I'm really trying to get my 6.5 year old 50" boy a awesome custom bike. It was a dream as a kid to have an awesome BMX bike but my Dad died when I was young. My day was the Redlines, Robinsons, Haros
An obvious issue with size charts in this respect is that they naturally refer to the average physiology. Not everybody fits that mould. Some people have a disproportionately large amount of their height in the upper body whereas some other people are the opposite way insofar as having disproportionately long legs for their height. So one 6ft tall guy might have a 30" inseam whereas another 6ft tall guy might have a 34" inseam. The same bike would feel very different to each guy.
Am 5ft7 i tried my sons 20,5 Mirraco edit. Felt really crap (could be my body geometry that male has vs female. Shorter legs compare to upper body). So i bought a 20,75 - its really night and day. A 20,5 feels really like a kid bike or like the bear on a circus - 20,75 feels more natural.
What do I get my 7 yr old boy -- he's approx 48in. I used to ride just the OG bikes in the 80s and 90s -- started at 8... rode different bikes until college -- have no idea what is a good bike these days - seems like most bikes are made with crappy aluminum -- and gone are the days of 100% CM frames unless you spend north of $600+ ... Won't aluminum frames bend when riding hard? Guess it forces you to buy new bikes when you break or bend them... What companies are decent these days that still make quality bikes with quality parts? To give perspective -- I used to ride: GT HARO ROBINSON REDLINE PK TORKER ELF DK SKYWAY DYNO HUTCH back in the day when these 'were' the bikes to be riding -- I have yet to see any evidence that there are any companies left today that come close to the quality that these bikes had for hard use. Suggestions?
I bought a kink gap 2022, I'm 5'5 and bought based on your guide ! still getting used to the bike (:
