic procedure.. but now when I pee I get pain in my bladder or above my pelvic (note there is 1 of 3 small incision in that region

I got this discomfort/pressure like feeling in my pelvic area/naval. It's kinda as if I had a poop stuck in there or an unfinished pee, and after sitting or doing things for a while I begging to feel cramp like pains on my sides, kinda by the kidney and abdomin. I can use the restroom fine and pee fine and after using the restroom the discomfort flees for a while then it's back. I only got worried after eating and smoking I felt sort of hear and cramp like pain in my abdominal but then it went away.. what is going on. I'm hoping it's not this but it may very well be. It's been 3 days now that I feel this discomfort but it feels way better after waking up and gets uncomfortable through out the day.

What does it mean to have your appendix mildly enlarged? My doctors seem to think it's nothing to worry about. I live in central pa and healthcare isn't the best here so I was curious if this was truly accurate. If it is then do I go back for a follow up scan to make sure it's still good? Thanks for any help.

My pain is on the left, and it didn't start in my navel either. I moved some furniture the day before yesterday. I may over taxed that muscle and it has come back to haunt me. No good goes unpunished. Relieved that it is not likely my appendix.Thanks for the info.

Its been 11 days after my operation, and from past 2 days I am feeling pain in the area where my appendix was. It mostly hurts at night. Is it something to worry about

Hello my name is Rudabe and 2 months ago I went to Ct scan and phisical examination of my apendix I had discomfort in my right abdomen but it was not pain and it come and go in minutes, the doctors said that there is not problem it is just from my overies but somtimes I am feeling pain there after two months of CT scan, I wanted to say I have Anxiety and I am feeling bodly sensations and pain during my panic attacks or Anxiety attacks and mostly pain is hapening during midnight and I don't have any other symptoms somtimes I am feeling upset in my stomake but it is when I am feeling piercing there and starting to panic about my apendix, I am a teneager and apendix operation is common in my age even when the possiblity of getting apendix infaction is 10% I am really scared of my apendix to get rupture and of the operation. What should I do is it real apendix infaction or just panic attack?.
I also get panic attacks. I would say really listen to your body. If the pain is on the right side of the stomach or the middle of the stomach when you are NOT having a panic attack GO TO THE HOSPITAL. Better to be safe than sorry! Tell me how it goes!
I am traveling right now and I can not go to hospital unfortenetly and that makes my panic even worse I have done Ct scan 2 months ago and I I am still worrying even I have our family doctor and conculer which are saying theres is nothing to worry about but I am still worrying and panicikng every night it is real tourture and hell when I am on an airplane the pain become worst and panic become more intense. Hi Doctor. Plz tell me that what should I do.Last month I went to hospital because I had a pain in my right lower. So I had a ultrasound, blood test, and urine test. But the doctor told me that my appendix is okay. Just it is inflammed with fluid. So they gave me a medication. But after 1 week I have a pain in the same area. From Friday I have pain. And it is more painful than before It doesn't stop paining. Continuously paining. So what should I do. Please tell me
Sieun 8234 ...I hope you went back to the hospital. I had same pains they did same test and and see nothing... it's only when they did the ct scan (last resort test)it showed my appendix inflamed and they rushed me to surgery. Hope you're good now
Does it have anesthesia during operation?
Steve Slayer anesthesia will be applied to your veins (via IV tube), just like with any other surgery. It isn't as bad as it seems, since doctors will place a drug in you to forget EVERYTHING about (and shortle prior) the surgery anyways.
hi i'm 17 i woke up this morning and i have these really sharp pains in my lower right side of my stomach and if i lay down and breath in deep it hurts or if i get up and walk it hurts sometimes. but i haven't had any of the other symptoms yet. and the pain will go sometimes for maybe 5 minutes and come back i'm really worried.
hi.... I'm 11 and I have the same symtoms as you... Try taking some medicine... It also may be just a horrible cramp. I understand that you are worried and I am too but try getting some rest and take some medicine.. I hope you get better.. :)

I have Appendicitis operation 6-7 years back . But I have pain in that area sometimes . And also now have severe joint pain.
Raj the surgery shouldn't cause any of your symptoms... i would recommend going to a doctor, but you can ignore me

Raj your welcome, Raj. I hope you will feel better soon. I had appendicitis a few months ago (in March) and besides the fact that i couldn't do any major exercises (mountain biking, paintball, etc) for a few weeks, i feel alright. sorry for the late response to your initial comment, though.

I had a pain in the middle of my stomach, then it moved to both right and left side, now it has moved to the right side just under and beside my belly button. It is increasing in pain and it has been going on for almost 3 days. I’m not sure if it is appendicitis or not. I haven’t been eating and I’ve thrown up quite a few times.
Please at least go see your doctor.

So I woke up around 3 in the morning yesterday, I was having stomach pain and went to use the bathroom, when I sat down to use the bathroom I started to get VERY painful cramps, which made me vomit, I waited a few minutes and went to attempt to use the bathroom again but the cramps came back and were very painful . I ended being able to use the bathroom and felt better after. I still have a little weird feeling in my stomach, should I be worried?
So any update?

Hi, So I just woke up and I stood up and started walking and I had horrible pain to the lower right side of my stomach... When i walk it hurts.... I even took some medicine and it still hurts really bad.. i Don't think anything happened to my appendix because i would've probably been in more pain but i'm really worried.... Please help.... :( If anyone might know what to do please reply!
I suggest call the advice nurse, or go to urgent care.

does having appendicitis makes your abdomen growl,having tenderness,drum sound when you tapping it,burping and farting loudly, It doesn't hurt so much but its uncomfortable, it's like i want to have a big fart
