What got me was seeing Yoko and Linda just sitting there smiling and talking to each other like friends while the guys were working across the room. That really was a different view of Yoko that most people, I think, needed to see... probably should have seen decades ago.
At the same time, I feel like it didn't sanitise anything with her at all either.
@@BonJoviBeatlesLedZep how not? I feel like it did. It showed that anytime she in any way participated or took up space in the beatles, was when everyone was goofing around and experimenting anyway. Rest of the time, she's just a silent presence.
@@BomimoDK Yeah, you see all the girlfriends showing up, even that kid Heather, so it wasn't like Yoko was the only girlfriend there. Yoko just liked sitting closer to John, but stayed quiet. At the end, we also see how the creative differences and working style were the real problem. They seemed to have a problem deciding which direction to take, where to have the show, whether have in the open or in a ballroom, tv, documentary, etcetera. It was very for one Beatle to bail if he didn't like how things were going. George and John almost left because of Paul´s control over the arrangements. Having a Band is in and of itself difficult. Yoko was just there to sit next to John.
@@omgtkseth and yet the problem deciding where to have the show, Yoko had many a conversation and participated in. It's on the Nagra tapes. Yoko was silent when they were playing, of course she was. And how is it so revelatory that her and Linda were talking and laughing together? They all got along fine, it's what was said when they were apart that was the problem. None of that was in the movie. That doesn't mean I'm anti or pro Yoko, the real story has been there all along.
I just finished watching the whole 8-9 hours and never got bored once.

It's not about a band breaking up. It's about creative tension trying to make an album under the gun and being nervous about performing live again. As soon as the concert started it was all smiles.
True. Let It Be was released last but Abbey Road was the last album they did together. So sad, they left their best until last.

@@garywarren5048 You see how much Paul loves to perform, and the Beatles are the only band that he knows to do that with (and Paul is a strict monogamist when he's truly in love), so the joy just shines from Paul during the concert. He is in his element. They all are having fun up on the Roof, the communal pleasure among them all is palpable, but it seems to matter most to Paul.
I loved how nervous they were when they started playing, and a how a few bars in they are all loving every moment of playing together for an audience again
The most heartbreaking part is how everyone just took Ringo for granted. The day after George left he came into the studio, sat down
and was basically ignored while everyone around him speculated on the fate of the Beatles.
This doc gave me a new appreciation for Ringo. He always showed up. I can see why Jackson would have cast him as Sam in a Beatles LOTR.
Honestly, I think that's why he was such a perfect fit for the band. You can see in the documentary that George was starting to feel the need to spread his creative wings. Up to that point though the creative drive came from John and Paul. I can't imagine that The Beatles would have been so prolific and revolutionary if the 4 of them all fought to stand out. Ringo was that silent and steady force that the band could rely on like the comment below says, he always showed up. After the split, he went on and was able to flourish creatively and create great solo music. He was amazing at knowing his role at any given time, and giving it his all.
This documentary solidified my view of Ringo as an absolutely rock solid professional musician. He shows up to rehearsal on time, plays his parts to fit the song, and he listens to his bandmates. He's exactly the type of bandmate most people would kill to have in their group.
When I watched "Get Back" with my husband we said Peter Jackson wants the viewer to feel as though they were in the studio with the Beatles.
To be fair, it’s the people that filmed it 50 years that wanted that hence the secret mics and all the cameras

My pleasure Kasia. And just in case you didn't know The Beatles have the 8 hour Anthology and its separate 8 hour directors cut as well as the "Let It Be" movie (1970) and the original "Get Back" documentary released in 2005.
We can never get too much of The Beatles. I've got about 80 DVD's and 150+ books on them and I'm only a big fan not a mega fan 😂

_Get Back_ is a seven hour masterpiece. An astonishing, beautifully intimate document.
Colbert says he could watch all the raw footage, and I concur: treat it like a Warhol film, run it day-by-day on that day’s anniversary, treat it like wallpaper for the three weeks as the Beatles lived it. Not to watch the whole thing obsessively, but to be in their presence. Give them their own channel for three weeks every year-there will always be different bits to discover.

It truly did feel like time traveling back into literally the one place I'd wanna go back to and observe. Massive fan of the Beatles like many here. The restoration quality is absolutely exceptional.
How to you compare it to The Beatles Anthology?
@@kerryn6714 IMO you can’t compare the two, the Beatles Anthology it’s a complete history of the each member and also the group as a whole. Get Back is a behind the scenes look into what their relationship was like. It clears a lot of rumors and what is left is just four guys being masters of their craft. I think the Anthology and Get Back complement each other, once we thought the ending was sad and full of turmoil and now we finally realize the end was just a logical step into their personal lives as grown men.
If you like this whole restoration thing I suggest you watch Peter Jackson's other documentary They Shall Not Grow Old. He restored ww1 footage similar to The Beatles footage to tell a story. It's a great documentary if you have an interest in world war history.

