What is Dry Farming? + Food Preservation Tips from Busy Farmers

  • The outrageous reality of farming is that when we are at our busiest, the farm is exploding with food-food that, indeed, we would love to have in the winter when we are at our least busy, least diverse in the garden, and-speaking personally-we have our best beer belly. I need that belly though to protect me from the cold wind and from respect when I’m out shopping. Sheep get wool, I get beer fat. I think it’s only fair. Anyway, today’s vlog is about dry farming and about canning/freezing tips from a busy farmer. Also I almost cuss for the second video in a row. Maybe the third time. Almost cussing is okay. It’s kinda my spirit animal. Wendell also.

I stopped blanching my corn and green beans a few years ago. Just clean, dry and freeze (vacuum sealed). We have green beans that have been frozen for 3 years and still taste amazing.

Great work. Thanks so much. Loved the comments about the dry farm crops, potato, sweet potato, garlic, squash.

Results of research completed at Michigan State University and replicated in the USA and other countries have shown that SWRT subsurface membrane technology doubles the water holding capacity of coarse textured soils. Dramatic increases in biomass and crop production are possible and expected when more soil moisture is available throughout the growing season. #irrigation, #waterconservation, #agricultural

You would be able to dry farm summer lettuce in shade (underneath trees/ bushes for example) and making sure the whole ground is green including pathways.

good point. we dryland farm in cali. Not fully up north near sac. We get almost no rain lol. Mulch, Mulch, Mulch. Cheap, most of the time it's free. If you get more rain to watch out for slugs with all that mulch which happen to us one year. We still came out ahead though with all that mulch it's your friend. We just switch to compost instead of leaves and twig mulch. Compost is harder to get slugs and snails. pay attention to your weather. God knows it's been weird as heck. Very good point. We are highly undermulched all across americas small farms and gardens.

Very cool videos!! I'm a translator specialized in development, mostly ag, and came here just to brush up on techniques, terminology, etc. Just one suggestion, you might want to check out the possible health risks of freezing food in plastic. I try to use glass - it freezes just fine, doesn't break with the cold...

Here in Japan, all field crops are dry farmed.

1 gram of stable soil carbon makes it possible for the soil to hold 20 grams of water

Thanks for another awesome vid farmer Jessie! I’m new to the channel and can say after watching quite a few of your videos, that I’m hooked :). I had a question regarding your cover crop. How do you seed them, (ie drill seeder, push seeder, broadcast, etc)? Thanks again for all the time you invest in bringing informative and just plain awesome content!

Thank you and thanks for watching. We just push a seeder for cover crops. Would like a better way to broadcast but haven't found anything in our system

As soon as your soil health is balanced, your soil will harvest and retain it's own water.
