I am not Catholic, but I (and many other non-Catholics) always saw the sisters in their habits as a great witness. Just to see nuns walking by somewhere in public reminded people of the Lord & convicted them of what they might be doing with their own lives at that moment. It was kind of like when Jesus said “The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.”
I just saw the video of the St. Anne shrine. Then I saw this video and wanted to know more about this Order of nuns. I am also disappointed that they decided that distinction wasn’t important! As we can see today, it’s more important than ever. Man should not dress like a woman. 🤮
The day the Sisters and Nuns did away with the respective habits, is when they started to lose lots of vocations. I highly recommend that all Religious Men and Women return to wearing the original Habits of their respective Orders and Congregations. The Habit is your Armour, Helmet, Sheild, and the cinture of Chastity. It was the sign of your consecration, your Vows to God. The Habit Rosaries representing the Holy Gospels was your Sword for spiritual battles. Protestants have asked me "whatever happened to your Religious, we don't see them anymore?" I cannot lie, so I tell them the truth. Protestants do miss seeing Catholic Nuns wearing their Habits. Look to Mother Angelica's example of her Cloistered Community returning to their original habits of the Order, and when that happened, Vocation inquiries were coming in, and recent years, Mother Angelica founde two more Monasteries, and one of them is outside of Phoenix Arizona, just north of me.
Vatican II advised communities to go back and renew based on the founders charism. At no time were religious told to take off the habit. Habits are a visible sign of consecrated religious life and attract new members.
Vatican 2 said they were supposed to modify the habits not take it off also Cannonball I think it's 244 that they are supposed to wear the habit it just the American nuns that don't want to wear the habit they don't teach no more in Catholic schools anymore they live in apartments where is the power of poverty
I’ve heard these explanations many times over the years. They are unconvincing. At no time did Vatican II decree to abandon the habit completely and wear secular clothes. A Benedictine Abbot once remarked to me about the orders who abandoned the habit “they’ve lost their integrity “
The communities of religious women that wear habits are growing and the rest are dying. Whether they like it or not, that veil demands instant Respect and gives them status. No little pin is going to do that.
@SistersofprovidenceOrg you're right. Perhaps this remedied an issue of the times. In 1965, innovation was needed. In 2024, that anchor to tradition is needed. Habits have adapted throughout the history of the church and will no doubt change in the future. Peace and love to you, from a Muslim. :)
sister should all wear their habits or a modern habit I think in canon law 266 says did the religious people are supposed to wear their habit look it up and see what you think of it it's just the American nuns that don't do it
@@ginterka381996 I wonder if Jesus would have approved of your using the word "feminazis" to describe these dedicated and selfless women, simply because you disagree with their decision on the wearing of the habit.
Thank you for this video. I've always wondered why instead of abandoning the habit altogether, sisters did not come up with a compromise solution. They could have kept the traditional habit for Sundays and Feast Days, had a modified habit for work days, and then street clothes for relaxing at home. Do you have any insight on why communities did not do that?
I am not certain, but I am aware that looking at our roots, the sisters in their beginning wore the clothes of the common people, but wore black like the widows. So that was common clothing with a small twist.
They have not a clue that many communities of women are tragically unraveling. The communities that are growing are wearing habits. Why would a young woman join a community of Sisters who don’t want to witness who they are by the way they dress.
The sisters don’t seem like a bride of Christ in jeans & jog pants. The sisters seem more worldly out of a habit, just like lay people. The dignity of the outward sign in the world today is really needed. God bless you & your work.
I’m sorry , Sister but you can’t get away from the fact that the habit (modified or not ) is a witness in the world to God Every part of that habit that was abandoned meant something about that daily consecration.and connected you with the long history of the Sisters who served heroically
But they can't recognize the habit and how it shows the sister's vows and consecration to Jesus. It's important to note that the most thriving orders are young and have traditional habits. There's the Nashville Dominicans are about 150 years old and they have habits, I don't get the point about how only newer orders have habits...
I respect the work of sisters who wear plain clothes, but sorry, I can't totally accept them as nuns. We recognize and respect other people's vocations (police, fire, military etc.), by their outward uniform attire. I am sure these modern nuns do good work, but so do a lot of social workers. Nuns were always special, and we knew from their habit that they were, and deserved instant respect. Perhaps I am being old-fashioned, but I question the religious commitment of nuns who want to look like everyone else. The habit is not about "status". it is a sign to the world of the religious vocation. If a priest came on to the altar in jeans and tee shirt, I'd walk out, and I suspect most everyone else would too. It would show a lack of respect for the vocation, in my opinion. This is not a personal attack on Sister Marilyn, who I am sure is a good person; just expressing my opinion as a long time Catholic.
But it was better with the habit. Sister Ann Gabriel was our principal and she always wore it and everyone respected her for it even when she slapped us.
Well these days we live our vocations not by our clothes but by our loving actions. You won't find us slapping children, fortunately. Our lived and loving ministries and nonviolence is what God is calling us to. Actions matter.

Not wearing the habit and wearing the clothes of the people is the exact reason the Church has secular institutes, which are a beautiful witness. They are called to be a leaven for the world from within the world. The Church states in numerous documents that Religious, however, are to wear the habit. In case you aren't familiar with Church teaching, I'll list the actual teaching & references here: St. John Paul II in Essential Elements of Religious Life (34) - To ensure this public witness, religious willingly accept a pattern of life that is not permissive but largely laid down for them. They wear a religious garb that distinguishes them as consecrated persons, and they have a place of residence which is properly established by their institute in accordance with common law and their own constitutions. - Index - §37. Religious should wear the religious garb of the institute, described in their proper law, as a sign of consecration and a witness of poverty (can. 669.1). St. John Paul II in Vita Consecrata (25) - "Since the habit is a sign of consecration, poverty and membership in a particular Religious family, I join the Fathers of the Synod in strongly recommending to men and women religious that they wear their proper habit, suitably adapted to the conditions of time and place." And last, but not least, the Code of Canon Law! - Can. 669 §1. Religious are to wear the habit of the institute, made according to the norm of proper law, as a sign of their consecration and as a witness of poverty. (And just in case you read ahead to the next canon - clerics are priests, not sisters! Example of this is the Jesuits who don't have a proper habit, so they are called to wear traditional priestly garb!) §2. Clerical religious of an institute which does not have a proper habit are to wear clerical dress according to the norm of ⇒ can. 284.

You know who you are but do others? What a ridiculous statement. Calling yourself a sister but looking like the neighbor lady next door is disgraceful. If you dress like an ordinary woman who simply does "good works" then why be in religious life at all? You may as well be a social worker or a volunteer at a hospital. As a religious, you are to be a witness, a sign that Christ is with us. That teenie tiny pin is nice but any woman can wear that. The HABIT is easily recognizable and absolutely a part of your job as a sister. To shrug it as meaningless is , with all due respect, pure nonsense. The habit is meant to remind the world that God is here among us, that a day without prayer is one without nourishment, that the Mass is the foundation to a life well lived, and that there are those in the world who's life work is to bring us the Truth of God without even saying a word. Wear the habit sister, wearing it will help save more souls than you could ever imagine