It's the perfect Fly-on-the-Wall documentary. There's no commentary, no opinion; it's just what happened, as it happened. Sometimes it lags, and nothing happens, but those empty moments also say so much.
There's the one sequence that sticks out to me, when the band are in the middle of a day of doing nothing. They're just laying around, aimlessly. You can see Paul is getting frustrated, John isn't giving a F##k, George is painfully conspicuous by his absence, and Ringo is picking up on the stress. Then, all of a sudden, Peter Sellers walks in. Now, you think something would happen, but *Nothing Happens.* And you can tell even Sellers is like "Jesus, who died?" and walks off in a very uncomfortable awkwardness. And it's a moment so unflinchingly, cringingly *Real,* that speaks volumes about the crisis point the band is in at that moment.
The way I read it was that John was nervous about meeting one of his heroes, and gets cocky and kind of in Sellers' face. Sellers, being weird and antisocial, doesn't know hot to react, so he shuffles around awkwardly and then makes a quick exit. I even believe there's a last shot of John and I interpreted he's thinking "Jesus, John, why do you have to be such an arse sometimes?"
The scene doesn’t really reflect what actually happened. John & Sellers started joking around doing funny voices for a while and chit-chatting apparently.
It sure didn't help that the Beatles were doing their patented Beatle Humour, just improvising lines and jokes and singing the whole time they were sat there, and the sorta socially awkward Sellers seemed overwhelmed by it all.
Michael lindsay-hogg is the true hero of the story. Was very bold of him to sneak those audio recorders and leave the cameras secretly recording, the amount of historical information he preserved is priceless.
Agreed, but kinda messed up for him to portray it the way he did because he didn't get his final concert he wanted.

I remember the day John was killed. I was putting on my boots getting ready to go to work when the news came over the radio. I stopped. Sat very still in shock and disbelief, then they repeated the news. I could not function after that, had to call in sick and spent the entire day listening to Beatle records and bawling like a baby. 😭😭😭😢😢😢Even now at 70 I'm getting a little teary just recalling the memory. 😎

I wasn't born yet when John was killed, but the news of George dying affected me in a way no other celebrity death has ever affected me. I can't imagine what it was like with John and the way it happened.
@@noonehere0987 I'm in the same boat as you. I was a teenager watching Conan when the news of George's death came up on the screen. I was in shock... couldn't watch the rest of a comedy show after that.
My Dad recently said that he didn't think he would ever truly get over John's death.
As a massive Tolkien, Beatles, Daily Show/Colbert fan- this feels like all my favorite things coming together. I love it!

As a musician and composer (and a not so good songwriter), watching Paul pull Get Back from ether was one of the most humbling and amazing things to see. Their creative process is entirely different from my own. The way they get the melodies and then fit words to them rather than getting words and fitting a melody to them is just alien to me, and something I want to try out. Getting melodic themes is "easy." Getting harmonies is "easy." Writing melodic themes to words is tricky, but getting melodic themes first that end up fitting words like the Beatles do is... something unreal to me.
And then the part where they get into an argument with George, he leaves for the night and comes back with I, Me, Mine is also so remarkably fascinating. It was always obvious what the lyrics were about, but seeing the action (arguments) and consequence (that song) be so immediate was something else. I thought it was so on the nose they'd get into an argument over it, but whether they recognized right away what it was about or not, they just let it roll and played along with the song.
This is one of the best documentaries I've seen, and can't wait to watch it over the years for inspiration.
It's a common way for people who don't compose with notation to write songs. I do it, most rock bands did it. You bash away on your instrument, babble, and sometimes good things bubble up from the unconscious, or whatever conduit to the Muse that exists. Some come up with Get Back. Some come up with…not Get Back. But it's common.
The restoration, the edit - genius. Blessings on you, Peter Jackson. (I want to see the remaining 50 hours!)
Stephen is so naked with his emotions when discussing "Get Back", his enthusiasm for it just pours from every pore. He summarizes it as "So SO beautiful", and he's right. If you love the Beatles (and is there a more sacred partnership in popular culture over the past 100 years than the Beatles, Lennon and McCartney especially? I do not think there is.). You combine that massive love and respect for the Beatles, with all the process stuff about how they did it, with a compelling story with an emotional arc culminating in that iconic rooftop concert and...you get Stephen so happy. Beautiful to see!

I understand the cinéma vérité of letting the footage speak for itself, but if there's ever a Blu-ray version, I wouldn't mind an audio commentary track from the surviving Beatles.
I don’t know about adding commentary… I think the occasional use of subtitles to explain what was going on, as Peter Jackson dead, is sufficient. What I really want to see is complete performances of all the songs they did - not just the ones on the roof, but down in the studio as well. You know - two of us, the long and winding road, dig it etc.

