They may be overwhelmed but SOMEONE at the hospital, an office worker or such, should step up and gather names. The poor families! I’m still trying to track down friends and family who live or work in Lewiston.
It takes time. Unfortunately - there's no way to get out a quick "list" because when you do this- people end up notified that thier loved ones are gone- when it's a mistake. Law enforcement has to do thier best to not destroy the scenes while identifying the dead. Not everyone dies with thier driver's license in thier pocket - making it easy to identify them. You can't just let people into the scene to confirm thier identities. It takes HOURS to individually remove the bodies from the site without destroying evidence- often all night or day in mass casualty events. And that's when the perpetrator is KNOWN to be caught or dead- they certainly aren't going to begin moving bodies when they don't even know where this maniac is yet. It's horrendous, but the best hospitals can do is identify who they DO have in thier care. I've done death notifications for dozens of families - it's not something you do quickly, over the phone, or without great care- my own family was MISINFORMED about the death of my NEPHEW last year.. . Only to find out while I'm on the phone with the medical examiner who was still on the scene.... It was my 49 year old brother and NOT my 22 year old nephew. The car he died in - was REGISTERED to my brother, at his address, and he had his driver's license in his pocket. He pulled into a turn lane...had a massive heart attack and died- not even having time to put the car in park. He was found slumped over the wheel. And yet when four cops and a chaplain showed up at MY PARENTS HOUSE- they told us my 22 YEAR OLD red headed, freckled NEPHEW was dead - NOT my long brown haired -49 year old brother. We demanded to know why they were notifying US - the AUNT and GRANDPARENTS and why they weren't at HIS HOUSE notifying his parents!! The cops rushed to the other town... Only to find my nephew standing at the door- very much alive. I was the one who figured out who it must have been - and I had to make the notification to my own mother, as i got the info from a confused M.E. on the phone. That's NOT how a death notification should happen. You might think it's "a relief" to find out someone you were told is dead- is not dead - but i assure you- it's NOT. People should be able to trust law enforcement when they are given that god-awful news. I'm sure they are doing thier absolute best to notify families as quickly as possible - but remember - even if the police DID identify the victims.... If the family is running from hospital to hospital - scene to scene - the police may have trouble location then to make a notification. And they absolutely prefer NOT to do it over the phone, which is good - they shouldn't be doing it over the phone. Many people have severe reactions that may require medical or religious support - and they deserve to have those people present when they get the worst news of thier lives.
My heart goes the victims families and hope the rest struggling for their lives can make it stronger out of this tragedy. Please God protect humanity from evil.
