Maybe you tried Axel at launch and he was trash… he’s been buffed a lot since then.

Blown away by the run, and it's only made better by the wonderful runner and commentator. I've also been tremendously impressed with how well this team has revived Streets of Rage! Definitely picking up the DLC.
The secret to this run: skill, practice, and NO FEAR OF DEATH.

As a casual player I thought Cherry made sense for the speedrun because she can run. Then I saw those boss combos...
Cherry still has the fastest speedrun time (41 min) by 3 minutes over the 2nd fastest (Blaze and Floyd at 44 min), other than Shiva3 (37 min.)
yeah, she was balanced before the patch, but they gave her way too many damage and combo buffs. I wonder if they'll revisit her once the dlc comes out

Fun facts.
SGDQ 2020 was using the earlier day 1 patch build.
SGDQ 2021 (this video) is using the September 2020 balance patch which buffed Cherry's damage output on both grounded/aerial guitar slams and head pummels. Plus her down air has OTG properties.
Her only nerf was toning down her full jab combo damage by a few points and has harder knee loops timing which is not a problem thanks to head pummel loops.
The balance patch made stage 12 harder by removing the spike ball in Big Ben's section (plus adding more waves), giving Ms Y more health + moves and the damage requirement for starting phase 2 robot was increased by nearly double the amount plus the robot's attacks are not longer restricted on the number of Y twins fighting.
On the flipside the robot takes a lot more damage per hit and the player starts the level with 50% yellow/green instead of like 30% yellow, 70% green.
31:00 is just bliss. The juggles, the music, everything.

It's really a testament to the brilliant score system of the game that a speedrun looks like a normal pts run.
At least for the first 2 until stage 3 when he lets a Galsia hit him to get a better time in on Nora.