When I saw the flowerpot scene my jaw absolutely dropped. I felt like I shouldn’t have been listening in to that conversation.
All 3 sections of the movie was like being there. When they talk about its being interactive, it really was. Another great job by Peter Jackson!
What a gift to receive from this revolutionary cultural phenomenon known as the Beatles all these years later!
Hats off to Lindsay-Hogg for the subterfuge in taping intimate conversations and Jackson's tech to uncover the rest. What seemed intrusive by the Beatles at the time is now available as a notable record. Jackson created a twice told tale for future fans and ourselves.
I can say, I got emotional at the end... it was the best!!!! My dad, my kids and I are all fans, so many different generations from so many ppl around the world, Noone will ever compare to THE BEATLES!!!
I honestly don't think any other director would have made this documentary as good.
Peter Jackson presented it exactly the way it should've... NO COMMENTARY, only a few brief texts of what the moment entailed for the viewer to know what the song would become or the events involved in the moment.
He and this documentary deserve an academy award.
Stephen Colbert brought out things that I personally noted too, P. Jackson confirmed, so it shows we all got the same impressions of what was going on.
After so many years of misconception about the Beatles relationship[s] and of what caused their breakup has been shattered and replaced by the truth.
So happy and truly glad to have come full circle over the facts of my favorite and most inspiring rock group.
Very grateful to Peter Jackson's work, and to Paul, Ringo, Yoko, and Olivia's approval to allow his 3 part method to be shown.
Watching the documentary really makes you feel like this just happened due to the incredible visual fidelity and humanity portrayed in each of the beatles. After and during watching I would have to catch myself thinking about when their next album would be coming out. Such a surreal experience.

It was so surreal seeing them in such a raw, candid way that I almost found myself believing I was watching incredible actors in a biopic...to the point that when still shots from the sessions were on screen, I found myself thinking "Oh, cool, that's a pic of the REAL session"...but it was literally the very same footage lol.
When I watched Paul McCartney created Get Back out of thin air, I was in awe! Crazy! Amazing!

Loved seeing Peter Sellers again and Billy Preston really helped defuse the group's toxic dynamic at that time. George was obviously over it all, Ringo was stoned, John and Yoko in their heroin phase, Paul climbing walls to check out the rooftop, all against a tight timeline. Exhausting for them all. Sad to see the cracks appearing but they were obviously living in a powder keg.
Sellers seemed to be there to hit them up for some hash. I've seen the bootleg of that scene, and he's talking about how good the hash was that they turned him onto. Hint, hint, lol. Sellers was apparently doing a lot of drugs around that time.
@@PreacherAtArrakeen It is quite an awkward scene in the Jackson doc, it seems like a non sequitur in that Sellers says barely a word, and after sitting briefly, leaves. It makes so much sense that there was something else going on of that nature--Sellers seems anxious in the scene, acutely aware of the camera. If he's paranoid and anxious because he is visiting to score or finagle hash from the Beatles, it would explain why he's so weird in the scene. The bootleg must be audio only footage. Also, it is of COURSE the sort of thing that Disney (and others) would just as soon stay on the cutting room floor.

Have seen the recent Beatles Doc Get Back three times now. Ringo is the best kept secret. Never realized how much went into drumming and he was a drumming god. The beat channeled through him. He was (is) so intelligent, responsive, hilarious, loving. The scene with him playing with Linda McCartney's 5 year old daughter while recording is priceless. Too sweet. He is the starr of that documentary.

Video Editors are the Unsung Heroes of the documentary world!
Heartbreaking to see John in the throes of his heroin addiction throughout the film. Probably not high, but he lets everyone know when he's crashing and can't play anymore that day.
When he first said he went back and got high, I assumed he was talking about weed. Some time later it donned on me he was talking about heroin. I'm not sure I see that as heartbreaking, because that was part of his journey, and it's not as though that's what ruined his life. The part that got me was just knowing what would happen to John.

when I was a kid (pre teen) I thought the Beatles looked like old adults, now that I'm older than they were in that documentary, they look freaking young. It's crazy.
PJ, thank you. You did a fantastic job. I think Lindsey-Hogg was a bit of a knob, trying to push the Beatles to Tripoli or some other grandiose locale because they're the Beatles. I think his dreary movie was revenge for being balked by the Beatles. I will not be surprised if this gets an Oscar nomination for best documentary. Just like it did in 1970. With this, and the WWI restoration, you, PJ, have made your mark on history. What a wonderful Christmas present, thank you!!!!!

There is obviously much more unseen moments on film that leads me to believe that there is a sequel in the future....at least I can dream of that future. I have read several books about the early Beatles, when they spent a lot of time in Germany in the very active club scene, but also includes a lot of drugs and girls and rock and roll. I doubt there is any footage of THAT part of their lives but wow...to be a fly on the wall for that documentary. Apparently the boys had to be "cleaned up and cleaned out" when they came back from the Continent so they could grow their fledgling start of their early careers. Oh, one of their biggest rivals when they went to Germany were another band starting out and learning their craft.....4 guys we all know as The Rolling Stones!!! I just wonder what would have happened if the Beatles had hung together and continued to work towards staying ahead of the competition....for 40 or 50 more years. One last comment....I still love the Beatles movies....so amateur and just crazy funny. Not sure if they can be found online or not. The way all the fan girls were almost dying against the wire fences or chasing the boys around the block...it is another look at the popularity of the Beatles. The line "Get back Jo Jo" emphasizes the Get. I don't think it really matters, and is more dependent on context. For Stephen, the Get made more sense in that context.
